Jessica, thanks for the insightful information. However, I think there's another perspective to look at it. While it's definitely a great idea to hedge a portion of ones portfolio in USD, GBPs, ie forex, there's something to say for tbills when compounding interest comes in. Although the analysis and outcomes hold for a simple interest comparison, it doesn't really hold against a compounding interest even with the performance of our t-bills rate say for the last 10 years. Compound interest changes the dynamics. I'd love to discuss the numbers if it stirs up your interest.

I don't think this applies to someone who earns in dollars because even if you travel you need to change your money into local currency to do any transactions. & comparing to inflation someone as to think twice to put cash a side in a dollar account than investing somewhere.

@JessicaOS Good content but you failed to acknowledge the compounding interest part, which I still think makes the T-bill not a bad choice, especially when you have some big funds to lend to the goverment for some time enough. Remember the foreign exchange rate is also NEVER static.

I’m glad I came across your channel. This is the first video I’m watching. I just transferred money last week to invest in a T-Bill for a year. For me personally it is better than me opening an ISA in the U.K. as the interest rate isn’t great and hasn’t been for years. I have purchased a house in Ghana. My plan is to have multiple streams of income. When I’ve left money in my bank in my savings account in Ghana (Barclays or whatever their new name is) they chopped my money.

You’ve made a good point. In America, we are more worrying about the economy in general when it comes to investing. When the economy is flourishing, the interest rate on return tends to be great... but when the economy is in recession, the interest rate on return is likely to be low. I would not mind buying treasury bills in a good economy at all.

I get your analysis but it is quite simplistic. The entry time and exit time with the dollar may or may not be beneficial but T'bill is risk-free and you are certain of the amount you will receive. If your appetite for risk is high then the dollar would be a good option, otherwise stick to T-Bill.

What's better is changing that money into dollars and buying global stable stock like Tesla and Apple, which mostly have one way to go: up. In the same period that Jess described, if you have bought a Tesla or Apple, both splitted into 4-1 and 5-1, the gains would have been massive. Just food for thoughts. We live in a global economy and your money do not need to work where you live but where it can grow

This is such a great video and kudos to you for putting it up. I think your calculation based on simple interest and investing for just a short term of just 91 days or six months will definitely result in a fall in face value of your initial capital in dollar terms. However there is the magic of compound interest (rolling over interest + capital for the next 91 day tenure), thus if you keep this same amount and roll over every 91 day for a period of say 4 to 7 years your results will be greater in both cedi and dollar terms. You can try that out. All in all to get the best out of every investment you must be in it for the long term. Thank you.

Hello from the US! That example calculation was extremely helpful. There are central banks in many countries that are purposefully devaluing their own currency against the dollar right now. All for the sake of keeping exports/imports competitive. There's a dollar shortage and central banks are low on foreign holdings aka US debt. Long story short, the dollar isn't dead by a long shot, it's just being bought on the cheap right now and that's about to change very soon.

Thank you very much Jess for your impressive analysis. I think I've got a theory from your analysis. This is it. If you want to benefit much from a treasury bill, let the exchange rates guide you. Hence when exchange rates are looking good over time there's much gain in treasury bills. And when exchange rates are high over time there's less gain in treasury bill. But whatever you do you are better off buying a Tbill than locking your cash in a bank account.

Hello Jess, great video but I hope you will agree that undertaking a particular investment depends on one's risk appetite and investment objective. Every investment has inherent risk including treasury bills even though it is described as risk free. And one needs to determine the objective for which they want to undertake a particular investment plan. The forex market is highly volatile and it's termed as high risk and in investment the higher the risk the higher the return which may not be the preference for everyone. So the term portfolio diversification. You should not put all your eggs in one basket is what is basically meant by portfolio diversification. So by all means treasury bills is necessary - risk free element and then one can add forex, shares, bonds, business, property etc in order to hedge against risk. My humble opinion please

Two comments: 1) Money held in treasury bill is compounded, vs money held in dollars. If a person buys dollars monthly for five for years, and another buys treasury bills monthly for five years, even if the face value of each monthly investment is the same, the final winner will be treasury bills because of the power of compounding. The gap in investment gains will change over time even if the currency depreciation rate is not able to improve. Herein is the safety of treasury bills for long-run investment. Let's not also ignore the losses from local foreign-currency accounts with all their extra charges. 2) It's irresponsible to advise citizens to invest in dollars which worsens the problem of cedi depreciation for the rest of the country, including poorer persons who don't have access to dollar accounts or banking. Dollars should be used for buying and business, period. Hoarding them as an investment is not the best when the BoG is trying to stabilise the cedi. Rather educate us on other avenues such as investing in crowd-funded business, the stock market or mutual funds which can strengthen the local financial sector and economy. Ideally, anyone who has the chance should create a portfolio that includes low-risk products such as treasury bills which can cushion occasional losses from high-risk/high-interest investments.
@JessicaOS

Point 1 well noted. Point 2 however could've been constructed better. It's funny u call me irresponsible when you've watched government after government do almost nothing to help reduce the amount of imports Ghana does in a year. All cash investments compound so long as you don't withdraw the interest. The only advantage Treasury bills have is that they are free from state taxes but it doesn't make up for the low interest rate. Many online banks offer much higher returns. I just got quoted .1% on treasury bills while Ally bank was paying .5%.

@@JessicaOS But Jess, when you think of T bills as a long term investment I think it is a better alternative to other investments. By long term, I mean you reinvest the principal and the interest rate (therefore utilising the benifit of compound interest). With foreign exchange - you can't compound interest. You have also not taken into account that the government adjust interest rates to make treasury bills attractive. So when you did your calculation interest rate was 14% and it is now 26%.

I think the illustration is not balanced, you have only outlined the risks of investing in TBs, what about the benefits. When the currency of country depreciates, that affects the prices of goods and services because of imports, in the end inflation goes up. To make the TBs attractive - the central banks tend to match the inflation rate or above. So yes, in the short term which you should have said, TB’s attract exchange loses, in the long term they always win or very minimal loses.

Stop right there! You are absolutely wrong. To benefit from T-bills you need to consider over a long period of time. Now with your own figure : Assuming you have 1000 cedis 5years ago its dollar amount will be @ 3.8 will be $263.16 Given the current yearly t-bills rate which is @rd 17% you will have 2,192.45 cedis, divide that by your rate 5.83 you will get $376.71 You would have made 30% interest on dollar basis over 5 years that's averagely 6% yearly and studies show the American banks pay 2-3% per year interest to cater for inflation on customers account, this you are left with 3%ish free cash interest in dollar terms when you invest in t bills. I will advise you get your facts straight before posting this misleading piece.

So, what causes the cedi to depreciate? If we can know specific reasons why that happens, then we can know if it will continue to depreciate or not which will help us over here in the USA to make a smart decision. The value of the dollar could fall, most like in 2021 and beyond. the reason is that the US treasury will be pumping more money into the system to stimulate the economy. This should impact the cedi to rise in value. This is therefore a good time to invest in treasury bills, in my opinion.

Its quite easy to open a dollar account but do not forget that Banks do charge monthly fees for these accounts. Some charge $50 per month($ 600 per annum) and this goes to depreciate your funds further.

Great illustration 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 So Jessy converting your money to dollars will be the best move than even saving your money in cedis without the actually working? Secondly, How about keeping your money in the bank without investing or converting your cedis to dollar and creating a dollar account,which is better please and why ?
@JessicaOS
@JessicaOS 3 жыл бұрын
Point one, would be valid if the cedi continues to depreciate. Point 2. you lose purchasing power if the cedi continues to depreciate and yet just sits in your account. Conclusion, it's not smart at all to just keep your money in savings

@peagama

I disagree with fixed deposits.. (regardless of the rates they offer you).. ... For a starter, go for Government of Ghana bills, notes or bonds ( since the Ghana Fixed Income Market is kinda booming now)... Safer than any fixed deposit with any institution. Or invest in Money Market funds like Republic Unit Trust.... Databank Mutual fund.... Stalib's. don't forget to speak to a financial expert, and do your due diligence on the managed funds before investing.

Aawww... Jessica, Everything was okay upto where you advised that the purchase of dollars may be an alternative to investing in treasury bill. Remember, the cedis keeps depreciating to the dollar as the years go by because of the high demand for dollars in our economy and your advise seems to be adding to the problem than helping solve the problem. It may sound smart to invest in dollars but on the other hand very deadly for our currency and economy as a whole.

Hello there. I've also watched the full video but I didn't hear Jess talk about buying dollars. She only used it for her analysis. Talking of buying dollars, I think that's not a good idea. It will worsen the exchange rate and depreciation of the cedi will be greater. This will happen if a lot of people tend to buy dollars hence increasing the demand of dollars and the price will increase likewise.

Great video Jessice. However if all continue to hold dollars, the cedi will continue to fall or devalue. As ghanaians we need to stop selling in other currencies in ghana or holding dollars for other reasons which contributes to the fall of our currency. While as an individual u may gain from this there is a long term effect on the nation at large . Thats one of the reasons why before you buy another currency at the bank they expect you to have a visa and ticket for travel. I believe there are other ways to invest that does not affect the cedi. I will be glad if you will look into other options and share. If u ask me take this video down. BOG will not be pleased at all🙈. Love your content 😃
