Here's my guess as to what normal radius means. You know how the brush rotates around in 3 dimensions to hug the mesh? Well, when doing cloth you get a lot of little bumps, and so the brush would be rotating all over the place. So, instead of sampling a single face for the normal, it samples several faces to decrease the brush jumping all around. Normal radius allows you to change how large that sample radius is.

@classicyup3306 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm..interesting you could be right!
@fcat2148
@fcat2148 4 жыл бұрын
Not quite what it does. Normal Radius is an existing feature for normal sculpting brushes in Blender. Having a higher value will mask out areas in the falloff area of the brush that are of extreme contrasting normals compared to the are being directly influenced. I don't know if I explained it correctly but it essentially is used to preserve sharp edges while sculpting.
@Fireflyepic
@Fireflyepic 4 жыл бұрын
@@fcat2148 You sure about that? I went into blender and tested it, my theory seems to be correct. A larger blender radius value causes the brush hugging the mesh to jump around less, and a value of 0 causes the brush to align only to the normal directly where the mouse cursor is. I noticed no such difference with the sharpness of the edges.

For some guys who can't visually see the Face Sets at 16:48, 1. Check upper right corner at the viewport with the ben diagram button (display) - the mask visibility settings must be checked. 2. Check if your subsurf modifier has realtime off. (The monitor shaped button).

My own efforts with the cloth brush were especially bad, but now, with your help, so much better. I was gonna add a render of an old couch model with bits re-made using your techniques, but y'know, I'm old and have no idea how. Suffice to say, where I changed stuff is so obvious, and so much better. Thank you.

From the tooltip text I would say that the "Normal Radius" Setting determines the radius in which vertices are used to compute the normal of the surface you are using the brush on. So if it's set to 0.5 it will only consider parts of the mesh that are within half the brush radius to get the "up" direction for the brush.

@BlenderGuru the Normal Radius is the size the sphere that calculates the normal in relation to the normals at the edge of the sphere. This addition makes hard surface sculpts easier as the Normal Radius settings with a scrape brush can preserve the angles of adjacent normal faces for example, making more defined edges with less smoothing.

normal radius does exactly what the tooltip (6:19) says i guess.... some of the operations (mostly the Push) require a direction in which they act. and for that the normal of the surface will be used. the factor describes the size of the inner (orange) circle in relation to the outer (orange) circle seen at 2:21. the inner circle is used to get the average normal over the area and so push in this example will not only push straight down but also push off to the side once you have created as divet and move you cursor
