This is a quick overview on how to replace the fork seals in inverted motorcycle forks. Almost all upside down forks look like this and are rebuilt in basically the same way. Be sure to reference your service manual for the specifics on your bike!

Trick factory Suzuki Mechanic taught me: When reinstalling forks ( with threaded axle ) Install non threaded fork first and set where desired. Tighten but not torqued. Then take other leg and install into clamps. Don't tighten but snug where fork leg can still be moved and twisted but is not falling out of clamps under its own weight. Rubber mallet can be used to smack bottom of fork leg or top to move up and down for micro adjustment. Be more careful on top to impact the edges and not the adjuster screw. Now take axle. (NO WHEEL) just axle, and install into fork legs. Threaded part should seat without any binding. Move threaded leg up or down as desired so threads do not bind at all. If correct, axle should be able to be spun back and forth into threaded leg with just finger and thumb with no binding. Super smooth rotation is your goal. Once achieved your legs are even. Torque clamps and check legs/axle again. If results are the same, forks are set. Another tip while doing this.. Take rubber mallet and smack triple clamps all around where they clamp forks when forks are set into them before Torque. This vibrates legs to seat in clamps with best calibration. Check axle one more time before installing the wheel. Recommend taking the time to remove front fairings when doing this job. It's more of a pain but access to bolts and using the mallett are so much easier. :)

Super clear and well produced video. I’ll be changing my seals and oil on my 2005 sv650 with 06 gsxr600 forks and this is exactly the info I need to do the job, thanks!

Great video. I just replaced the seals and oil on the Sachs forks on my Aprilia Tuono, which is a bit different than your GSXR setup but with enough overlap to make sense. Thanks.

Is it possible for forks to leak from the bottom, I mean the chrome tube that meets the mounting bracket for the caliper and axle? I had no fluid in my forks. Great video - thanks!

Thanks for the video....I however nearly cried when I saw the impact gun when tightening the caps back up. The fork caps call for 25 ft. lbs. My best friend is a car mechanic and calls me names when I start torque charting things....then when they come back apart easily the next time it all makes sense.

Also ppl you do not need that axel tool just keep your pinch bolts tight then loosen the nut side take it off then loosen the pinch bolts and tap the axel out which comes out pretty easy.

For those that don’t know the spring he took out and said pay attention to it that there is a top and bottom.. actually it’s tapered and you can visually see it.

mxr I did notice that and went into comments to see if anyone else did. Minus that it was a good thorough video. I will not be making that mistake on mine. Will be doing them as soon as I make a tool to compress springs

Great video man thank you! Hopefully this will be similar to my 04 r1 forks, I watched a video saying that I could just remove the bottom allen and not have to use a compressor tool but it just turns the internals of the fork, so I think im going to just order the tool through your link, but my question is how do I assure that I get that allen bolt back tight again? Thanks In advanced!
@MilesFromExtraordinary
@MilesFromExtraordinary 6 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, the spring compressor is definitely necessary to do this job safely without breaking anything. If you're spinning the internals, then you could try an impact gun electric, or pneumatic. Cheers!

Thanks! Taking them to a guy tomorrow who says he can do it no problem but if it seems to sketch ill order the tool and do it my self lol I appreciate the fast reply deff gained my sub thats for sure!

JustAnR1 - Sure thing. For this task we typically charge roughly $250 for time & materials. The hardest part is honestly removing the forks from the bike, the rest of it is pretty straightforward.
@JustinTwilley
@JustinTwilley 6 жыл бұрын
I agree my 04 r1 the lower clamp bolts were so hard to get to. and id pay you that right now lol yamaha shop wants 450$!! with forks already off and they say they wont use my oil or seals even though its all oem lol said I have to purchase it from them...there are no good shops near me unfortunately.
@MilesFromExtraordinary
@MilesFromExtraordinary 6 жыл бұрын
JustAnR1 - I wouldn't have them do it. That's ridiculous. With the forks off the bike, we'd basically do this task for $100. Invest in the tool, it will clearly pay for itself with just 1 use. No brainier to me if you already have the forks off.

I have a question I keep getting mixed answers on, I live in Houston and my cousin offered to sell his 14 Gsxr 600 for a 1000 that was in the flood we haven’t tried to start the bike yet I don’t even think he has drained the bike yet if there’s any flood water to begin with his bike was in the garage in his apartments I’m going to take a look at it this week just wanted to ask a Moto mechanic if it was damaged by the water can I be fixed?
@MilesFromExtraordinary
@MilesFromExtraordinary 6 жыл бұрын
BlackVegeta9000 - Anything can be fixed with enough time and money. But for real, it all depends on the water line and what got wet. It could be easy, it could be cheaper to buy something else. The bike would require a very close inspection.

9:50 When I bleed the cartridge, my fork oil only comes out when I pull the inner rod out and NOT when pushing it back in. What's going on? The problem does not occur on my other fork cartridge.

I wouldn't worry about that much, as long as you have good flow of fluid and no air.

not clear about "thicker side wall up & thinner down" when its the time of puttining the oil seal or if its in the direction fitted to motorcycle

Up being relative to the fork when you're holding it. It would be down when the forks are in place on the bike. Thanks for pointing that out!
