I play on the Aulos. They can get very bright. I played in an early music ensemble in college. They would let non majors join to learn the recorder, so we had times I would play a duet with them and they would only play soprano recorder, so if I had to play the top line above them I would use Sopranino or this. My favorite memory with the garklin recorder is during one of our ensemble class that lets students preform a song or two we were doing two songs and one was a garklin solo, so I kept it in my shirt pocket while I played my alto recorder. During my solo I went up to the front and moved my stand then pulled it out of my pocket and played. After the class let out people kept asking about the recorder and saying they thought I was going to sing before I pull the recorder out. The thing I do not like about it is I am to big to play it comfortably. I am 6 ft 7 in, so my hands can barely squeeze together to play the instrument my recommendation is trim you fingernails or get scratched while playing:

1. Kobliczek has gar klein (which I have in the older Hopf variant) 2. Thanks for mentioning me. I also have an arranged piece for 4 different C recorders :-) 3. A while back I was in a theatre production and I played the gar klein against a loud mass of instruments. One of my follow musicians remarked that "Whatever that instrument cost, it's worth it just for that high G" which was the final note of the piece.

I just got a Garklein (the Aulos one)! I have to admit it's mostly for two not actually musical reasons: For the satisfaction of completing my collection (or, having everything from basset upwards - the super low ones are just too expensive for me to afford) and for the absolute hilarity of whipping a recorder out of a random pocket in my clothes at any point 😂 It's such a tiny instrument, it's mere existence is so funny, and just holding it immediately improves my mood :D

The highest note on the garklein (A) is just a second higher than the highest note on the sopranino (G). If you wish to play the garklein because its sound, go for it, but in most cases you can just use the sopranino that plays up to the high G.

I own an Aulos Symphony 501S garklein and an inexpensive no-brand wooden garklein. The Aulos 501S "speaks" easily and plays in tune but is brighter/harsher/louder than my wooden garklen. Most of my recorder playing is at church where a flutist and I play along with hymns. When I want to play an octave above the soprano line, I usually play a sopranino rather than a garklein. If you own a sopranino, soprano, and alto and want to expand your collection, you could certainly get an Aulos 501S garklein, but you would get more use and value out of a Yamaha YRT-304B tenor. See Sarah's tenor video.

Lately I have been playing with my church choir, both together with the choir, but also at mass playing with the psalms with organ and congregation. Wonderful! Our church is a very old stone church with an incredible sound. I normally play the sopranino (and of course also the soprano and alto some times), it sounds amazing with the organ. Now I think I have to try to get me a garklein recorder as well. Can't wait to try it! My flutes are all Moeck Rottenburg btw. I love your channel!

In general, I find the garklein and the sopranino are great for outdoor performances. The reduced echo takes some of the shrillness away, and they can be heard, even over "loud" instruments or a bit of ambient noise.

Thanks for this amazing vid again; I fell in love with the garklein 10 ys ago. I have an Aulos model that gave special colour to the Orfeo beginning (Toccata - the funny thing in fingering of the Garklein that if you open the holes starting from the lowest D it gives quite a perfect D major scale - unlike in the case of a soprano recorder where you have to use fork fingerin for Fsharp) and I used it for some folk dances too. But I had some terrible experiences too with it, e.g. we started a song in our church as a little instrumental foreplay (prelude) in combination with a violoncello. We wanted to perform a duet but it was hilarious a real catastropy. Violoncello and garklein are just simply too "far" from each other the whole church was rofl...

I bought an Aulos just to carry around in my pocket. The big flange at the bottom does nothing for the sound, and it dug into my leg when the instrument was in my pants pocket, so I cut the flange off. It is much easier to carry now. It is a hard instrument to get your fingers on properly. I wish Aulos had rotated the left hand holes a bit further left, and the right hand holes a bit further right.

I occasionally use the Garklein how you mentioned - to strengthen the melody at a crescendo. It has such a piercing tone that you can back way off on the volume and still get the effect. Here's an example where I did that for a Christmas tune (Oh, and I'm using the Aulos model): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbmZo8mFz8nXcaM.html

Hi Sarah, sorry it took so long to reply back. On one of your videos there was an add promoting conceal carry permit’s (to carry a gun legally) This is something we have here in the US, I assumed it was something that you and or yours either believe in or support.

A lot of the Garklein music is transcribed music. Do you have a C# recorder? The F#, C#, F#, C# (Half step Up) ensemble plays everything up a half step.

Can't you play the B7 and C8 as harmonics (3rd harmonic on E6 or F6)? Or is that too high?

I like to score for the garklein in ensemble arrangements because I generally consider chords to balance the best when each instrument is playing in approximately the same part of its range, and being able to write the same notes low or medium on a garklein on the one hand or medium or high on a sopranino on the other offers more flexibility. Do you find that it's necessary to play your Kung garklein loudly in order for it to not be flat?

Hi, Sarah. I wish you had labeled this video “for experts only”. My first recorder was a sopranino, and my friends begged me to take up a different hobby. I bought it because I could carry it around in my pocket. That was about 50 years ago. Now I cringe at beginners who only play soprano. With recorders, the higher the instrument, the more difficult to play in tune. So, fellow Team Recorder fans, if you’re contemplating a garklein (or sopranino or soprano) because it’s so conveniently small, please don’t. Start bigger!

jl5555ls >> My bass, with keys, has about the same finger reach as my alto - less in some places. My tenor, with keys, is as comfortable as a soprano, except that it’s heavier, so I use a neck strap. In Japan children learn all sizes. But as for the recorder as a “first instrument” in American elementary schools, I would advise instead the penny whistle. It’s less expensive, has simpler fingering, and does not require as subtle of breath control. It’s not fully chromatic, but in the one or two years those kids are exposed to the recorder (before going on to “real instruments”) they don’t play in more than two or three keys. If a kid want to move up to the recorder rather than flute or clarinet, it would be great if that were an option!

The one big advantage of the garklein is that the sound carries well outdoors. Maybe fife music would be good for it?

Hey Sarah, I'm a recorder player on the side and I've been playing casually for a few years. I have a few pieces totally memorized, but I find that I pretty much just play the same songs nowadays and it's been a crutch for a long time. Where do you get new, fresh music to play? I've gone on websites like 8notes but most recorder music out there is made for 3rd graders.

Hi, Sarah, have you ever seen, or even better, played the Piccolino recorder formerly made by Frans von Twaalfhoven and pitched an octave higher than the sopranino (in f).

I had to play an old kung garklein in our early music ensemble (joys of having tiny hands). There is nothing worse than trying to match intonation with a garklein that has been lying around in questionable humidity control for god knows how long.

Hi. I’ve heard that there were a job in Europe which one grew birds from chicks and told them to sing tunes using a very small recorder. I guess that had to be birds like canaries which can learn to sing. Birds who sang beautiful tunes were traded with high price. I wonder if that recorder was used for that.
