SOUTH WEST COASTAL 300 E1: Introducing my road trip around the lowlands of Scotland with part 1 of my journey from Dumfries to Moffat. On route I explore Caerlaverock Castle, Lockerbie & Moffat Waterfall.

Welcome to my south west Scotland road trip around the magnificent South West Coastal 300 - inspired very much from my adventure on the North Coast 500 the previous year. The route begins and ends in Dumfries but this travel vlog covers the first part of that journey from Dumfries to the hills of Moffat. It’s another one of my solo self-drive adventures in Scotland.
Starting in Dumfries I’ll explain my plan as well as mention some of the challenges that I’m expecting to face. There’s no doubt that completing the road trip will hinge on the ongoing UK wide fuel crisis, the great British weather and my own planning & scheduling! I’ll show you a map of the route and tell you how I’m intending to cover it all.
Following a quick walk around Dumfries I jump in the car and hit the road - the first stop will be Caerlaverock Castle which turns out to be a 13th century moated triangular castle seven miles to the south. Having explored the area I moved on to my next destination of Lockerbie, infamous for the horrific Pan Am Flight 103 bombing that took place over the town in 1988. I visited the Garden Of Remembrance at Lockerbie Cemetery and then a memorial at Sherwood Crescent which is where a large part of the plane came down forever changing the landscape and the lives of countless people.
After taking a walk through Lockerbie town centre I drove to the Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall in the hills surrounding Moffat (a place often called Moffat waterfall). Turns out it’s one of the highest waterfalls in the UK and is situated in an area that’s very popular with walkers and hikers - mainly because of the numerous trails and stunning valley viewpoints. If you have a few hours then you can follow the trail past the waterfall all the way up to Loch Skeen - although sadly I didn’t have the time to go that far.
My final stop was the town of Moffat which is a popular place to base yourself if you’re wanting to explore the local area. I took a walk down the High Street, saw the narrowest hotel in the UK, strolled along the tiny lanes and roads and then found my guest house that I’ll booked to stay at - the Rockhill Guest House in Moffat. I’ll give you a quick tour and tell you how much it cost for me to stay the night.
A wonderful first day driving the South West Coastal 300 in Scotland. Stay tuned for more videos that document my travels around the rest of the route!

Thank you for watching. glad you're liking Scotland - it's a wonderful place and there's always something new to see. It's another location I really want to return to - I've driven the NC500 and SWC300 so going for a full set I'd love to drive the NE250 whenever I get the chance but we'll see. Take it easy!

That was absolutely brilliant Matt really was mate. Beautiful part of Scotland Dumfries and Galloway people heading for the highlands often just drive through it unaware of its beauty can’t wait for the other two instalments. Hope you included the Mull of Galloway one of my favourite locations. On a sad note I remember the Lockerbie air disaster very well I was 29 at the time couldn’t believe what I was seeing as it unfolded on the TV news at the time.

Thanks so much Kevin, I really appreciate you saying. I couldn't agree more that people who drive straight through it are missing out - hopefully my videos can do the area a little bit of justice. Believe it or not there are going to be at least 8 videos in this series, I'm really looking forward to making them and sharing them here on YT. The Mull of Galloway was indeed on my list so it'll definitely be featured on a future episode - totally agree it's a wonderful area. The Lockerbie disaster is so sad and to see those houses missing in Sherwood Crescent is chilling, I'm glad I got to visit the memorial in the cemetery but horrific to see all of those innocent names. Thanks for watching, and thanks again for your comment - hope you enjoy the rest of the series.

Thanks Kathy, glad you enjoyed it. I was thinking of how many people drive up from England to the big cities or northern Scotland and completely miss the south. I’d love to visit Edinburgh, did you enjoy your stay?

Thank you so much for this video series ❤I am going their in June and it was very helpful and what beautiful shots! I did find myself having turning down the volume 🫣the sound was very good i don’t think you need to raise you voice. Even though you might think so because of surrounding noise like running water or traffic. We can hear you perfectly 👌🏼

Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the videos and hopefully they prove useful when you visit. Thanks for the feedback on the volume, I do have a tendency to speak loudly at times so I'm working on that, I also had a slight issue with the audio settings for some of these videos (the later ones) where I had the mode set to wind reduction so it all sounded like I was on the telephone. I will continue working on my voice though, need to dial it down a notch or two. Good luck with your trip, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time!

Thanks, quite a bit of planning went into the trip but as always there are things that are out of your control. Gotta say though, I love the planning and organising side especially when it comes to road trips with so many options. Yes very sad about the air disaster, I visited the memorial in Washington DC many years ago and so visiting the town of Lockerbie has always been on my list. It was interesting and emotional to visit the place where it all happened. Keep your eyes peeled for next weeks video - another world record coming at ya!!

I've heard of the SWC300, but don't know much about it to pleased to know you have a mini series on this! 🙏 Really liked the animated map of how you'll tackle the route. Did you create that animation yourself? Really appreciated your visit to the Lockerbie memorial, such a terrible tragedy. I was only 2 when it happened so don't remember it, but do distinctly remember my mum telling me about it when I was young! Loved the Moffat Valley hike, such stunning views even without the waterfall - throw that in and it's mind blowingly beautiful! Really looking forward to the videos still to come in this area.

Thanks, glad you like the map. Yes I made it myself, took ages!! The map is a custom Google map, and then I drew each 'journey' onto its own individual layer using the brush tool in Photoshop. I then imported it into Premiere with layers still intact and masked in each 'journey' to reveal the lines one by one. It was a bit fiddly and it wasn't perfect (especially the south sections) but it seemed to work out alright. Quite proud of it 😊. Glad you like the video, I had enjoyed the North Coast 500 so much I wanted to take on another road trip in Scotland - the South West Coastal seemed like one of the lesser known ones so I thought I'd give it a try.

What is the reason for the fuel shortages? cool locations here and the waterfall was great footage
@MattWhitingsEurope
@MattWhitingsEurope 2 жыл бұрын
It was caused by a lack of lorry drivers to get the fuel into forecourts and public panic. Once people realised there might be a problem with fuel everyone went out and filled their car up - which made the problem worse! Glad you enjoyed the video - yes the waterfall and associated walk near Moffat was wonderful, would have loved to continue the walk but time wasn't on my side!
