My highschool band had a year where we had way too many trumpets and zero french horns - my band teacher put me and a handful of other trumpet players on the flugelhorn and made us play into our stands to mimic a horn sound… I got to play all the french horn melodies when we held our Nutcracker Concert. One of the most memorable moments I had… nostalgia

I used to have a Getzen Eterna S 4 valve flugelhorn and that was hands down the best playing flugelhorn I had ever played. The addition of the fourth valve gave me so many possibilities for the lower notes. Great Video.

I have a Mahillon flugelhorn with four valves, Wilford Roberts model. It’s a Belgian horn, built by the Sear family and I bought it from Walter Sear around 1967. I’m told that they were often used by police and military orchestras, particularly in Nordic and Benelux Countries. It does fill in the gap as you explain, but I also try, with my three valve horns, to do so with a combination of lip adjustments, close hearing and slide triggers. I hope that this supplements your presentation, which I find informative and helpful.

fun fact: in the Dutch fanfare orchestras, the flugelhorn is the defining instrument of the band, and pretty much fills the role clarinets have in concert bands and cornets in brass bands.

Just bought a flugelhorn today. Bought it from the band I've played in for the last 14 years. My instructor told me that it was the same horn he used to play when he ws active in the band (30+ years ago). Its an old Conn. The valve guide on the 1st valve is broken though so I need to have that fixed

Curious thing calling the Flügelhorn a "Piccolo Euphonium" because that's actually what it is. Tuba players don't like admit it but Flügelhorns, Euphoniums and Tubas are all members of the same family, the tuba family. In fact, Tubas are just valved Bugles.

Would it be easy to transition from the baritone horn to the flugelhorn? I want to branch out to it, but I'm worried that the mouthpiece might be a little too small compared to what I'm used to on the baritone horn.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm a freshman going into high school, and I have played the baritone/euphonium since April, and it's not really a jazz instrument, so I have the option for trumpet, but I tried to make a compromise on trying flugelhorn instead of trumpet, so it's a possibility.

Mouthpiece for flugelhorn should be V Shape cup and as deep as you can for a true flugelhorn sound, when you play it is more of a Puff and the trumpet you blow, if possible match the Mouthpiece rim size and thickness to your trumpet and cornet to save your lips and the work you have done to train them to your usual instrument, or your endurance will suffer, most important above anything is making sure that you have the correct mouthpiece that suits your type of flugelhorn and fits into the tuning pipe receiver, how the flugelhorn and receiver is designed and built, they normally have a coller to strengthen the pipe end so the mouthpiece doesn't damage or stretch it and you can pull it out, be careful with the other end because it is tapered for a smooth airflow mine is like a razor blade that end, try as many as you can ignore its price, experience level and what others say or think, the sound in your head is what you want, it will make no difference to anything because you will be trying to make the sound on all of them, so if you can find the closest, you will be working on improving , would you race a model T Ford against a new Ford? Stupid yes, would you buy fakes and copies of horns, no you wouldn't and shouldn't, ever wondered why the Bach Strad hasn't changed much over hundred years? And how many professional players and section leaders have only played Strads , because they have been told its the best but never tried any modern advanced brands or trumpets, just continue to play model T Ford, they don't realise they are playing and have paid thousands for fakes, copies and the reason they haven't changed or advanced is because Bach hasn't got a clue, all he did was buy a French Besson trumpet, take every bit apart measure them all, find out what they are made off and then copy them and has been selling them as handmade professional trumpets, This is easy to find out about because he openly admitted it and has got away with fraud all the time,,so stop supporting a rip off out of date copy, stop driving model T Ford when you could be even better than you are ,because of bad advice, before the mid 70s his reputation for mouthpieces was that they were crap the sizes and letters meant nothing because they were totally different and couldn't match your old one by Bach mouthpiece cup and size values, this is all true facts that are easily found, my 2 favourite flugelhorns out of owning and trying 50 plus easily, is Taylor Phat Boy and Jupiter 746, worst by miles blessing artist flugelhorn that is probably why they all seem in such good condition, get bought because the artist trumpet is great and played a few weeks and put in the case up in the loft, so try as many as you can trumpets as well, mouthpieces to because the Holy grail mouthpiece is real just very hard to find, hope this helps someone,

Why does the flugelhorn leadpipe go straight through the valve block, so unlike the trumpet? I find my flugelhorn so much easier to play then trumpet, as far as accuracy, slotting, endurance, even range… Despite the much deeper mouthpiece. Does this have anything to do with the more free-flowing air pathway?
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 3 жыл бұрын
The flugelhorn only has a very short section of cylindrical tubing and then the tubing is tapered. You cannot put the valve section in the tapered portion. Because of that, the valves need to be right at the beginning of the instrument.
@ronrobbins2737
@ronrobbins2737 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheBrassandWoodwindShop that’s fascinating, thanks! I wonder if any trumpets are designed the same way?
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop
@TheBrassandWoodwindShop 3 жыл бұрын
On trumpets, the leadpipe is tapered and then the tubing goes into the tuning slide. So the first opportunity to install the valve section is after the tuning slide. However, on a herald trumpet, the valve section goes right after the leadpipe. If you are interested in seeing me work on a herald trumpet, here is the link to the playlist. kzfaq.info/sun/PLtJyi3RgtJ2ux9MXkjQ3xNs5l6vIC13zy

@@TheBrassandWoodwindShop So interesting, thanks! After playing a high-end flugel exclusively for many years, I lost even the meager trumpet chops I had. Now I’m playing a hybrid horn, a Brent Peters “PUJE.” Part trumpet/part Cornet, flugelhorn mouthpiece with trumpet shank (custom designed by BRENT). Cool little horn, his Shorty model.

Oh trust me I wouldn’t part with my Kanstul 1525, but it’s kind of like a big fragile delicate work of art and that big copper bell gets dented practically just by looking at it! The little Shorty hybrid horn is half the size, can sound like a trumpet, Cornet, almost Flugel, And for practicing has a nice compact sound and can play normal pedal tones.
