Shouldn’t we teach that a function is not just a rule, but a rule equipped with an input type and output type? This can be visualized as a kind of factory, where we know what goes in and what should come out. This becomes important when you need to invert certain “functions”. The function sq: R -> R has no inverse, but sq+: R_+ -> R_+ does, namely the square root function sqrt: R_+ -> R_+. Also, this coincides better with the way a type theorist, computer scientist, and category theorist would think of a function.

I needed some time to seperate functions from graphs for me they were one because we only talked about functions when making graphs in school.

Why do use a verticsl line to check its points? Why not a horizontal line?

But, how'll y^2 = x turn to when it's changed to y = sqrt(x)? Is it still a function when it turned to the other one?
@themango494
@themango494 5 жыл бұрын
y = sqrt(x) becomes a function as the square root only returns the positive answer. So sqrt(4) will only return positive two, not negative two.

Isn't it arbitrary whether you choose x or y to be your input or output.

Yes, it is, but also it is assume that x is the input conventionally

just wondering, is the circle centred at the origin because x = 0?
@ti84satact12
@ti84satact12 4 жыл бұрын
It's centered at the origin because the x and y coordinates are BOTH zero.

A function g( x,y) is defined as the two- digit number of the form 10x + y. Another function f(x,y,n) = xn +yn+1 is defined where x,y & n are positive integers and x,y ∈(0,9]. How many set of values are possible such that f(x,y,n) = g(x,y) . please solve this
