I swear, part of the 'Korean Beauty Standard' is based on the 'Chinese Thinspo' model. Koreans want their Female Idols to be paper-thin but then those same fans get mad when their Idols can't perform because they are STARVING THEMSELVES TO DEATH (in order to stay within the impossible confines of that bullshit 'standard'), get sick easily or pass out on stage from being over-worked and under-fed. That 'standard' in the Entertainment Industry is ANYTHING BUT 'standard', since it clearly leaves out 90% of Koreans. People have literally K***ED themselves because they can't fit into that impossible box forever. Age is also part of that stupid impossible 'standard'; the Industry tries to throw people away once they get near 30 years old, as if that is OLD. Just imagine that for a minute; these Idols don't get to have real childhoods, they spend their ENTIRE youth training to do this job so they will be able to at least live 'comfortably' for the rest of their lives (if not actually being truly wealthy like an incredibly lucky few of them, then at least comfortable) but guess what? 30 years is seen as OLD! WHAT!? In Hwasa's case specifically, she is what we in the U.S. would call 'an Exotic Beauty'. If she ever had to leave Korea because of all that hatred, GUARANTEED the U.S. Entertainment Industry would take her in a heartbeat! Even if her English has not improved, that would not matter; somebody would go out-of-their-way to find and provide a good translator for as long as Hwasa needed or wanted one. She's already Royalty over here, she just doesn't know it yet. I am fairly sure that if it really got THAT BAD over there, at least one of the other members of Mamamoo would come over here with her if she was to move.

See this is the problem - there's nothing wrong with Korean beauty standards, just as there is nothing wrong with western beauty standards, or African, or Arabic. They are what they are. For a reason. They don't have anymore strict beauty standards than the west. The west is obsessed with African-American culture - dark tones and big butts. Big butts have never been a thing outside of AA culture until now. You're just viewing it from a westernized perspective.

@@jamescurfman3284 No, it's really not. It's based on socio-historical class culture. For example - a woman is supposed to look delicate. Not sexual, because they're not of the courtesan class, not dark skinned, because they don't work in the fields and not fat, because they put their family first when it comes to eating. Very much rooted in old society and pre-80's was the norm everywhere else. Hwasa is very Americanized in her look. She idolizes Rhianna. She makes her skin dark, does her make up very Latina/AA, focuses on her shape. Ergo, Westerners or people attracted to that look are over the top attracted to her. So much so that they completely overlook say, Wheein, who has a very asian look. It's not Korea who is wrong (though they shouldn't attack Hwasa), but Westerners are full out obsessed with anyone who looks AA/Latina esque and therefore gloam to Hwasa over others. She's not overly beautiful, she's just to your westernized tastes.

The Entertainment Industry (all over the world, not just Korea) is not looking for 'standard', they are looking for 'exceptional'. 'Standard' would imply that HALF of the population would fit in that box. Guess what? WRONG! 'They are what they are' because there are some happy fat OLD WEALTHY guys sitting around and this is what they like to see. It's a FETISH by those wrinkly old farts and has very little to do with real life of any average people of any population. The Korean version is FAR more strict than what we have going on over here. Ask all of the members of Twice which member they envy as far as looks go; most of them will say Dahyun, and their reasoning is that she has THE MOST PALE complexion of all of them. Where did they get the notion that pale skin is somehow 'better' than what the rest of them have? It's CONDITIONING, just like everybody else. It has been going on for DECADES. Too bad MONEY TALKS. That's 'the reason' that 'they are what they are'. Wealthy people control the media. Those few people at the top of the money heap TELL the camera crews and directors what commercials to make and they TELL the television stations what commercials to air. In this way, they TELL the population what is 'acceptable' and what is 'ugly' or what is 'beautiful'. Over many years time, the entire long-sighted campaign brain-washes people to see what those old asses want them to see. That's ALSO how it works over here. It's just that our beauty 'standard' is far more lenient, open and relaxed because the U.S. is indeed 'the Melding Pot of the World'. Our average bloodlines are literally from everywhere at once. We don't have just a single template to judge beauty by, we have ALL of the different templates from all over the world and new ones have to be made when people of mixed heritage come along. I personally have NEVER liked the Big Butt look (or big breasts, for that matter). Darker skin tone than mine, sure, but that is because I am so Sickly-Pasty-White that I nearly glow-in-the-dark if I don't get enough sunlight. It's not even ALL Americans who like what you think we all like. But it's REALLY EASY to see EXACTLY what Koreans like. There are a few videos about it and they get VERY SPECIFIC about what is acceptable as the 'KBS'. Look up videos about 'The Golden Ratio' in Korea.

Dark skin from working in the fields...RIIIGHT. Ask Hwasa if she has ever personally been a farmer. Ask her when the last member of her family was a farmer. She doesn't MAKE herself darker, she IS darker naturally and simply has not LIGHTENED her skin chemically like some other Idols have been known to do. Good god, have you lost touch with reality? Or have you simply swallowed the Blue Pill? Or are you just not paying any attention and are now just talking out your ass?
