Introducing my solo road trip around Malta & the first in a series of vlogs exploring the best places to visit on the island, starting with St Peter’s Pool, Marsaxlokk & Pretty Bay!

After a few months of planning how best to spend 1 week in Malta I decided that a self guided island tour and solo road trip would be my best bet. It would leave me free to travel and explore as I pleased, provide enough flexibility for me to change things around if required, and permit me to visit more places than the much slower public transport system would - including some destinations that are only accessible by car. With that, my Maltese road trip was on! Not my first solo road in Europe and definitely not my last.
I started my day at a unique diving and swimming area called St Peter’s Pool which was close to Marsaxlokk. It’s a remarkable place with bright limestone rocks naturally formed into a horseshoe shape about 5 metres above the beautiful clear water. Tourists and I suspect a few locals line the rock’s edge to catch the sun but most are there for swimming and diving - it seems to be the perfect place for that.
My next stop was Malta’s most popular fishing village Marsaxlokk where fishing boats bobble in the picturesque bay and restaurants and bars serve fish usually from that morning’s catch. There are street markets and imposing churches overlooking it all. I enjoyed a walk along Marsaxlokk waterfront admiring the traditional Luzzu boats painted in bright colours and stopping off to see some cute well-decorated Maltese houses on my way. Even on my first day I knew having the car was a great decision as it was easy to extend my stay by an hour or two when perhaps I hadn't scheduled quite enough time to see everything on my list.
I continued my drive past St George’s Bay towards my final destination Pretty Bay - a lovely artificially produced sandy beach and a place that felt a little like a resort town. Pretty Bay is favoured by tourists and locals alike and it’s a popular place to own a summer house or holiday home. It was relaxing to take a walk along the beach and enjoy a little bit of sunshine before sunset.
After just 1 day of my 1 week stay in Malta I just knew it was going to be a fantastic trip. I’m really pleased I included St Peter’s Pool, Marsaxlokk & Pretty Bay into my road trip around Malta, especially whilst I was in the area. I think I would have regretted not seeing them.

Love you having book icons for your chapters in the description - just noticed this. Malta looks gorgeous. Love the limestone and the stunning water. Still waiting for videos of you cliff diving! Love those colorful boats. Didn't know they had such old caves there. The bench transitions were fantastic!

Thank you! I started adding chapters during my Scotland trip as there were often lots of different parts to the video. Thought the little icons would be something different. It's a beautiful island that's for sure - so much to do for such a small place. Funny you should mention the cliff diving... got changed into my swimming costume, did a couple of practice somersaults, set the camera up and as I stretched over to press record I felt a slight twinge in my lower back. As much as I wanted to carry on I knew deep down that I had to rest it. Next time for sure.... 😬

Loved the opening to this video! I visited Malta many years ago as a teen and I remember the Popeye village very well! The editing of the jumping was amazing! I think the Malta video is very well timed - I have some child free teacher friends who are considering Malta in the hope that they can't demand the premium costs given that families with kids can't go. Am I right to assume you went pre-2020?

Thanks for watching Caroline! And thanks for noticing the opener - quite a bit of time went into making it but I'm planning to use it for all of the videos in this series so hopefully I'll get some use out of it. Ah the Popeye Village, got a video on that coming up - I loved it! It's a wonderful little island, perfect for exploring with much more to see and do than I expected. And yes you are right about the timing, I filmed it waaaaay back in October 2019, which feels like a lifetime ago!! I didn't even know what a coronavirus was back then - good times! Yes now sounds like a great time to go, lots of competition for your custom, super hot summer's and it's on the green list - can't ask for more than that these days haha!
