BitSetter brings one of the most convenient features from the Nomad, tool length probing, to the Shapeoko. Set your zero height once, and never worry about it again. If you have gcode programs that require multiple endmills to complete, BitSetter will guide you through tool changes and get you back to machining quickly and precisely.

@carbide3d

It does not detect missed steps like that. If you suspect you did affect the positional accuracy of the machine you'd have to re-home. But if you do tool changes with a pair of wrenches on the spindle/collet nut, you should be able to apply a high degree of torque without lateral forces that would cause those missed steps.

I got a Bitsetter with my kit when I bought it and installed it, no problem. Issue I am having is that everytime the bit touches the magnetic disc, the magnet attaches to the bit and gets carried off. the bigger issue is when it takes the disc off, it is always slightly off center and when it goes back down, the disc cants on the edge of the socket and the reading is off. Should I glue the magnetic disk to the Bitsetter? Right now, this issue makes the tool effectively useless.

In the Video, the Connector to which the end of the TLP was attached to had 3 Pins - If all of them ( V+/V-/Signal ) are required then we'll be out of luck as the X-Carve only uses a 2-Pin ( V+/V- ) for its Probe Connection.

BitSetter doesn't change how you use the touch probe or set your zero, you should continue using whatever method you're comfortable with. It just means that after you change a tool the machine will be able to bring the tip of the endmill to the same position, regardless of length.

We've engineered it to work with Carbide Motion. Technically there's no reason another Gcode sender couldn't do it, but you'd be in your own. The hardware will trigger just like any other probe, but it's up to the software to know what to do with the signals.

Has anyone run into a problem where the bit setter is measuring too low? For example, I used the touch probe to set the z height which comes out at 31mm, then I started my program, installed the correct tool, it measures the tool length but when I went to verify the height of the tool it is 5mm lower than what Carbide Motion is showing me. @@carbide3d Is there a way to tell the SO3 to NOT use the bit setter, for when we're using a bit that won't hit it properly (spoil board surfacing bit comes to mind)? @@SysadminsWithGuns You can go into the settings tab in CM and uncheck use of the bitsetter. Make sure you manually set your zero height after doing that though, because the Z-offset CM stores may be deleted and throw off your heights. Also, write down your coordinates for the bit setter to make it easier when you turn it back on. (I keep them on a piece of masking tape I stuck to the back of the bit setter.)

They do very different things. Touch probe helps you find a zero point. BitSetter compensates for different tool lengths so you don’t have to find the zero height every time you load a new tool. Technically, you could just manually use the touch probe after every single tool change, but that doesn’t work if your reference surface has been machined away or something.

Hey Winston, thanks for the video on this and in using the bitsetter and the probe, where is one to place the coupling board that comes with it? There does not seem to be enough room in the control box without having it touching something else, perhaps causing a short in the circuitry. That would be a bad thing so is this small circut board to be affixed to the outside of the control box somewhere? Perhaps drill a couple of holes in the Y1 rail and screw it to the rail? Thanks again, David J.
