I remember when the villainous Daleks first appeared back in the sixties, they were really scary back then, it was OK at night though cos our bedrooms were upstairs, and me and my brothers felt safe and out of their reach, not so for my friend, he lived in a bungalow, he was grey by the age of thirteen. Terry Nation has a lot to answer for.

That could be true. The first Doctor Who story (well, episodes 2-4 at least) was not very well received that much. The next story (which was The Daleks) was so good and the Daleks were so terrifying that it arguably made the show an instant success.

I hope they will never retire the Daleks because they are too iconic. They tried to finish off the Daleks at the end of the Patrick Troughton story "The Evil of the Daleks" where the Doctor actually says at the end "The FINAL end!". But then of course 5 years later they brought the Daleks back again in the Jon Pertwee story "Day of the Daleks".

What a great movie. The Daleks were what saved the show. I ws amazed by the Daleks when I was 5 years old. Genesis was the first Doctor Who story I ever saw. I was instantly hooked.

And it changed the show as well as saved it. Had the writers prepared anything else, the story would never have been made, as Sidney, the man who made the show (fun fact he's Canadian), hated bug eyed monsters or BEM's as he called them. This was originally supposed to be a educational show, but history had other plans. History and Terry Nation of course.

@@Gojiragon I think the strange mix of outlandish sci-fi ideas and mysterious historical tidbits is what keeps me hooked on Doctor Who, along with the general core of the Doctor's character with his general pacifism and need to help others. I love seeing how they reinterpret vague or unknown areas of history.

Watched this on its first broadcast. Just remember being blown away by the recreation of this scene, as well as the performances of everyone involved. You feel like you're there in 1963, watching it all happen over everyone's shoulders. Absolutely terrific drama

I've watched the film a dozen times and, for me, this is the epic moment. Followed by Verity being called into Sid's office for the 10 million viewers speech. 🤔 oh and Carol Anne Ford playing that mom. And... I could go on and on. What a wonderful film.

What a coincidence, I was watching An Adventure in Space and Time just the other day and I was watching "The Day of the Doctor" earlier from my 50th anniversary box set which my mum and dad got me for Christmas. I am really pleased with the box set by the way. I like seeing Nicholas Briggs playing Peter Hawkins, one of the original voices of the Daleks (and then later the Cybermen).

I noticed the similarities but I wonder if they made this set slightly smaller and had Ian run down the same direction as Susan and the Doctor for budget reasons? Ian ran to the left (his right) in the original clip I found and it seems strange here that the Daleks shoot him if he's running down the same way as the Doctor and Susan and not a different way but if it's because of money, I can understand. Do you think that's the reason Andrew?

Admit that I have just become a huge Doctor Who fan with Chris Eccleston and the other new ones...I have bought the entire series until the ninth series and currently watching the third. I am HOOKED! This is soooo much fun to watch and all episodes are so exciting!!! LOVE IT!! Was looking for something like this for a long time and I am eternally thankful to two of my mates who suggested I should try watching DW!! WHAT A RIDE.....so far!! :-)

Actually they're fairly weak representations of the original props. they have rubber fenders - a feature that wasn't introduced until the 70s - their plungers look weird, they have orange domelights - a feature that wasn't introduced until The Chase - and one of them has a silver eye - a mistake that wasn't made until The Dalek Invasion of Earth.

TheRecreator The voices are kind of really off too, intonation and such is totally wrong for the early 60's Daleks, there are fan made ones that come closer, though admittedly those particular voices are a LOT harder to accurately try to recreate. Definitely seems though to basically be just Nick Briggs attempting to emulate the original voices. I wonder, is that actually him in a costume and wig at the Mic? Ahah.

It’s honestly insane to me that they recreated the original props that look genuinely great with the slight modern embellishments and decided not to use them newer series, I think with a different colour scheme they would look great in the proper show

The 1st episode of Dr Who had about 2 million viewers but by episode 10 it was over 10 million (at the time about 20% of the population of the UK). Britain was in a state of Dalek mania by then and every kid had to have a toy Dalek.

Most people don't realize just how long Nick Briggs has been doing Dalek voices. He started well before the 2005 revival, even before The Genocide Machine, the first Big Finish Dalek story. Brigg's first performance as a Dalek was in the 1985 Audio Visuals audio story The Time Ravagers.

You know no one would have ever thought of creating a monster like the daleks would ever work with their very simple design yet somehow it's able to strike fear and even be creepy at the same time. The voice they put was the cherry on top the first daleks would for ever go down in history as the greatest threat the doctor has ever had to fight.

I think its the way they look on the black and white 60s TV sets and the way the camera angles film them as you can see at 1:52. Honestly i am 16 and i am more scared of these then the modern ones.

I do like Doctor Who, but I've grown to love the Behind the Scenes aspect of Classic and NuWho. Like the fact that they made only four daleks in their initial run, and would reuse and customise them over the decades... and that the BBC had a habit of donating them away only to ask to borrow them again!

For "The Chase" the BBC borrowed some of the Daleks made for the film version of Dr. Who and the Daleks to fill out their ranks. You can see them on the space ship and during the jungle scenes when they are on the Mechanoid planet. Later several of the Film Daleks became part of the BBC's stock of Dalek parts. The last time a Film Dalek appeared in Doctor Who was as the Dalek Supreme in Planet of the Daleks.

This shows that more classic era stories CAN be made, or at least using classic era Daleks in modern stories. And THESE Daleks are far, far more scary than what we've been getting the past 8 or 9 years.

+MoarCrossovers™ They're actually the same props. The man who designed reporting his construction of them on the Project Dalek website, they were made to be interchangeable with the Invasion Earth design. Saves money.

Yeah but they ruined them. I hate how today they show the original Daleks with the idiotic blue balls. They only ever used that because blue looked better on black and white tapes, the Daleks were never meant to look blue and silver. They always had this metallic, colorless feel to them. That's why when the show went to color they immediately changed it to a grey body with black balls, to maintain the colorless feel. Blue just looks stupid and makes the original Daleks look cringey.

I feel like the simplicity of the 60s Daleks makes them scarier. The new ones are a cool update to make them look militaristic but these ones are off putting and a tad creepy. Especially with the stark exterior and the angry screaming.

Okay the first line was pretty on point for the original 63 Daleks but the second line kinda slipped into the more later Nicholas Briggs Daleks, but still I feel that Briggs did a fantastic job as the voice of the originals

The build up to their reveal here is so bizarrely foreboding. It's like an actual episode of the show where the silly, ignorant humans make fun of the alien before it reveals how dangerous it is.

The inspiration from Designs for the Daleks came from the director he was out on a walk round a hospital building and a chimney design had a shape of a Dalek and basically the design came and the phrase Exterminate has been going round ever since

Jackie Lee Plus before they had forcefields they had to use biological weapons a lot of the time. Also the angels kill people for sustenance, the Daleks kill because of their hatred.

I think I read once that The Daleks have various levels of extermination: from paralysis, (as seen in that clip) to total obliteration. Apparently, they like to put it on a level which would give the victim the most possible amount of pain. The Seventh Doctor claimed that a Dalek gun caused "massive internal displacement". Causing your insides to be "scrambled". None of this is exactly what I would describe as "merciful". On the other hand, the 10th Doctor literally said "The only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely". *Nicely*.

It's sad to say, but one major screw-up was that as awesome as it was to have Nicholas Briggs himself playing Peter Hawkins, he would never have recorded the Daleks' lines in real time. In real life, he recorded it before and the operators inside the Daleks would've had to somehow operate the lights while blinking them in time. Even in 2018, real time voice recording is very difficult.

Are you SURE about this? Because I understood Peter Hawkins (and David Graham) _did_ do it in real time, and they continued to operate this way right up to 1989 - hence why the lights rarely synchronised properly. If you are right, I would really like you to share your evidence.

I love the Daleks to pieces, even though I shouldn't. It may just be years of adorable fanfics where they get shrunk and try to swarm the Doctor and their gunshots are tiny little pinpricks.
