Intro to Water Chemistry for Concrete

Most reactions in the world and within concrete occur because of water. Because of this, it is helpful to understand how the chemistry works within water. This video covers basic chemistry concepts but explains them in a way that people that don’t love chemistry can understand. Examples are given of why water is able to break up or dissolve certain molecules and not others. Discussion over what happens, where the molecules go, and how we know that they are still present.

Good start. Engaging. Was hoping though, to see these reactions: Ca3SiO5 + H2O → (CaO)·(SiO2)·(H2O)(gel) + Ca(OH)2, as well as the resulting structure.

Thanks for the gibbs free energy chat - I never thought of applying it to concrete or even solubility laws. I assume that when you increase the salt concentration near the solubility point, the deltaH stays so the deltaS woudl likely decrease? BTW I like your cookie monster impression.

Thanks for the comment! You are right that water is a crazy molecule and H2O is not always the best way to explain this. However, I think it works out well for an introduction. My favorite water chemistry book is from Benjamin.
