In our first installment, we discuss why this council is so important to the life of the Church, and why it is crucial that we understand how interpretive questions really influence everything in the life of the Church. For Q&A at the end of the talks please visit www.ccwatershed.org/blog/2017/...

The Vatican and the Curia must shoulder the blame for not reining in the ridiculous notions and actions of the Bishops. I know Bishops have great independent power but NOT to change dogma/doctrine. The Popes and the Curia really failed. "Ye shall know him by his fruits."

Lark Bird. I understand it that once dogma is established (ex cathedra - "from the chair of Peter") it can never be changed in any manner. From a personal standpoint, I think Vatican II should be reviewed and studied in the light of the Council of Trent. Also - it is of interest to me, at least, what aspects of this council are affected by the Freemasonic agenda as enumerated in the Alta Vendita: the Permanent Instruction for the Subversion of the Catholic Church. For example, the Novus Order Missae was developed by six Protestant ministers and a freemason Bishop, Aniballe Bugnini. It's almost 4:00am and all of the preceeding is off the top of my head, so to speak. I'm certain I may have erred in some respects, so I hope you will be kind enough to forgive me. Best regards.

Linda Lamuth - I absolutely agree with you on the Novus Ordo Missae. Just the mere fact they and other non-Catholic leaders attended Vat 2 tells me Vat 2 was not of the Holy Mother Church. I think it is significant that the Pope who called Vat 2 died before it was ended. However, God permits. I think we must stay glued to Christ's side and pray that God's Will may be done.

I am not sure where he is going with this. I am willing to listen, because I want every insight on V2 I can get. How did we get from there to here. It is like doors were opened and there was no thought to what doors would be opened from that first one,on and on,down to today. The same kind of thing goes on today.

Fr. Christopher Smith's lectures on the Second Vatican Council will become an invaluable resource for many people, because in many cases, there are various conflicting interpretations of the Second Vatican Council. Thanks-a-million for posting these lectures online, and especially thanks-a-million to Fr. Smith for giving his permission to have them posted on the Internet. Many of the complexities of the Council, as well as the events leading up the Council, are brought to light. I had listened to this lecture series from Corpus Christi Watershed, but somehow I am drawn to listening to these lectures again. There is just so much to learn.

What's with all the down votes and negativity? I liked the intro and eager to watch the entire series. I think everyone is missing the point here. The HS did lead the church. Now we have to question the interpretation of the council. From India I can attest that the interpretation was messed up a lot. But that doesn't we that everything is wrong about the council

Why is a priest referencing 50 Shades of Grey? Also saying "Oh My God" every other sentence? This video was edited too. 3 hours ago this video had a much more flippant intro. Now it starts with a holy st Michael the archangel prayer. Sensus Fidelium should take this video down. Good information but there are MUCH better messengers regarding this topic. Sensus Fidelium - let's get back on track.

This is great. thank you very much for obtaining this kind of doctoral level content for the channel. as a formally trained religious studies scholar with graduate degrees, this type of systemic approach to the council is just a goldmine. It's important for us traditionally minded Catholics to have a full grasp of what svc actually is.

Angel Falcon St. Bernadette, uneducated to the nth degree according to worldly standards, was asked by a panel of clerics....."What do you fear most......" Her answer....."bad Catholics". Using phrases like "50 shades of gray" in light of the recent movie and in a humorous tone is quite problematic!

However what the speaker said is " a lot of cool stuff happening in Theology" were happening..." and that contributed to VII etc. That is when the problem began when they are talking of Critical Historical Analysis and apply it to Biblical Studies, Theology, etc. It shift from the Theology of the Saints, to this critical analysis which has its foundation in Protestantism.

I'm only 31 minutes in and wondering does this get better!!! This lecture feels completely out of step with the stalwart and rock solid sermons I've heard before. Those were from other priests. Maybe it's the effusive praise of Benedict XV that's throwing me off or the colloquialisms. Either way we expect a more reverent exposition of thoughts. This is like a discordant note you hear that makes you want to stop the song. What I've heard so far is missing the point with Vatican II. It appears from my study of things that John the 23rd called the council because he wanted to. There's our first issue. The Pope is the chief steward not the master. He should have asked God to make it clear a council was needed. His next mistake was a failure to clearly define truths that were increasing coming under attack in the form of new "understandings" and "research". We live the fruit of his imprudent decision. God help us.

Father I enjoyed the lesson but you seriously need to slow down.Plus you kept moving on from a subject saying we will come back to that later but never did. ie you never got back to explaining why Pope John didn't like people lighting candles in church but only a priest. I have noticed that some priests ( I'm not saying you ) say the mass much too fast. For example,I care for my 85 year old mother at home with dementia 24/7 so I watch many masses per day.In one chapel after listening to a certain mass a few times by the same priest I thought that went very quick. So one day I decided to time him from the minute he walked out to the alter and left. I was amazed and shocked not to say saddened that the time he took was exactly 13 minutes and 20 seconds and the full mass was over. I consider that an insult to God not to mention the congregation who came to mass. But I digress. Can I please have the answer about Pope John and the candle story? Thank you.

Modernists give themselves away when they speak of a "pre-VII" Church. They do mean and do want, revolution. They reject almost entirely the Church founded by Christ and intend a "spirit of VII" church consisting entirely of what their heretic of the month enjoys at the moment.

Dear Friends in Sensus Fidelium, GODSPEED! I'm sharing this with an acquaintance who's a practically rabid traditionalist but in view of your work might begin to comprehend the magnitude of his error. Pray for him as you do for all the folks of his spirit. I think I get the whole point of the council convened by Saint John XXIII, that point being the very prayer Christ prayed (recorded in John 17), "that they might be one". Reunion with our separated brothers and sisters demands we take holy initiative, which he obviously did. Again Godspeed.!!!

It seems the Vatican wants a Mass 2.0 only. Why does it have to be at the expense of our Traditional Mass. Why can’t we have God’s 1.a. Mass and God’s 1.b. Mass? Does everything have to be so non-inclusive or black and white or only one or the other. But, if you ask my personal opinion I’d have to say … the Traditional Extraordinary Mass. Because it’s not caring of how long it takes to worship God in the holiest of ways, it does not rush through genuflections, kisses, or the sign of the cross, etc. The words are just slow enough and enunciated well enough to be heard and understood by all. I can certainly read along in a missile to read the Latin and the English to know why and what is going on and what is next. When I travelled in the 70’s and 80’ to Europe, I had to read a translated missile from a language of the country I was visiting to respond in whatever broken pronunciation I might have incoherently been able to say. It would have been much more appropriate to have been in a Latin Mass and everyone responding thusly. But I would have followed a translation. What is it too conspicuous to carry a Missile and or a Bible and a Catholic prayer book around with you suddenly in the last 50 years? Really? It’s not “our church”for elevating humanity or saying, dancing or singing what ever we like. It’s GOD’S Church so that we can honor, worship and elevate the Trinity. Our time to be thankful, grateful, and reverent towards Him. In my opinion the shorthand version in every language known is not holy enough for my God.

The problems of Modernism in the Roman Catholic Church began one many years before Vatican II and the NEW Mass. Think about Our Lady of Lasallette. The problem of declining attendance to Mass I think began in 1940 and accelerated afterwards. I do not know maybe Blessed Popes John xxiii and Paul VI were looking to the future were worried, trying to put a bread to the exodus of the laity from the Church. If you want to know who really were these two POPES, read their writings. They were Traditionalist and denouncing the evil of their time.

There were not two forms of mass before Vatican II. Even today the Latin Tridentine Mass is still the Roman Rite. The Novus Ordo is illicit. We were deceived into thinking the NO replaced the LTM after VII. Deo gratias for the late Archbishop Lefebvre.

Lou D - Yes and you'd think that he being a Priest and all would know better, but thus is the way of the Church today, they don't care about the thing's of which we have cared about for over two thousand years of the Church. Everything of Religious Morals and Values has gone out the window and is no longer considered to be important. Yet those thin'g were always extremely important to Catholic faith. God Bless.
