Interested in shooting long range, but don't know where to begin?
Follow along as I dive into the basic fundamentals of long range shooting with a rifle you may already have.
This video is an introduction to some of the topics I will be covering along the way. The next video in this series will cover rifle setup, gear & equipment needed, and more.
Purpose:
I decided to make a few videos touching on this topic, because I myself was intimidated by the skills and equipment required to shoot at distance. My goal with these next few videos is to teach you the basics you need to know before heading to the range and wasting expensive ammunition.
I highly recommend watching more experienced long range shooters talk about the subject, instead of taking information solely from myself. I believe I can resonate with those of you who are "lost", as I was in those shoes just months ago. I still have a lot to learn myself, but this should inspire some confidence in those of you who are unsure where to start.
Thanks for watching

I got into long range shoot when I lived out in Vegas. I started with an Anderson lower and trued upper with a decent trigger with a white oak 1:7 barrel. When I do my part its a sub MOA gun. This got the wife hooked so we ended up with a second AR, which is a similar setup. I then picked up a Ruger RPR in 6.5 CM, which was my retirement present to myself. Later built an AR10 on Aero receivers with a Criterion 22" 6.5 CM barrel for my wife. Cleckner's book is a great starting point. Another good source of info is the video's that Frank Gali has up on Sniper's Hide. Yeah its $20 a month to get access to them, but they are good videos. I would also suggest going to a few local PRS type matches once you get your feet wet and have a little range time. The folks there are usually really nice and helpful. Its some of the cheapest training you will ever get.

I shoot my match conditioned AR-15A2 in NRA Long Range Competition, Service Rifle Division, iron sights. This is the most difficult shooting competition. Only well trained shooters bringing great knowledge and skill to the 1000 yard line will get good results but the beginner will do well to enter such competition because it inspires marksmanship development like no other competition. Now, where to start? Attend the United States Army Marksmanship Unit’s Small Arms Firing School. It’s a three day event the last weekend of July at Camp Perry, Ohio taught by Champion Military Shooters/Instructors who cover everything important to good shooting and where shooters will come to realize while a match conditioned rifle and match grade ammunition are essential to long range shooting it is marksmanship that is paramount. On the conclusion of training, participants can enter an Army authorized M16 Match to both test and celebrate their training. Shooters finishing in top ten percent will earn 4 points toward the 30 needed to win the prestigious US Distinguished Rifleman Badge. At any rate, the greater the distance the more knowledge and skill is needed to hit where aimed and when bringing a .223 iron sight Service Rifle to the long line the shooter must have strategies for aiming when the target cannot even be seen and to sense wind changes as little as 1 mph which if not countered will displace bullet over 10 inches from point of aim. Lots of fun when the shooter comes to the range fully prepared. But, before attending any “long range school” ask for instructor credentials in long range, like wins and classification in Long Range Competitions. You would be surprised that some instructors have no classification in Long Range. Also, if you take a course and come away without complete comprehension of MOA wind constant formula, slope dope, and mil ranging formula ask for a refund because you did not learn anything. Now, to the author: trigger control and sight alignment are the two principles of marksmanship and a solid position supports these principles but watching your breathing is no longer doctrine because it is a distraction to concentration on the principles. If no thought is given to breathing the shooter will always shoot during natural respiratory pause which is what is needed. The book you recommended is excellent and another is the USAMU’s Service Rifle Guide.

Yeah man you're right on the money. BCM Upper, DD RIS II Rail, with a DD S2W profile 18" CHF Chrome lined 5.56 Barrel. Not an ideal barrel for precision accuracy, but it works!

Good video. I recently just got into LR shooting with my PSA AR10 gen 2 with a NF nx8 2.5x20-30mm and an omega suppressor. Haven’t been able to shoot her yet as I’m about to deploy but I’ll be back home in a year to shred it. In the future, Would you be able to make a video on shooting long range suppressed with an emphasis on if the novice shooter needs to upgrade their gas block/buffer spring?

Have a good deployment. That would be a different subject entirely. I reccomend you look at a video of tuning the AR platfrom gas system.

Long range ballistics actually IS rocket science… the difference being that with shooting you have one short propulsion event, and with “normal rockets” you usually have continuous propulsion. This is not to say that this is difficult, only that rocket science might be easier than most of us think.

It took me a long time to get enough money to buy me a 308 AR-10. Now that ammo is sky high l can't afford to buy a lot of ammo.

Honestly you don't need a ton to get good. The biggest thing is consistency, like everything else. If you put 40 well thought out rounds down range a week, you're far ahead of the curve.

Question 7.62 or 308

I started my long range journey with an AR-10. Learned pretty quick magazine restrictions suck and there is a wall you can’t surpass until you go to a bolt gun.

I started long range (briefly) with a bolt gun, then re-purposed it to a hunting only rifle. 20" Bbl .308 Win. Want to play around with reloading for a little while before I choose a caliber for a dedicated LR bolt gun. For now, the semi-autos will suffice.

@@crayoneater556 I started with .308. Any question you would ever have there will be an answer to. I use the Erik Cortina method for my load development. His method is very simple stupid and eliminates confusion imo.

There’s no wall at all. US Service Rifle Competition proves it where good shooters can shoot scores which rival those shot by Any Rifle/Any Sight Competitors firing bolt action rifles. And, in fact semi-auto shooters have an advantage in rapid fire stages of competition. They have more time to dress up their sight picture, as well as maintain NPA.
@albundy7459
@albundy7459 Жыл бұрын
@@charlesludwig9173 you can’t hold a bullet out farther and shove in more powder with a magazine. That’s your wall. I lost .040 worth of case capacity in a 168 match king simply because of a magazine. That .040 could have the optimal nodes for my rifle, but I’ll never know because I can’t push past 2.840.

@@albundy7459M118LR easily gets to 1000 yards nose on from an M14 as will all factory match 175 grain loadings. At any rate, powder capacity for mag tolerant cartridges precluding results from a semi auto .308 is either your imaginary problem or an excuse. Shoot RE-15. Shoot 175’s. And shoot a match conditioned rifle. The only thing that will preclude best results will be your marksmanship.

Very good, not a COMMERCIAL video like that pimp West Desert Shooter. I concur with you, you can shoot Extra long range with 5.56NATO, especially if you load your own.! I have been shooting my 1985 Match Grade FN FNC with a 19.8inch custom ordered FN made barrel, at 600, 800 and 1000 meter matches at Various Military bases open to Vets. Camp Pendleton is my "home base" you might say. I'm USAF retired, 20th Spl Ops Sqn. I'm currently building up a 1200 meter AR 15 based on a PSA Forged lower and upper with their premium SS 20" barrel. The 223 Rem/ 5.56 NATO is optimized for a 20 inch barrel. Yes, the 5.56 can do it!

I shoot an AR in 1000 yard NRA Iron Sight Service Rifle Division Competition. My loading is 24.8 grains of RE-15 under an 80 grain Berger in new Winchester Brass primed with Win. Primers. This loading barely gets to the 1000 yard line nose-on and yet it’s a very high pressure round. In fact cases cannot be loaded a second time. They will no longer hold primers. So, reading that you have a load which I suppose can get to 1200 meters, can you tell me the loading, as well as temperature and elevation?

I started with Aero Precision both in .223 and .308 and the first thing was to make both rifles fit me really well. For optics Arken SH-4 6-24x55 on the 308 and Primary arms FFP /.556ACSS 3-18x44. Krieger 24" fluted barrel with EC Tuner/brake V3 on the .308 and 16" WOA match barrel on the .223. The goal is just being as good as I can be with both rifles understanding they both have their limitations. I've been reloading my own match grade ammo for both and both are consistently inside 1MOA now and working toward .5MOA on a good day. Still doing a lot of load development though. Once my skills catch up with the rifles I'll consider a RPR or Tika. Current goal, master the wind, consistently shoot 1MOA at 1K yds with the 308 and consistent hits within 1MOA at 600 yds with the .223/77gr. @charlesludwig9173. The best shooters out there shoot service rifle. No supports, benches, bipods. Either minimal optic or iron sights. You want to learn to really shoot, go to a service rifle match. My back is too wrecked for much more than prone or an easy barricade anymore.
