Thanks so much for your informative video. Why do you not use feeders? I am a beginner, and receiving my first nucs this week. We were told we needed to provide 1:1 syrup until June when the bees have enough honey in the hive to support themselves.

Another great video. I took his course and Paul is a great teacher all around. A question: if Im installing a four frame nuc in mid June and there is plenty of clover, etc, around my yard, will feeding be as necessary or will the bees be able to produce food on their own from the start? Thank you!

@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the nice thoughts. If you are installing the nuc in a hive with drawn comb feeding wont be necessary in mid June. Our video 'Comb Building" shows installing a nuc in a new hive with no comb and deomonstrates ways to get comb built. .

Hello Paul. Wonderful video series, and extremely informative. If I may suggest, at some point, please do a video on how all of you work with bees half-naked! One sting in the bearding video? I don't get it! I'm calm, I don't mind getting stung anymore or less than you do, so what gives?! After about 15 minutes of working with my bees, as if someone hit a light switch, I'm attacked! Thanks so much, and keep up the great work. Best, Yann

Hi Yann We are able to work in comfortable clothes as we breed bees for gentle behaviour. Wear what you need with your bees for now and look for a breeder that selects for gentle behaviour. You could see our video Buckfast Queen Mating Station on Thorah Island. Glad you find the videos helpful.

Now that the season is coming to an end I hope you're answering questions again...for a new beekeeper, without the benefit of another hive to grab a honey frames from, is it worth feeding with syrup after installing a nuc in the spring? I'm just an hour or so west of you (Grand Bend area) and will be getting my first hives in the spring of 2018 and are wondering if feeding it for the first few days will help establish the hives.
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre 6 жыл бұрын
Hey SGB Yes it is definitely beneficial to feed sugar syrup when you inststall a nuc in a new hive. Feed them until they draw out comb on all the new frames. Good luck next spring!

I will be receiving 2 nucs. I do not believe the queen will be marked. When should I capture and mark her? When I install the nuc or wait a week or two?
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre 7 жыл бұрын
HI Pete You don't have to mark her. If you haven't marked a queen before practise on some drones first. If you are confident about marking her you may as well do it when you install the nuc as you should be looking for her then. This advice applies for a free running queen not a caged queen.

Hi Josip Thanks for letting us know you have found the videos helpful. We get this question a lot so will do a video on the topic this summer. Why do we use canvas for the hive inner cover? A: We use canvas inner covers for a few reasons. They make it easy to take a quick peek in the hive, and are cheap and easy to make. They are light, the lids sit down well, less excess wax on the frame top bars, and we rarely need to scrape the inner cover. We use 18 oz (#8) canvas -otherwise known as duck. It's a bit hard to come by in Ontario, but it is available from online distributors (US: www.bigduckcanvas.com/number-8-18oz-cotton-duck-canvas.html, Canada www.jtsoutdoorfabrics.com/18oz-Cotton-Duck-Canvas-Untreated--Natural-60_p_15038.html). Bees chew through thin canvas so a heavy weight is better. We flip it over periodically when new so the bees thoroughly coat it with propolis. An alternative is a feedbag folded in half. Show less

Hello, I'm in eastern ontario new bee keeper, Have a question on feeding 4 frame nucs that only have foundation frames. How much is too much and how long should they be fed . Experiencing a dry spell july 2018 . Been 2 weeks at first fed 500 ml over 3 days , gradually started consuming more , now are up to 1000ml in 24 hrs. But comb still not built up on all foundation frames, there are so many school of thought that i have seen doing my research . What would you suggest. Daniel

Hello, Just wondering if you could clear something up for me. Looking at the O.B.A (freq questions). and OMAFRA ( annual honey yield per colony 19 kg). and other web sites . All saying that the annual honey harvest per year is 70 to 90 lbs. per colony. This is confusing me because is see single or double brood chambers with 3 and 4 deep honey supers on top, and i thought that each deep super would yield 70 to 90 lbs . Are they basing on worst case . I realize there are many factor that come into play ( area, temp , rain fall, age of colony , etc etc). All this to say on an average year what would you yield from one colony. Thanks Daniel
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel You can extract about 38 lbs from a full medium depth super. I'm not too sure about deeps. You have to count in the hives that perform less well. We figure on about 100 lbs per colony average in our hives but last year and probably this year are lower.

are all queens marked in nucs as this one was and if not how would you tell the difference between the other bees and the queen?
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith Not all beekeepers mark their queens so ask if they have when you buy a nuc. If the queen isn't marked you look for her larger abdomen. Please see our video on 'Finding Queens' for more tips.

What is the purpose of laying the tarp in between the brood box and lid?
@raterus
@raterus 3 ай бұрын
It's just an easier to remove barrier so the bees don't propolize (glue) the lid to the hive. You use some form of this on telescoping lids.

Your inner cover is canvas?
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob Yes.It's 18 oz or #8 Canvas (Duck) It's hard for us to source locally but I see it's available online here www.bigduckcanvas.com/number-8-18oz-cotton-duck-canvas.html We flip the inner cover over periodically when it's new so the bees thoroughly coat it with propolis. Bees chew through thinner canvas. Another option is a feed bag folded in half. This is the #1 question from our video series so I'll do a video about it next year.
