Notes (random): Atomic Radii- As you go down a group, the atom adds more energy levels, therefore increasing the atomic radius. According to Coulomb’s law, distance and force of attraction are inversely related. If you increase the distance of the valence electrons to the nucleus, the pull the nucleus has on the valence electrons is reduced. The valence electrons are also repelled by the shielding electrons. Ionic Radii- Cations have less electrons, therefore less electron shells. This makes them significantly smaller than the parent ion. As the size of charge increases, the size of the atom decreases. Anions are larger than the parent atom because there are more electrons. This increases the repulsion, therefore increasing the ionic radius. As you go down a group, the number of electron shells increases, therefore the size of the ion increases. For isoelectronic ions, the ion with the higher amount of protons has the lower ionic radius. As you increase the number of protons in a radius, the FOA between the nucleus and the electrons increases. This pulls the electrons closer together, reducing the size of the atom. Isoelectronic- same number of protons and same electron configurations Electronegativity: -The ability of an atom to attract an electron towards itself -Florine is the most electronegative element (4.0). -Electronegativity increases as you go up a group and towards the right of a period. -Non-metals are more electronegative than metals (higher electronegativities) -Ionization Energy: The ability to remove an electron from a atom. Metals tend to have a lower ionization energy compared to non-metals since they like to loose electrons (become cations). On the other hand, non-metals like to gain electrons (become anions) so it’s harder to take one away. -ionization energy increases as you travel left to right. The electrons stay on the same energy level, however, more protons are being added. This increases the effective nuclear charge, which means the nucleus would have a harder pull on each individual electron. This means more energy would be required to remove a single electron. -As you go down a group, the ionization energy decreases because the distance between the valence electrons and the nucleus is increased. Electron Affinity (kj)- The energy change that occurs after a neutral atom gains an electron
