Mark’s powers were what set Omniman off, because he’d been hoping Mark would never get them. He’d been planning to just live the life he had, up until both of them died. Once a few generations passed, he’d continue his original mission. He was lying to himself, this entire episode. He does truly love Debbie and Mark, so much so that he put his world domination plans on hold for 20 years. But when Mark got his powers, he realized that Mark was half Viltrimite, meaning he would be alive to see him conquer the planet. So, if that was going to be the case, you might as well rip the bandaid off now. Especially since the chances of another Viltrimite coming to check on him, and seeing he’d made no progress, was always a looming threat.

@@thomaswhite5122 Spoilers for Invincible beyond season 1, but Viltrumites are more like if only 50 or so Saiyans existed and they kept that a secret so the universe thought they were a gigantic empire, but really their method of sending a few out to conquer worlds is for one thing only, and that's to find a species with good genetic match to them, like Humans, so that the purity of their DNA mixed with a Human might produce nearly fullbloods. All this to set that planet up as a breeding camp and rebuild their empire back up to full strength and more. Assuming there was never a Freiza to challenge them.

The Viltrumites coming in to check on him wasn't one of the issues, in the comics he told Mark they could rule the planet for centuries before they had to turn it over to the Empire. Whether Mark inherited his Viltrumite powers or not, he would have had to start making progress on his job of conquering the planet long before the Empire would ever even consider checking up on him.

Pretty sure the Martians didn't know about Viltrumites. Cecil said they lived underground and kept to themselves, so it felt like they were probably quite isolated. And the Emperor's response seemed more like bravado to hide that he had no idea what a Viltrumite was, especially with his glance to his fellow with a raised eyebrow, and the other Martian's shrug in response. This season was a trip. Looking forward to season 2.

I do think it's telling when reactors are so against Debbie and Art's feelings for Nolan. Maybe because they are young and haven't been married? Nolan is her husband. They were together for 20 years, they raised a son together and had a pretty amazing life. It isn't easy to just erase 20 years of love. Hell that miniscule amount of time was enough to change Nolan and he grew up in a warlike society for thousands of years and yet Debbie is just supposed to be like, "Yeah, Screw him." No way. For Art this was his best friend for 20 years, especially in the industry they were in it isn't like Nolan had a lot of people outside of family to talk superhero life with. So Art took that role seriously.
@popculturewatch8689
@popculturewatch8689 Жыл бұрын
It has nothing to do with being young. Most rational human beings would expect someone who just watched their spouse call them a pet, kill thousands of people and nearly kill their son would be enough to write them off. This isn't some husband who cheated or flew off the handle once. But, love is often not rational. That's the problem.

This show has balls. The train scene, while incredibly gory, is also absolutely necessary. The scene boils down Nolan's argument to Mark, that humanity is a weak and fragile species that cannot stand to Vitrumite's in body or time. While human lives fade, they stand firm, unmoved. The action is shocking in its violent brutality, but this is precisely what underlies Nolan's views. A brutal outlook tempered in time and blood. If he showed such a lesson to a Vitrimite they might applaud him on his argument, but what Nolan is missing is the emotional attachment that Mark has made with humanity, something that has not been tampered with by an endless lifetime, "the mission", or a brutal ideology. Nolan's emotional attachment is not to humanity, but to his son, and Mark reminding him of this not only saves his own life, but the planet.

Nolan calling Debbie a Pet and that she doesn't matter is actually him trying to talk himself into this aswell. As seen in the Flashback, his time on Earth actually did affect him. If he truly was still 100% indoctrinated by the Viltrum ways, he would've killed Debbie the Moment she found out he murdered the Guardians, because she "didn't matter" anyway as he claimed. Not only that, he even let Art live with the Knowledge, which was another major risk. Granted he threw a lowkey threat at Art, but everything we know about Viltrumites at this point, this was still hella uncharacteristic. And when Nolan flew away, crying, it wasn't because he couldn't decide what to do. At that moment he did decide. It was either serve the Viltrum Empire which would mean to kill his Son, or abandon his Post. And as Allen said, in thousands of years there was never a incident of a Viltrumite abandoning his Mission, not even ONCE. Funny thing is that Omniman/Nolan is "nice" relative to other vitrumites. You can kind of tell he's conflicted about the whole thing but feels he has no choice. He said in episode 1 that it probably would have been better if Mark didn't get his powers... then he could at least wait out Debbie and Mark's death before he took over Earth. But since Mark's powers awakened, Nolan couldn't do that anymore. Every extra year that Mark lived is another one that Mark would become more attached to Earth and humans, so Nolan probably felt he had no more choice. And if he wasn't going to take over Earth, then the other vitrumites would eventually come. omniman is over 1000yrs old completely indoctrinated with his peoples ways. 17yrs with humans aint gonna change it. yet Marks words got to him.

The martian thing was pretty confusing, but basically one of the humans got left behind and taken over by the sequids who then proceeded to conquer the martians. The way I see it, the reason why Nolan waited so long to carrying out his mission of conquering Earth had everying to do with Mark getting his powers. I think he probably would have prefer to wait long enough for both his wife & child to grow old and pass away naturally, but that no longer matted as soon as Mark gained his Viltrumite powers, because he knew Mark would live just as long as him...meaning that there was no longer a point in stalling the inevitable anymore.🤔

I also think it spurred him to action. The Guardians of the Globe couldn't beat him, but a Mark that was more in control of his powers and more battle experienced teamed up with them might have been the difference they needed. What always gets me is that people very critically latch onto the negative things Nolan says, like the "pet" comment, while completely ignoring his every attempt (and is never shown in videos) at being realistic of the situation, constantly showing us that there's two sides to his feelings. He often speaks quite objectively and makes notable disclaimers that let you know he's not some one-note evil villain. He alludes to wanting to wait until Mark and Debbie were gone to do his job (interrupted by Mark getting his powers) and tries to get Mark to see the bigger picture. Now, of course we know Mark wouldn't be okay with this revelation, but as a viewer, we have a lot more information than Mark. It just blows me away that so few see the nuances in his character. Nolan goes from mostly unwavering in his loyalty to being extremely harsh in order to ignore his feelings, to trying to convince himself that what he's doing is right to flat-out abandoning his post. He's not heartless and he's not a simple "bad guy". He's a man who weighing thousands of years of indoctrination against the brief love of a family, facing the existential crisis that everything he's ever believed in could be wrong. EDIT: I get that the negative comments are more shocking and thus garner more attention and feedback, but the other, more subtle characterization that explains those comments exists throughout the series and I guess it just rubs me the wrong way that it's so easily ignored by so many, not necessarily just this react crew. It's clear he loves Debbie, but he also has the knowledge that he'll outlive her by so many lifetimes that she'll eventually fade from memory or be replaced by another. The "pet" comment is rough to us, but if we lived for thousands of years, our perspective might change. That's why trying to adopt the perspective of the person we're judging is so necessary to being rational.
@majinkenobi8157

That bit about the thousands of years is something I don't see many people even acknowledge, it's like if we as humans lived a certain way for 50 years and then spent a day with some nice people who thought a different way to us and expected us to suddenly change everything we believed in in that single day, it's even more impressive that Nolan stopped at all given that timeframe.

Somehow after dozens of times seeing it I against all odds just NOW realized how hard Nolan is projecting when he yells at his son about what will you have after 500 years. Nolan actually knows what 500 years is like. He's probably had a whole handful of wives and kids and even grandkids come and go several times over. This was the first time the person he loved would actually survive until the day he died. His son was going to be there to see the man he decides to be from that moment on. Like Nolan is super fucked up but he also came from the kind of stuck in your ways that centuries of saiyan blooded Superman fascism cements in a mother fucker so him changing even a single inch is several miracles stacked on top of each other for real.

It's still murder, it's just murder in self-defense, generally speaking. Depending on where you live, whether you are on property you own, and whether it is reasonable to assume your life is in imminent danger will all factor into whether self-defence is considered legally justified. It's actually a somewhat complicated area of the law for obvious reasons. In some situations, if you have a reasonable method of escaping the situation (like the house having a back door) or if your life isn't at immediate risk (someone with no weapon vs you with a gun) you absolutely could still be charged with murder. If Nolan were on trial, it would be hard to call any of his actions self-defence because there's no reason for him to believe he's in any real danger from simple bullets.

It was so funny hearing you guys ask about the mummy pretty much every episode. I don’t know if that character comes back later or not, but, in the same episode it appeared, it’s implied that it was either crushed or sealed away by the slab that slammed in front of the tomb. When it comes to not noticing a superhero, or even a celebrity, it’s a real thing. If you aren’t looking for specific features, or person, everyone just kind of blends together or are even ignored unconsciously, especially if the brain isn’t given ample time to analyze and process. Even when you think you recognize someone, you unconsciously doubt and rationalize the situation, just like not being absolutely sure you’re seeing an actual celebrity until they confirm it. Even to this day, there are only a handful of my family members who won’t initially mistake me for my older brother if it’s been a while since we’ve seen each other, and I think that that’s mainly because we grew up so closely throughout the years.

I often do not relate to Sam's reactions and humor, but I was touched that she seemed to be the only one to tear up when Mark said "You, Dad." Cheers, Sam. Also, 37:00 that identity blindness is a real thing. Celebrities aren't recognized 100% of the time by 100% of people that see them, because most people aren't paying attention to them and many people think they look LIKE the celebrity, instead of actually being them.

Finally!
