I have ALS and will lose my ability to talk. This feature is really cool. It will help me still communicate with my family in a voice that sounds like mine.

As a person with a stutter, who can’t always speak well, I love this.

The ad for this feature from Apple”the lost voice” is pretty touching. I think the cool thing about this is that they record your voice says the technology improves. They still have the original recordings and can resynthesized to remove some of the roboticness. One of the things you have to do is make sure you don’t read it like a robot and try to use a natural tone and pace. People tend to sound weird when they read and so the voice sounds weird.

Imagine your girlfriend calls and your phone picks up the call then break up with your girlfriend 💀

My Father’s best friend was diagnosed with ALS and lost his ability to speak. Normally, you can purchase a machine that allows you to bank your voice, essentially creating an AI replica, but they cost upwards of $5,000. With this new feature, people who are diagnosed with ALS and other illnesses that cause you to lose your voice can bank their voice for virtually free, and I think that’s great. Unfortunately, my Dad’s friend passed last year, but i imagine he would’ve loved to see this. Edit: Should mention that these machines aren’t the only solution, as there are many services that can give you the same experience, however most of them cost a monthly fee, likely over $20 per month or more if you want to register multiple voices. Despite that, i still think the apple voice bank is great, especially because it’s free, and you don’t have to sign up for any sort of service which can be quite the hassle.

*”It clearly is a little robotic"* The resulting personal voice sounds a lot like the standard version of voices in Accessibility / Live Speech. The Enhanced versions sound better, but at a cost of increased file sizes. Maybe in the future we’ll be given the option of creating an Enhanced version of our voices.

I remember doing this when it first came out and it was gruelling to respond to all the text prompts for a full 15 minutes

See it's still in beta and it still sounds pretty alright. I think it still has a fair bit more room to improve but it will get the job done that it intends to do.

I imagine in the future you probably can make a loved one or family member your personal assistant voice. Just think how great that would be to be able to keep on your phones if something were to happen to them.

Google is already working on this. Not only have they have nearly perfected voice recognition but now AI searches and reads back to you results. It’s nuts.

They got our ID, fingerprints, face recognition, eye recognition, now our voices being recorded, our data. We are not consumers we are test subjects lol.

This is brilliant for my Autistic friend who has trouble thinking fast enough to speak an answer but can type really fast. He can read the prompts because he wouldn't have to think about choosing his words.

I feel like this could be used in a couple of cool ways: If imsg’s you send to others were announced with your voice on someone else’s phone - with airpods in siri will announce texts “Marques says ‘hahaha That’s a funny meme’” If iphones could announce texts using personal voice - that would be so cool. Another cool feature would be if you could assign your own voice - or someone else’s voice to announce directions and other things. Like having your daughter tell you to take the next high way exit while you’re on your way to her dance recital would be gold. or as if you were reading directions to yourself if you’re a lonely person like me 😢 Would still be pretty funny tho

Try the D-script overdub voice. It’s REALLY impressive. Takes half an hour to train, needs processing overnight, but well worth the results. Crazy tech

Reminds me of a feature my garmin nüvi navigation had like 10 years ago, you would recort certain words and phrases, and you could then use your own voice to guide you haha

I hate it. I hope they can make it so you can tweak how it sounds. I don’t really care if it sounds accurate, but more so that it sounds how I want it to
