My mum sang this to me when I was recovering from major brain surgery as a kid. “Beautiful girl stay with me” hits different when it’s a plea for your baby daughter to wake up. I cry every time I hear it now ❤️ Edit: thank you to every kind stranger who left a comment. I check back on this thread frequently when life feels like too much. It’s strange how a whole bunch of people I don’t know can make me feel so much warmth in dark times. I hope you’re all doing well and have lots of love in your lives.

Saw this video for the first time when I was in the throes of a 7 year battle with anorexia and bulimia. At that moment I literally broke inside, I felt seen, and it made me finally get help. Now in 2024, someone I love is going through the exact same. I had forgotten all about this video until today, so here I am, tears in my eyes, sending it off to my girl, hoping she knows how much she is loved and supported. I don't know if the band reads these comments but I wanted you to know just how much of an impact this song and video had on me as a 21 year old in 1992, and now as a mom of daughters in 2024. 32 years later, this music still resonates and I am so grateful.. ❤

These boys were geniuses. Geez the subject of this video remains so current nowadays. Music with substance and feelings and sensibility. All of them ingredients which current pop stars lack of. Social commentary in pop music usually seems avant garde because it's uncommon. The video does stick out, but I wouldn't say it's groundbreaking. Visually striking, I remember this on MuchMusic and having a great impression on me.

It's a beautiful song, but I don't think the video quite fits it. The song is clearly about a girl running away from a loveless home, not about unrealistic beauty standards imposed by society.

@@revacohen glad I'm not alone on that one... before I saw the video when the song came out in 92, I was 15. An artist for sure in every way... My idea for a video would have been of a young girl, before he starts singing, with the piano, quick snippet of a young lady, late teens, early 20's. Pony tail, duffle bag or back pack, coat in her arms, jeans, on her way out the door of this home with snippet of some fat old white guy yelling in a chair, yelling in a dark living room, throwing back a beer bottle, puts it down next to a half empty bottle of bourbon, to another snippet of her mom in the kitchen looking down, disheveled, when she looks up, crying, reaching her arm out to the daughter pleading her not to go. The mom has a black eye, looks down, as the girl leaves the home shutting the door behind her, bottle of bourbon, hits the door, breaks and you see her running into the night as the piano ends, scene ends. Just as he begins singing the first words, appropriate with the words it's now morning, bright sun, she wakes up after sleeping in a cornfield. Hears the farmer working near by gets up and runs away before he sees her but he does. Looks worries yells to her but she keeps running looks back, next scene she makes it into the city, possibly Nevada, Las Vegas Strip, looks like maybe she just got off a bus as the sun is setting. Sees a seedy hotel, walks in, inxs is the band playing. She has barely enough crumpled money for a room while guys at the bar are eyeing her she pulls into herself quick goes to her room. The young farmer walks in from the cornfield with his bag, was going to approach her, but before he could she was in her room. Just orders a drink he doesn't touch to be polite and stay there for a while. Back to her in her room trying to sleep. It's loud but she pulls the covers over her ears. Cries while she tries to go to sleep. Next morning, she's got her things about to leave the hotel, the farmer is still there the next morning, buys her coffee. She reluctantly stays awhile.. starts to open up to him. He wants to help her but she kind of pulls away, saying thank you, after having coffee and breakfast with him.. but the bartender looks up and she obviously didn't give him the rest of the money for her night's stay, she leaves. Farmer puts what she owes down on the table & more to cover her bill and his, calms the guy down. He never catches up her. She's walking down the strip. It's afternoon. He's looking for her on the crowded streets. She auditions at a strip job because she's broke. He finds her later while she's dancing. Looks sad watching her slides her tips. They go in the VIP room and just talk. She leaves again, but this time with him walking off into the night. Next morning they wake up in bed. You think they had a one night thing and they're canoodling and a little girl jumps on the bed, they sit up and play with her. She looks like the mom and you realize it's their daughter. As the song ends you see the now grandmom who had the black eye in the beginning, standing by the bedroom door, smiling, cup of coffee in hand looking better next a quick shot of the wedding photos as she smiles and walks away. Song ends with the band members happy and working on the farm 😁

i am not beautiful and i don't understand why Eleanor thinks ugly people are supposed to feel inferior for it. why pretend you were blessed with beauty when you aren't? it makes you look like a dumbass. people who are willing to laugh at themselves and be real are much more attractive. and chocolate smeared around anybody's mouth is revolting. my mother taught me how to eat and i never had that problem.

Great band. Michael was a wonderful vocalist (RIP, my guy). The video is amazing. I hope more girls watch this and realize they need not to conform to any societal standard and are beautiful the way they are.

Lembro dessa música tocar em uma rádio enquanto eu assistia o por do sol de dentro do carro passeando na beira da praia do cassino, aqui no RS. Aquela brisa da beira do mar + o calor que fazia no dia, o marzão ali e o sol indo embora... Aquela nostalgia de fim de tarde. Perfeito.

Yep. 1992 and my wife now of 31yrs was playing hard to get. This tuna came out and I had a 1972 Chevy short bed drag truck that paid my bills and gave me date $. I bought this tape,played it to her at the drive-in. Traded my Gerber knife collection for a diamond ring, now 4 kiddos later, racing pro street, and $ in the bank we still hit drive-ins and play this tuna.

Na verdade a música foi feita para a filha do Andrew, tecladista do INXS, ela era uma bebê. O Clipe sim é que foi feito para uma campanha contra a anorexia, não a música/letra.

Black, White, Spanish, fat, skinny, short, tall,,rich, poor, lesbian, straight, ALL women are beautiful! No woman is SUPERIOR over another one, let's stop hating and being jealous of one another. I had to leave a racist club on FB who simply couldn't believe that a black, beautiful woman like me loved INXS and Michael, so I am making my own club on FB. This song is a celebration of ALL women.

Yes it is and it's beautiful as are you.....This song and video is *so* relevant, it could've been made yesterday and be spot on the issue of shaming women and that says something. When it came out, *no one* was really talking about it...good for Michael and INXS...I heard Michael really loved women,and not in a superficial way...Peace
