They can mean "If that's the case/If that's not the case" OR "If that happens/If that doesn't happen."

Hi Jennifer. I didn't get a notification of this new video on KZfaq. I don't know why. Anyway, I should tell that I will never be able to thank you enough for your efforts. 🌹🌷 Task: Are you planning to come to Egypt at any point in the future? If so, I would love to host you and your family as a little thank-you for your efforts in teaching us English. Bonus task: I think using the phrase "if anything" strengthen the meaning of the sentence and emphasizes what you have just said.

Yes, "even if it kills me (killed me)" implies that one invests (invested) great effort to achieve something. Suggestions: I was going to graduate from the university even if it killed me. I hadn't been sleeping well. I had spent hours planning and studying to achieve my goal, and I then finally did it.

"if anything" do emphasize an idea. I think it is similar to 'in fact' or 'actually'. For example "Sam didn't seem too disappointed at losing. If anything, he seemed relieved that it was all over.", "She is not thin - if anything she is rather plump."
@Englishwithjennifer

Thanks for the video. I have a question. I have been struggling with inversion. There the boss has arrived on time. If we start a sentence with a place adverbial we must invert. Why didn't we invert ? It should be Here has the boss arrived on time . Why isn't it written like that ?
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 2 жыл бұрын
Inversion can happen with "here" and "there: 1. Here comes the bride. 2. There goes all my money. In your sentence, "there" isn't needed: The boss has arrived on time. I think one factor is that my examples use the simple present and yours use the present perfect. We usually invert with simple verb forms (simple present and simple past). More examples: dictionary.cambridge.org/us/grammar/british-grammar/inversion

Thx for the lesson 😀 I got a bit confused... I understood that "If necessary" is better to use in formal talk, but also a little common in the informal. However, I couldn't get which one of the options (if necessary - if it's necessary) is more appropriate in informal talk, I don't want to sound like a strange using a expression that is more formal than other in informal english... Task: So I wonder if you could explain me which one is more appropriate in informal task. Otherwise, I won't be able to use the expression correctly. Bonus: I think that "if anything" emphasize the idea, because when you use that expression, you're saying that coffee toothpaste wouldn't freshen your breath. I hope I am right. 😵
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, "if necessary" tends to be more typical of formal English. Here are some examples: youglish.com/search/if%20necessary/us In very informal situations, you can say: "if we have to" or something like that. Correction: explain to me which one is more appropriate in an informal situation (Your use of "Otherwise" is great!) Bonus task: Yes! :)

@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrea. The list of implied conditionals (as I understand them) is longer than what I showed here. I'll continue the discussion in the next lesson on conditionals. :) I understand that "implied conditionals" are those that don't use a full IF-clause, so some words are implied rather than directly stated. The word "if" might also be implied.

I'd start a new sentence with "otherwise." Without more context, the sentence is a bit odd. Is the woman paying you to help? This makes more sense: She's paying me. Otherwise, I wouldn't help her. She pays me. Otherwise, I wouldn't help her.

Homework Task : 1. I'll do my homework. If not, I won't improve in grammar as I want. 2. They didn't go to bed early last Friday. If need be, I would have suggested them to do it. Bonus Task: Does the phrase "if anything" make a statement stronger or weaker? Answer: I think the phrase "if anything" emphasize and reinforce the previous idea or statement before it. For example: She takes care of her mother at night. If anything, there is always somebody that can do it.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Susana. 1 - Super! 2 - "If need be" is best for the future: They don't go to bed early, but they should. If need be, please give them a reminder at 9:00. (parent to babysitter) "If anything" is best used to emphasize a quality of some kind: She's never neglected her mother. If anything, she's caring and attentive, maybe to the point where she's not taking care of her own health. I'll give more examples in the next grammar lesson.

I can see those examples as logical responses or continuations of an exchange. 3) If need be, we can leave early. I don't mind. (My suggestion.) 6) I'd drop the "instead of" part because you're already presenting the alternative with "otherwise."

@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 6 жыл бұрын
Good ideas here! 1. I like that you post two possible outcomes. "If so" can also be understood as "If that's the case" and "If not" would be "if that's not the case." 2. In the second, let's focus more on necessity and less on a desire or preference. How about this? People shouldn't eat street food very often because it's not very healthy. They should only buy that food if necessary. (Note that often "if necessary" is the same as "when necessary" - - when there is no other choice and this is the only option.)
