DVD is still relevant despite it´s age. Having the possibility to have your own library of films and watch it anytime without any of them suddenly disappear beats any streaming service.

Yes and that goes with Blu-Ray too. Digital has its place but can never replace physical media.

Have a few Sony S7000s and they still work 100%, play old and new discs with no problems, absolute workhorses.

Tired of paying for wifi and my movies and shows lagging all the time I decided to start a dvd collection like a year ago and I'm so glad I did!! It's been so much fun!! I have about 500 movies just from going to thrift stores and garage sales!! Physical copies are forever as long you take care of it, with streaming services that stuff can end at any time!! Dvds are so cheap now you can get a decent sized collection within a few months and it's just fun to collect diffrent stuff!!

What a great video clip. I love how he mentions the 17GB storage capacity. Now we're at 100GB triple layered discs and 4K image on the same size disc. It's nuts.

@@Mobik_ Bluray disc's are 25GB and 50GB respectively and 4K disc's are 66GB and 100GB disc's The various dvd formats range between 4.7GB for a DVD 5 up to 17GB for a DVD 18. Trevor

It’s crazy to think how DVDs are now retro. Everything is going digital and I don’t think it’s bad completely but having a library of movies in you own house to look at and choose from is one of the best experiences ever for a collector

DVD‘s are actually still selling pretty well. My local Walmart has more dvds on sale than Blu-rays

It's crazy how they thought DVDs were gonna be the "wave of the future" when they were only popular for about a decade. Tech moves so fast now, these people had no idea how quickly DVDs would be replaced by streaming services with almost infinite selection and no hardware required. I still do prefer DVDs/VHS personally. Instead of cable or streaming services where you have to pay for a wide selection, with DVDs you only have to pay once for your favorite movies and then have them forever. I thrift my DVDs for about a buck a piece, it's more economical for me than buying a steaming service and paying mostly for movies I don't like and won't watch. Not to mention the nostalgia that comes with physical media. Everything is online now and it just feels so disconnected.

COOL!! I want one, I'm going to start saving up for one immediately ...The size of those dvd's is unreal, I reckon I'm going to get 3 times the amount of movies on my shelves than with my tapes...I just hope the quality of the discs is good and they last a long time and don't start wearing out too quickly ..I'm excited man!

I have always wanted to hook up a Dolby 5.1 surround system like the guy is mentioning. It just seems like so much work or too confusing. I know using an amp is involved.

Wow, I have to admit I'd totally forgotten about the early DVDs with 4:3 on one side and widescreen on the other. And I mean, I have at least one of them myself, a copy of _Trainspotting_ from the 90s with 4:3 on one side and 16:9 on the other.

Some studios like Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, Columbia/Tri-Star and a few others used to have this pratice until they stopped doing it. However a few others did years later (one of them is The Boondock Saints Unrated 2-Disc Special Edition DVD, with disc 1 is a double sided disc containing 2 different aspect ratios).

Haha I remember divx. I bought one and remember never really buying any divix dics till they went under. One day i walked into circuit city and all their divx movies were selling for 25 cents each. I bought every copy they had. I think I spent like 25 or 30 bucks and got over 100 different movies and some movies buying more then once. Some discs i never opend and saved and reaold them to collector's for alot more. The rest I kept and watched once then just kept them as a fun little collection of a falied product. Haha.

In my opinion the DVD was the videocassette of the digital new digital age. The early images I remember seeing on the format where not all that spectacular. The sound was superior on some titles but not all. I compared the format to Laserdisc the way I compared the compact disc to vinyl; it wasn’t really music, it was just convenience. But on the other hand, Blu ray and 4K are definitely superior in every way when compared with both DVD and Laserdisc. Again, just an opinion.

@EM Call me a dinosaur if you want, but I honestly still prefer the safety net of having a hard copy. Streaming is fine, but if I love a title, I want it on Blu-Ray or preferably 4K. Streaming still hasn't quite reached the level of perfection that I'm looking for where I'd totally give up physical media. (Not to mention there have been a lot of issues lately with things being censored on streaming, which isn't a problem with physical media.)

Imagine someone coming onto the show from 2023 and telling them how things are now? Person from 2023: All this stuff is now worthless. We now just pay for shows and movies that you don't actually hold in your hands, they're just floating around out there somewhere, it's like paying for thin air actually, and they can be snatched back from you at any time and you don't get a refund. Sometimes bits from shows and movies just get edited out. The picture quality is worse too. Man and woman in the show: That's a bit crap isn't it?

I'm surprised DVDs are still being used despite being in standard definition. I mean, I still use them, but it's because I don't have a Blu-ray player and my modern HDTV is somehow worse than my 13" CRT TV from nearly a decade prior.

Dvds and blue ray will always beat streaming services as you can watch movies and shows when you want instead of rights being swapped from streaming platforms and you have to pay more

How much has changed over the years. Now you can buy a dvd for less than $5 in a bargin bin. Same thing with dvd players for just $30. Most household still have dvd players. Forturately, I have kept up the changes in technology. Everything now has gone digital. Like I said, how much has changed.

I prefer having on my movies digital because its more convenient and you can never lose them they go with you where ever you go plus with digital you won't have to worry about another format coming out

DVD is the only way for archiving computer data for hundreds of years. M-Disk blu ray is good but expensive for one, and I’m not risking losing 25gb of data if one disc fails to read. Losing 4.7gb is much easier to recover from. DVD will be relevant for data archiving for many many years to come.

For a home user burning a dvd, the chemicals on the disc degrade over time. It’s not a great medium for long term storage for this reason.

@@smileychess The only thing g that degrades a disc is sunlight. Oxygen does as well but takes hundreds of years using archival grade discs. Solution is to keep them on a cool and dark place in a vacuum sealed bag. Mine are vacuum sealed inside a safe. For consumers, it’s the only feasible long term solution.

@@EyeForKnowledge. - As long as you've done your research on how to do it properly, that's great. The vast majority of people will fail to do this, and have the painful discovery that their discs stop reading after a decade.

@@smileychess I currently have cd’s that I bought in the early 90’s that I never cared for. Stored them in the glovebox of my car for years and then they were just sitting in a drawer. Open to all the heat and cold of my car. albeit free from sunlight and they still play to this day. I’ve never personally experienced disc degradation in any form. Even old PlayStation 1 discs still play that have been sitting inside a cabinet not in a case, scratched to hell, open to sunlight. If you do nothing to care for a disc, I can personally testify from my experience that will last 25-30 years. Taken care of they’ll last a lifetime or two.

@@EyeForKnowledge. - When you mention the PlayStation 1 disc, that's not what I'm talking about. Those discs (and all factory manufactured discs) are physically etched and can last a lifetime if taken care of. We were talking about consumer writable dsics, the kind that you burn your own data to. Those use a chemical layer which degrades over time, especially in poor conditions.

DVD...sigh. Now there's Blu-ray. Well, I say now, it's been out for a long time. It's funny when you look back and see how they made it out to be something fantastic. I suppose the same will be thought of for Blu-ray once that starts to be thought of as really inferior. It's always amusing to see how technology from YEARS/decades ago was bigged up. Of course, back then it would have been thought of as really superior. Fastforward 25 years, not at all, obviously.

DVDs/Blu-Ray will ALWAYS be better than streaming. Streaming is gay and lame for the most part. Aside from a few exceptions of course (like HBO Max). But yeah DVD/Blu Ray >>>>>> streaming.

@@obvioushieidude7668 The thing with streaming is, it's far worse quality than content from discs is. The time might come when streaming matches the quality of stuff from discs, but that will be a long time yet. The whole world will likely have to be on really fast connections, even just English speaking countries.

@@zx50- All modern streaming services provide a higher resolution and bitrate compared to DVD. You only start to get better quality when you jump to blu-ray.
