Mercury-6 is a meticulous recreation of the Jupiter-6 analog polyphonic synthesizer, initially released in 1983. Sandwiched between the earlier Jupiter-4 and Jupiter-8 models in name only, the sophisticated Jupiter-6 has sometimes been considered a sleeper release. These days, it has persevered to become one of Roland's most notable and coveted classic synthesizers due to its distinctive dark and complex character. If you've long yearned to explore the Jupiter-6, you'll love Mercury-6!

Mercury-6 is now available at cherryaudio.com and authorized resellers worldwide for Windows and macOS, including macOS 13 Ventura and native Apple M1 processor support, including Apple M1 Ultra. I had a Jupiter 6 for many years and it's really worth investing time getting to know how it works. I would say that it's much more than a 'workhorse' synth. It can produce very exotic, esoteric timbres, and has sonic capabilities that the Jupiter 8 can't match. Cherry Audio have done a fabulous job! Well done!!!

Anyone who doesn't know, Cherry Audio is one of the absolute best brands around. I've been using their software for several years now (when they only had 4 synths) & WOW! I have several of the other big brands, CA hold their own, and in many instances manage to punch passed the others. Even where there's crossover, though, they can be used as unique patch library bots (yeah, spoken like a blind consumer gear junky).

Thank you. I have been screaming to the heavens for over a decade imploring someone to make a Jupiter 6 soft synth. I even sent a couple messages to you guys! Finally the wait is over and it feels like Christmas over here! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Considering your previous works I have every confidence that this won't disappoint . . . And another huge thanks for keeping the ability to select multiple waveshapes per oscillator - this is essentially why no version of the MKS80 was ever a satisfactory replacement for a Jupiter 6 (imho).

The Super Jupiter/MKS-80 (rev 3, 4, or 5 (I have a rev 4 and a rev 5)) was never meant to be either a Jupiter 6 or a Jupiter 8. Am surprised Roland have yet to make the Jupiter 6 cloud VST. UVI have had their “Saturn 6” out for a while as part of their JP Legacy collection, and isn’t too bad, but also isn’t $49 like this. I do hope the Super Jupiter gets some VST love as it’s pads are excellent and UVI didn’t do enough with their version (Mercury 80).
@w.jamesmeagher7895
@w.jamesmeagher7895 Жыл бұрын
@@ohheyitskevinc Yeah, I realize that the MKS-80 was never meant to be a “one-to-one” Jupiter 8 or Jupiter 6 in a box. However, when you are pining for a Jupiter 6 and can’t find or afford one, the first suggestion everyone throws out to you is a late revision MKS-80. And for the most part they aren’t entirely wrong but having used a Jupiter 6 for years I was super disappointed that the MKS-80 couldn’t mix multiple waveforms per oscillator like a Jupiter 6 can.
@drsamurai009
@drsamurai009 Жыл бұрын
@@w.jamesmeagher7895 agreed about multiple waveforms. Same goes for the Prophet 5. Glad the reissue of that brought that back. Seems like so many hardware manufacturers went the route of dialing waveform shapes and modulating the function for animation. Combing waves makes IMO more rich and complex oscillator tones to feed into filters. I've never had a Jupiter 6 (or 8) but looking forward to trying this bad boy out!
@ohheyitskevinc

@@w.jamesmeagher7895 yeah multiple waveforms on the VCO is a bit of a miss (although with a dodgy MPG-80 controller, you can just about confuse the switches into accidentally giving you two). Control over aftertouch and velocity on the MKS is good. They’re both very good hardware wise.

I’ve just spent a couple of very enjoyable hours tinkering with this synth and I would recommend it to anyone who loves to program their own sounds and to people who are beginning their synth programming journey. The layout is so clear and intuitive whilst still having all the key features needed. No hidden pages and no over complicated features that may well confuse people new to programming or even just simply get in the way for experienced programmers. And most importantly it sounds excellent with a great selection of very useable presets that you’ll be shaping to fit your tracks in no time. Another great job by Cherry. I’m old enough to have been around when this was released and learnt my programming craft on this and similar synths. A time when libraries where very limited and we needed to be able to program from scratch or close to it. So given that perspective I can almost guarantee that you will be crafting appropriate edits and creating fresh, interesting sounds very quickly with the clear, concise design and clear audio sound path.

I bought my JP6 at West LA Music at the same time as James Horner bought his. I was disappointed in the thin sounding LPF with lack of bottom end compared to the JP8. Also disappointed in the lack of random arpeggiation and lack of layering. The BPF and HPF were excellent however. I sold mine before I heard about the Europa upgrade. I probably would have kept it if I had done the upgrade. However, I got the Super Jupiter MKS-80 module with the programmer, and glad I did. Plenty of bass and very fat. Then again, I love the improvements Cherry Audio added to the Mercury-6, making it a definite improvement over the JP8, but it would have been nice if the Mercury-6 had the additional features of the Europa upgrade, especially the additional arpeggiator modes. Nice review.

I don't suppose I can get them into the Cherry Audio version. Maybe through a Jupiter in and then get them out via Sysex. But then they have to be able to be loaded into the Mercury 6 then. Many of the sounds are really atmospheric and soundscape like.

I'm not sure if its the layering, but the quality of the osc and snappy env have more presence and have that woody oomph that real analogues have. Feels like the quality has been stepped up a notch. It was great before, but consider UHE and Softube the industry standard, for analog emulation, this one makes CA join them at that next level quality for reality and attention to detail. And perfect that it was done on a synth that no one else has released yet.

@@regotcha Its a kind of a dick question on my part, but both software and hardware developers recreating (and usually improving on) now public domain synth designs without the original manufacturers benefitting, or even being acknowledged. That said, Tim states in this really good video very clearly that this is a recreation of Roland Jupiter 6, however other videos, (not Cherry Audio) dance around the facts and go out of their way to avoid stating what the thing is. There are a couple direct comparisons between the Mercury 6 and real Jupiter 6 synths on YT that demonstrate the contrary. Judging from the top two that come up, the software is about 95% dead on to the hardware. There are just a few particular sounds that it's not quite as accurate in emulating. But as others have pointed out, for $49 vs $5000 +, it's a no brainer. Especially when you don't have to worry about the vst breaking down and needing expensive repairs. When used in an actual song or piece of music, nobody would ever be able to tell the difference. There's also FAR more polyphony on the vst as well as other features not available on the original.
@juno6
@juno6 5 күн бұрын
@@Abruzzo333 it's very subjective. Also depends on your taste along with your ears plus experience. We're in a field full of amateurs, don't forget. Most synth users work in an office. Even if both synths sounded the same (which do not), being in front of a real hardware synth is a completely inspiring experience compared to a screen with a $49 software. If you compare a sawtooth wave they'll probably sound the same, but as you add complexity to the sound, VA synths begging to deflate... You have the *illusion* that they sound the same because you *see* something that resembles what you actually want. It's like watching po... Another amateur myth is that in a mix you can't distinguish between the og and a plugin... Nothing further from the truth... Real analogue sits better in a mix, you feel the bass without the need to crank up the volume, the highs are sweeter... But if you're happy with the software, and make great music... 👍👍👍

@@juno6 Well, I've been producing for over 25 years. Have released records and also worked on soundtracks, I have 11 hardware synthesizers and 4 hardware samplers but also use a host of software. In recent years I've sold a couple of those synths after comparing a few of my favorite custom patches and finding the vst to be spot on. On the contrary, there's also the illusion that when you sit in front of a peice of hardware, you believe that it is doing something magic that software somehow can't achieve. I'll admit, there is a subtle difference when you're actually sitting in the room listening to an isolated vintage synth. totally disagree about hardware sitting in the mix ay better. If most were blindfolded, they would not be able to pick the hardware from the software in a mix. There are actually several such blindfold tests on yt in which people fail miserably. Saying that the comparison video such as the one by Starsky Carr don't sound close ...I find such statements to be laughable and a little delusional. As I've said, it wont nail every patch exactly but then again the same can be said about two different anologue synths of the same model. The sound is about 95% there. In some cases 98% there. I often wonder if people who deny this are more like synth collectors and not people who actually produced music with their instuments.

Wave for wave, there isn’t a huge difference in the VCOs (though we still redesigned the DSP because the J4 and J6 did use different chips). The biggest difference you’d see/hear is the J6/M6 ability to select *multiple* simultaneous waveforms per VCO, definitely not something J4/M4 could do.

I honestly don't get the layering thing. Two synths are better than one, but we're on computers; we have infinite copies of that first synth anyway. This choice just means most of the presets don't really sound like a Jupiter-6. Is there a way to only browse single-layered patches?

Am I rambling I'll stop thanks

It would have been great to just hear the presets (as many as possible) and not hear him talk so much. But, unfortunately, we got the latter.

There are a number of other videos that demonstrate the presets such as kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLuPlZiC3JPUiZs.html and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mceZrJSrtpmlk6s.html . And we always feature an audio playlist of presets in action on our product pages, such as cherryaudio.com/products/mercury-6#sounds
