What type of paper do you use?

@@sallymalec2685 Gina K. Designs white cardstock, both the heavy weight and layering weight work great. Super smooth surface!

@@kayfurnish8715 So the smooth surface takes a lot of the pastel? Is that if you use only PanPastel alone? Or PanPastel and pencil alone? I know that soft pastels fill up the tooth really fast and a smooth paper does not have much tooth, in my experience using Canson paper.

@@reneekroyer5104 I've found it works great, but I also seal it with a fixative. I haven't used pencils mixed with the Pan Pastels - just either used them for a background and stamped on them or used them as a coloring agent for a stamped image. I've read they don't have to be sealed, but last longer if they are sealed. I haven't tried not sealing the pastels because I figured they would rub off eventually. As a side note, I've not tried them on watercolor paper, but I am curious how that would work, so I may try it in the future. I just mostly work with Gina K. Designs cardstock because of the quality, and I can use Copic markers on it too, and Gamsol with Prismacolor pencils. Good all-around cardstock that is heavyweight for sturdiness.

@@kayfurnish8715 I have tried watercolor paper with pastels after applying clear gesso for some texture-tooth, but for me, it does not work well. And when I try applying fixative to anything, it turns dark and loses the luminoscity of pastels. I have some brown paper that another artist told me about that is acid free that she said worked well for pastel and did a demo of it, so I'll try that first, but I'll keep the Gina K Design cardstock in mind, too. Thank you for your help.

Panpastels can be used on almost any paper. The smoother the finish the lighter the finished card.

Hi Deborah. To make your colors a bit darker you can mix a touch of black with them. Just use a piece of scrap paper as a pallet and load your sponge up with color, smear it on your scrap paper in a small spot, add a small touch of black ( it is very vibrant), in a circular motion, mix it together. Keep adding color until you get what you want. I usually use a mini applicator when mixing colors.

Yes, you can just use a hairspray that doesn’t spit or Krylon for pastels.

Larry, you use the colorless blender.

I just use Walmart Pen and Gear 110 lb. card stock.

The colorless blender elongates the color making it easy to blend the colors together. It works especially well when making sky backgrounds.
