Cheech relocated to Austin to try and jumpstart his career as a chef. Because he was homeless with mental and physical disabilities, he wasn't able to maintain employment. Cheech has homeless in Austin, Texas now for four years.
I honestly could sit and listen to Cheech all day long. He is brilliant and very knowledgeable about homelessness and the social services system. Because of his disability, Cheech is getting Social Security; however, that is not enough to pay for rent. When I asked him about qualifying for housing, he responded that a lot of people are getting housing, but there are still a lot of people that have been homeless for years not getting housed.
During my stay in Austin, I met one man who was outside for 34 years and several others homeless for 20 years and 10 years. In many cities, homeless services are doing better than they ever have but because of the affordable housing crisis, more people are entering into homelessness than they are able to get out of homelessness.
Cheech shared something that is so profound that it blew me away. He went on to forecast how a rich man, a cop, and a minimum wage worker would be treated by other homeless people when they ended up on the streets. Cheech's prophesy I believe is spot on. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
Cheech is very knowledgable on homelessness in Austin. He shares about attending city council meetings and the growing criminalization of homelessness.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here [invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved] to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn't just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don't take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

@You You From my perspective, the system is designed to promote greed, lack of compassion/empathy, lack of trust, self-promotion, and even arguably violence and hate. Yes, you're right everyone is responsible for themselves and they have to make good life choices for themselves but that is isn't the issue with the system. The issue is the negative aforementioned qualities that become promoted in our society. Some people just don't have the thick skin to tolerate the BS of our system. We need to promote compassion and support for our most vulnerable. It feels like we are all scared to care for our left behind because by doing so we risk losing what we have. Its the attitude of feeling like it'll never happen to you until it actually does. Did you still make the right choices then?

You two don't have a clue. This guy is a terrible homeless man! The key to being homeless is not to look homeless. You have to have a cell phone number and a PO box with a street address! He gets a government check! Nobody asks if he's done time. Nobody asks if he's using drugs. People like this have no right reproducing. They just create more homelessness. He looks like hell. And he isn't being honest with himself. He has a victim mentality. We all have our cross to bare. We don't know this guy's history. If he truly has PTSD , he should join the VFW or American Legion. He won't take responsibility for his own situation in life. He's pointing outwards. He should be looking inwards.

There's a high likelihood that, due to my own personal struggles, none of which involve drugs or alcohol, that I will be homeless in the near future, with no means nor the wherewithal to change my circumstances. Over the years, I have taken in people off the streets, let them sleep in my car at night, held regular get togethers, kept food, clothes and blankets on hand (sometimes getting a knock on my window in the middle of the night), let them do laundry and take showers. I got their mail, because you need an address. Phone service. Helped a few in the crew to take classes at the college where I worked. Even got an attorney when a couple of the guys had been physically abused by a local business. They were friends of mine. Like, 15 of them are dead now... maybe 3 are still alive. Still homeless. I've seen how things happen to people, and realized how precarious is my own position in life. "There but for the grace of God go I." I've seen what homelessness can do to people... For me, I'd rather be dead. And I won't go quietly.

Btw; to Cheech, I think I ran into that little girl, a day and half before him. I saw her (long, dark, hair.. doe eyes, terrified, and blubbering-crying..) down on Red River, across from Swan Dive (I shoot music in the area.) She was just sitting on the sidewalk, in her pajama bottoms and long-sleeved tee, crying. I stopped (nobody stopped -- it was weird!) and asked if I could do anything. It was one or two in the morning.. she said, "I don't have anywhere to sleep." That was it. Sadly, for her, I am poor. I cleaned out my bag, of all the money I had, and it was less than $5, I am sure. I really didn't know what else to do for her. Calling cops, for that, is counter to anything reasonable. It was terribly sad. Little girl. Tiny feet, covered in the black of Austin exhaust and human sweat.., and I should have thought to video it.., but no, wasn't the right time or person. She was really out of place, there.

@@Babu-kr3cr You obviously don't understand how things work in real life. I have allowed homeless people to stay with me, three times, and each time, I was threatened with eviction. You know nothing of this girl. I know nothing of her except what I saw. I did what I could, at the time (2 a.m, on a Sunday.) I bet it is more than you have done. If you feel you are the most virtuous, and you have the answers, solve the homeless crisis we so obviously have. I couldn't even get her to my home. A bus pass is good for one person. Buses are not free, in Austin, any more. (I think they ended the ozone action days to stop homeless riding buses all day and night in the heat.)

Great video sad reality. As former homeless I can relate when he said all they need is a roof over his head and some dignity. Mental health sucks it takes a lot of patience and time to help and stabilize the issue. I know because I struggle with it, but after much prayers, education and holistic approach I am overcoming the challenges. I now owe a home and I’m a landlord (low income) to people that were in my situation in the past. Some come out of the place owning their own. All by helping them via coaching, financial advice on how to save, health care, etc. Yes it is a lot of work, but worth it. It is my way of giving back for all my blessings.
