Have you ever wondered what an invisible bind off is? Or how to do it for K1P1 ribbing? I show you two invisible bind offs in this video - Italian (also known as kitchener) and tubular. I also compare these two bind offs to the standard bind off as well as the standard bo worked in pattern.

Thank you so much for this one- it was exactly what I needed. I’d been struggling, because the tubular bind-off was bulkier than I wanted; and I had waded through videos of Kitchener (the recommended bind-off for the particular project) that just didn’t work for me! Usually I go straight to your videos, but somehow I missed this one. You saved the day, and I’m going to share the info by referring people on my project page on Ravelry to this video. Thank you so much for this one. I’ve tried it out on my v-neck 1x1 rib cast off, and it looks so much neater than simple cast off. Sits flatter too, especially in the V where I could adjust the ‘snugging up’. Well worth the extra time spent, so this one is a new favourite. Your P off K on, K off P on is simply perfect - so easy to get into a rhythm 😍🥰

A very tidy method for ribbing - having been a machine knitter I adopted the "sew off" method (rather than the traditional bind off) back then. This created an edge similar to the cast on edge. I will definitely try this Italian method as it seems a natural extension to what I am doing already and looks great!

Clearest explanation of these two similar but different BO's. I also now understand why some people do the tubular on two needles, but honestly, that seems like an unnecessary complication to me. And seeing that the Italian BO (on one needle) is actually stretchier is helpful!!! Thank you!

Thanks! The book "Cast On, Bind Off' calls this Invisible Ribbed Bind-off (p. 197) but most patterns don't use that term, so this has cleared up a lot for me.

I have to say this is the BEST tutorial, time-efficient and clear! I understood after watching order videos but this one helps save time by doing two stitches at once! Could you please make another one to show the difference btw 4 slipped rows and 2 slipped rows in tubular bind-off as you mentioned? Also mine looks like there is a horizontal line in my tubular bind off. Why is that..??

Nicely done! I’m a beginner, but I found the last bind off row to be very clearly demonstrated. One big question is how would you do the second pass in the round?

Great question. The first pass would be done the same as you see here. The second pass in the round, you would slip the knits and purl the purls, but always bring the yarn forward to purl and back to slip. 🧶

If the purl stitch is first, then you go through the purl as if to knit, leave it on the needle, go through the knit as if to park, leave it on the needle, then go through the purl as if to purl and let if off the needle, go through the next purl as if to knit. Go through the knit as if to knit and let if off the needle, then go through the next knit as if to purl.

@@KS-ew8ml I find it helps to untangle your yarn every so often, and to move the folded over end further up (or down) the tail as I find that when it decides to tangle it usually does it in the same spot. Also, I find that keeping my thumb or finger firmly holding the stitch I'm going to do next helps quite a bit. Many thanks to Suzanne for such a helpful instructive video.

Suzanne, I have a question for you. I want to use the tubular bind off for the bottom of a cardigan and the sleeves. The pattern calls for the body to be knit on 4mm/US6 needles and switch to 2.75mm/US2 for the cuff. I dearly love the look of the tubular bind-off. You very clearly state in your tutorial that you MUST go down 2 sizes or there will too much flare. I’m guessing I should do a test swatch to see how bad it would be? Would the alternative be to stick with Italian bind-off? But you also said you went down 2 sizes for that one, as well. I’m talking about 200 stitches I’ve got to deal with for the body. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

What I would do, is on the very last row work that slip stitch edge with the next stitch. For example, k2tog, work until 2 sts remain ssk. Then do the bind off. You can do this on the RS or WS, the results will be the same. Let me know if this helps.

Hey Suzanne thanks for this video perfect timing cause it calls for tubular bind on bottom ribbing of sweater. My question is I thought you were going to show us at end of video a comparison between 2 passes and 4 passes but you only compared to Italian again but I will recheck that again. The comparison would be nice since I've never done these 2 bo before. I've already knit my last row not knowing about the needle change so Italian is out so tubular it is. I really miss your life shows but I'm sure you are busy with boot camp. How do we get information about what you're doing or to get help? Do we just go to ralvery? Just miss you alot. Thanks for all you do!

Hi Suzanne, I like your video explanations of Italian and tubular bind offs. However if I'm going to bind off the hem of a sweater, I need to b thread a very long yarn to work with.. like 150 inches or more. Wouldn't it be cumbersome to work with such a long yarn on a needle. ? Is there a way of gettin round it.

Hello Suzanne! Do you think the sewn Italian BO (without any set up rows) work well on the button bands? I assume this method will not flare out on the button-less band ? Thank you in advance for your advice. Celeste

Hello Suzanne, thank you for this video, does it matter if I start the bind off on the wrong side of the work? I would like to knit the row in a smaller need but i will be finishing on the wrong side then. I am going to do the Italian bind off.

Not at all, both sides look the same. It is reversible. Fun!
