Fun fact, seeing as Hong Kong was to be given to the UK in perpetuity, they were, technically speaking, under no obligation to give it back to the Chinese. However much of Hong Kong's critical infrastructure such as water treatment planets were built in the New Territories, which were under the ninety nine year lease, making any thought of keeping Hong Kong proper and only giving the new territories back rather untenable as the Chinese could simply shut off supplies to the city.

This is seriously the greatest timing in my life! Just arrived in Hong Kong for a short vacation, this video certainly helped with the understanding of Hong Kong and the museum that's located there too!

There’s a great exhibition in the Hong Kong history museum detailing its Neolithic history - there’s loads of artefacts from human settlement around the time of the European Stone Age. It also houses some cool photographs of early british settlement and a full-sized replica of a colonial high street. Nice to see a new style of video. Very much enjoyed watching that.

Hong Kong and Canton were cradles of revolutions (or rebellions) in the early modern China. Would love to see more of that side of the story!

Actually, Portuguese has occupied a part of Hong Kong for a brief period from 1514 to 1522. They only went to Macau because they were defeated by the Ming Dynasty.

I’ve been subscribed for a long time and I am so impressed that there’s a video about my home! The video is quite accurate but however missed out the fundamental issues that caused all these chaos in these days-distrust of the Hong Kong people towards the PRC due to their ancestral roots. Most of the Hong Kong people are descendants of refugees, asylum seekers and capitalists who fled from China after 1949. Many of them had suffered during the early days of the reign of Communist China, where the nightmare of famine, political prosecutions and confiscation of private properties still haunted them.

I noticed, however, that there's a mistake in figures: around 11:40, you are stating that the Second Convention of Peking took place in 1868, which doesn't make sense if we take into account that it's there and then that the 99-year lease was signed (and it was due 1997).

Heads up, there's a slight error at 11:41. The Second Convention of Peking occurred in 1898, not 1868 :)

HK has a few phases, it was only a small dinky place with a few people living before southern Song. After Southern Song, that’s when it’s actually part of Guangzhou. Li Shimin, the founder of Tang, which was before Song, had a few units stationed here but it’s not named a place yet. HK since being recognized and part of guangzhou in Southern Song, just a dinky little fishing harbour until Ming when Europeans started to stop by here on the way to India or Persia. Then in Qing, started a trade route for tea and porcelain. However, with Europe entering the height of their Colonial Era, trade goods here seem like a rip off since all the other goods they got from other places were “a lot cheaper”. So they tried to negotiate with Kangxi and Yongzheng. In Kangxi Era, they tried to gain influence by having many missionaries and giving interesting things like a Western clock to the Emperor. But since China had already an established culture and religion, getting people to understand Western Science and religion was a long stretch and Kangxi was annoyed and didn’t like Westerners pestering him on religion and trade. And his son Yongzheng even closed off trade to the West and tried to burn churches that were building at the time. What hit the nail in the coffin was Qianlong, Yongzheng’s son, who responded to George III by saying we’ve got everything we need we don’t need to change anything to accommodate to your needs. That’s when England decided to set up posts with merchants in Guangzhou and mass produce Opium from the East India Company so that they can really make a profit off of local Chinese. China after Qianlong was struggling massively on corruption and losing money fast. Qianlong’s grandson, Daoguang, has to pick up his dad, Jiaqing, corruption mess and continue the ban on Opium while dens and brothel still on the rise. By then, it’s too little too late, the dumping of boxes of Opium, the bad foreign relations and translation, meant China has to pay debt. So for the first time Daoguang had to not only pay back England, he had to for the first time give a piece of land to England. It was very humiliating. But, at the same time, all of that could’ve been prevented had China been more open minded to learning other nations. For example, Daoguang wasn’t aware that at the time, England wasn’t just a small isle off of Europe, at the time England already took 1/4 of the world’s land mass and put a flag on it. If he had been more aware and had been more willing to learn, none of this would’ve happened. However, for the relations with England, it’s an entire learning opportunity open for them to choose but they didn’t, HK later did though, you know, during the Cold War era.

I have a question. Is the "Yue" that was used to refer to the people along the southern coast of China the same term as is used to describe Vietnam? (Yue nan, 越南 in Chinese). At 4:24, where you mention the fellow who make himself of Nanyue, are the characters for that the same as Vietnam, but flipped? (南越) This character for 'nan' usually indicates "south", as in Nanking, Hunan, etc. Were the people in this region the same people group as those in Vietnam?

Just two small errors: Kowloon and Stonecutters Island were ceded in 1860, not leased, while the New Territories and the other small islands were leased in 1898 for 99 years.

The Baiyue are not just around the locality of Guangdong. The Qin had to fight the Wu and Yue kingdoms which were considered part of Baiyue tribes. Southern China is not clear but can be considered as south of the Huai river at the time (Not the southern part of what China is currently).

Why dont you mention why it was called “The opium wars”? I feel it’s quite relevant to the background of this. I feel you present this as piracy and protectionism alone was the reason for the war. Obviously the Local government was to blame; but I do feel the Brits’ actions leading up to the opium wars should be presented.

As I understand it, the 99 year lease on the New Territory's was intended to be for perpetuity to by the British. The 99 years where seen at the time as good as perpetuity. I am sure that the Chines did not think so however. But is interesting to note as what mindset the British had when they conquered these areas. And yeah. It really was a conquest like is noted in the video. The fancy language they use to support there claim is just that.

I wonder what might have happened if the British transferred Hong Kong to the Republic of China aka Taiwan.

Have in mind that Nanyue (Nam Việt) was where the the Vietnamese Kinh people originally came from. All of that land was theirs before the Chinese pressured then to move south to today’s northern Vietnam.

I know that China and Britain use to have this trade,where China would give Britain tea in Exchange for silver. the British however,ran out of sliver and the country really wanted there tea. (I don't know what century this was but it was a long time ago) So Britain secretly stole the sliver form China and they give it back. Eventually China realise this and some war happened (I don't know about the war) and after it China and Britain agreed on the Hong Kong exchange, basically Britain would keep Hong Kong for I think 100 to 200 years then Britain would give it back to China. That's what I know so far. (I almost forgot about the fact that the British gave Opium to China even though it's not safe,I think the opium was meant to be a drink even though I think it's not safe,I think for some reason the British wanted the Chinese to be addicted to the opium.)
