Let’s do some mending together! These Freddies of Pinewood jeans have been with me since 2015 and geez, they are really starting to wear out! I noticed a rip in the crotch / inner thigh area last summer and have been putting off sewing and mending the tear… until now!
If you have been wondering how to sew ripped pants, this is the video for you! In this video, I go through how to patch a rip or tear in your jeans… and other fabrics! Yes, since I was doing this, I also ended up helping Steven to patch and sew a big hole in his shorts too. XD
Also, let’s all come together and mourn all the butt jokes I didn’t get to make in this video.

Thank you so much!! I still have one of my favorite pairs of jeans from years ago that tore in the crotch like this. Everyone I've shown them to said they couldn't be fixed, but now I have so much confidence that they can! I'm glad I didn't throw them away.

cool to see how you mend it, especially with the shorts where you didn't trim up and close the rip first, like I was taught to do, but my mends often have this dissatisfactory tension or "pull" in the area- I think I've going to try it the way you did it next time.

Oooo yes. I never cut the thread left behind because I feel that they show me how the pants/shorts are supposed to lay when mending - you know the part where I'm pulling while sewing, the threads show me if I am pulling them in the right direction back to their "baseline position" - if that makes sense!! So glad you found this helpful!! x

After reinforcing the opposite side with zigzag, you outlined the rip with a zigzag?

Thanks. I was disappointed that you called it invisible, because it totally isn't. My mend is on the front of the knee shin, so I do need it to be invisible. This provides is something I have done for decades on my jeans and it's fine if it's in the crotch, but again, is NOT invisible.

Thank you for sharing this !! The second part of the video with the shorts is exactly what I will be doing. It was nice to see your tip on how to use fabric instead of an iron on patch.

I love your videos and techniques. I also love that you don't wast time and get right to the point. I have a pair that I tore on the seat just under the pocket. An L shaped tear. I think they got washed and I trimmed what frayed after I washed them so there is a little gap. Will this still be possible?
@gwenheng
@gwenheng 2 жыл бұрын
Aww thank you! Yes, the same concept of applying support/interfacing and then adding reinforcing stitches works for an L-shaped tear too!

Very helpful, also the last "try on" shot was amazing! I would have question, i need to repair sweatpants - so a bit stretchy, would you recomend trying to find patch which is also stretchy or go for more sturdy fabric?
@gwenheng
@gwenheng Жыл бұрын
Hehe thank you! I think that would depend on the fit of the sweatpants, the location of the spot that needs mending.. and the size of the tear? If it's a loose-fitting sweatpants then it probably won't matter too much. If it's a snug fitting pair then stretchy fabrics might be more suitable and you might even want to consider just sewing around the border so the extra fabric you're adding stays stretchy.. 😃

I had the same question! Thanks for asking! I have a pair of slightly stretchy jeans w a rip in the butt like the shorts she mended above. Will be challenging!

😂 and yet I do these mends all the time on jeans. So useful. Instead of doing the reinforcement with a straight stitch I learned to do it with zig zag darning. Which I have actually broke my machine doing by going to fast etc... I think I will try this way.

First time sewer attempting the repair at 6:00. After you pinned the patch in place, did you outline the rip with zigzag stitches? I watched a few more time. Did you reinforce the opposite side of main seem with zigzag stitches first?
@gwenheng
@gwenheng Жыл бұрын
(I had to watch it again myself 🤣) Yes the shorts is made of a slightly stretchy fabric so sewing zigzag stitches on the opposite side has a few goals: (1) sew a side of the reinforcing fabric in place so i can remove the pins when sewing - i wanted to be sure i didn’t stretch the fabric at the wrong spots, (2) extra reinforcement on the other side since the other side will probably get worn down with time too.. Hope this helps! x

Quick question - do the jeans feel comfortable to wear. Just wondering if they feel bulky where they were mended. I love the zig zag technique. I’m definitely going to give that a go. Thank you for the really clear instructions.
@gwenheng
@gwenheng Жыл бұрын
I noticed the jeans being a bit stiff when I first put them on (at the spot where the interfacing is added) but didn't notice it with subsequent wears. Also, my jeans aren't the skinny, skin-hugging type so that's something to bear in mind. The denim patches that I have seen so far aren't too bulky. Hope this technique works out for you!

I'm having trouble sewing over the frayed parts of my pants to do the reinforcing - any recommendations on how to not get the strands trapped in the machine?
@gwenheng
@gwenheng 10 ай бұрын
The reinforcing material (either the interfacing or extra fabric) should prevent from the frayed parts from going into the machine. But if the frayed parts are still in the way, try trimming them down or cut them out completely. :)
