City mpg can be improved dramatically by learning to start off in second gear. You hear most drivers revving the nuts off their car in first gear in traffic. Most bigger cars have more than enough torque to pull off in second with just the clutch and very little or even no gas at all.

Mine is auto, unless pulling away quickly or towing they often set off in second gear, so volvo agree!

I get 50 m.p.g from my Merc S class 3.2 litre diesel cdi easily, so these wee cars are not that economical are they .?

I find most diesels will manage close to 50 in ideal circumstances, the difference being bigger engines will drop off more when driven quicker, or loaded up more. The merc is an excellent engine, but if you were to subject the two cars to the same driving in the same route, the mercedes would be thirstier as it's heavier. There is actually very little difference brand to brand in terms of efficiency, and maintaining a constant speed doesn't actually take much energy.

2.0 litre diesel, they're going to charge you to take that into London. Also, is road tax and depreciation high on a diesel? Nice cars but the days of cheap running costs have gone. Small fuel efficient petrol engines are now more economical.

splodge 57 I park in Finchley and get on the tube so avoid charges, but yes, should I drive into central London the T charge is £25, but that's on expenses so I don't pay it personally. You are absolutely right, small petrol engines are the best economy now, but that first three year depreciation though! 😳 road tax is £190, which is still nearly £100 less than the Leon 1.8 auto.

MR G hi, thanks for the comment. Everyone will have their own experiences and preferences, but the Volvo has been great so far. Just completed a 1500 mile round trip to the French Alps and back with no issues. Great motorway cruiser.

I would add, as with all cars, only ever spend 2/3rds of your budget in the car, used cars can hide nasty surprises, no matter what make or model.

My Honda civic 2003 automatic drinks to much petrol. I put £50 a week in it. Should I get rid of the car?
@PhilOsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Fire Blade890 if it’s reliable then probably not, I guess you drive around town a lot, so even a newer more economical car will still use a lot, but what you save in fuel you will spend on depreciation. Driving style can make a big difference too, quick acceleration really chews through fuel

@@PhilOsGarage morning. Thank you for answering my question. It starts all the time. No problems with the engine. I was going to get a car on finance to replace it. Is the finance option a poor choice?
@PhilOsGarage5 жыл бұрын
Fire Blade890 no problem! Even if you halved your fuel use, depreciation on the newer car and interest on finance will easily make up the difference so you probably won’t be any better off. The only weak point in that era of civic was the clutch in the manual, which of course you don’t have, so you have a really good car there. I’d hang o. To what you have, personally
