Donnie Yen has remarkable fluidity to his movements, but Zhang Jin has what I can best describe as a “calculated brutality”. He has a presence that is indomitable.

Supposedly Cheung Tin-chi was taught or had a slightly different approach or interpretation of the martial art. Yip man focused mainly on defence and defensive strikes/take downs. Cheung Tin-chi was an more offensive branch of the martial art. I cant remember if it was mentioned that they learned from different masters who had different interpretations of the martial art or maybe Cheung Tin-chi adapted it to be more offensive on his own but its in the 3rd movie anyway when they first meet and find out that they share the same progenitor to their martial arts. Every martial art will have its more defensive styles and offensive styles. tai-chi, tai-chi chuan, Shotokan, Kyokushin etc etc.

That's because Ip Man's Wing Chun was focused on more defensive techniques like it should be. Zhang's was focused on the offensive side of it

Wow! Just wow! I never get tired of this fight. Ip Man was timing his missed punches and exactly at 7:45 he “felt” an opening: His opponent right rib cage. At 7:46 he broke the first rib and at 7:47 he broke 2 more ribs. All that in a matter of seconds. Now that’s a skilled fighter. Savage! Beautifully choreographed 👍🏽

Besides all of what you said, what makes this fight so great is because both Cheung and Ip are masters of Wing Chun albeit different versions of it. Cheung Tin-Chi uses a more offensive-based style of Wing Chun while Ip Man uses a more defensive style of Wing Chun. If you observe closely, Cheung Tin-Chi is constantly on the attack while Ip Man is constantly defending. Cheung Tin-Chi is Ip Man’s true equal.

Right. Everybody knows that the bare hand is the most dangerous part of a man carrying a knife. BTW: That's the right course of escalation here: 1) Long weapon, 2) shorter weapon - and then no weapons at all😂... [if only we could recommend *that* to the warmongers in the Kremlin, the Knesset and the Hamas, we might be able to calm the f'k down]...

This would be the very best fight scene in the series if not for Ip getting poked in the eye and then matrix dodging that straight blast while blind. They did so much other shit before that and that's the one thing that gets him. He didn't even get cut with those knives.😂😂😂

This fight really reminds me of Anakin Skywalker vs. Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith. Tin-Chi is the Anakin of the fight since his Wing Chun is optimizes offense much like Anakin’s use of the Form V/Djem So form in lightsaber combat. Conversely Ip Man here is the Obi-Wan since his style of Wing Chun greatly utilizes defense just like Obi-Wan’s use of Form III/Soresu in lightsaber combat. Both Ip and Tin-Chi are without a doubt great warriors of their art. And both made full use of their styles. If they were one person, they would be the ultimate Wing Chun warrior. Both styles compliment each other extremely well even though they were ultimately different in principle. Even though one won out over the other, there’s no denying that Cheung Tin-Chi is Ip Man’s true equal. General Miura, Twister, among others that fought Ip Man, even Geddes could not measure up fully to the same way Tin-Chi did. Mostly because everyone else used a different style against Ip. But Tin-Chi is Ip’s true equal because they both practice Wing Chun even though Tin-Chi uses a different version of the art.

I get that in Chinese culture it's about using things from your life to fight (Chef's knives), but those knives seem incredibly inefficient for actual self defense. No length, too fat to be used for stabbing or penetration, etc

Those knives are crafted as weapons and not for the kitchen. They are one type of popular weapon set with Wing Chun and I believe popular for that era as well. Chinese do not believe reach is all superior. It depends on the environment. While lacking reach, those knives are very heavy and sturdy and can cause great damage. Slashing and stabbing are effective with those and they are also designed to be used in pairs.

Wing Chun, some useful techniques such as lop-sau and bong-sau blocks or even blocking and attacking at same time with both arms however I am not gonna pretend like all the experts in hand to hand combat here in the comments how Chinese martial arts is hyper exageratted. Sure you will get strong practicing gong-fu but if it were truly an elite fighting style surely China would send out their best fighters to decimate world martial arts in tournaments as a statement of power. In my honest opinion as a practioner is all styles have strengths and weaknesses and for me a fusion of American boxing, Muy Thai kick boxing and Kyokushin Karate is the best form of combat. Maybe if one could live to a thousand years like in times past Gong-fu would be more useful as it takes a lifetime to master it's secrets. I prefer more practical arts for practical application.

A lenda tinha um mestre e esse era o IP Man conhecido com o estilo que enfrentava múltiplos oponentes... Devido a época ou genética ou tempos de dificuldade... Enfim, ele era uma Lenda mas não tinham câmeras ou registros pra filmar... E os poucos vídeos de Bruce Lee disponíveis vemos apenas um deslumbre do que realmente era capaz de fazer.

A lot of fighters would like to find someone who can beat them. Silat in Indonesia and Malaysia also like this. We will find someone to sparring without no one knows to keep it secret. Kung Fu's master, thousand years ago came to Indonesia to find the master of Silat. Even Bruce Lee came to Indonesia to fight with the master of Silat. In the movie, we just know Bruce Lee fights with Chuck Norris. But in real life, he came to all martial arts masters. U can only read it in history if u find it. All this remains a secret for a long time.. its a tradition..

Tapi INTENSITY dan KUANTITAS perasaan seperti bocah, tidak sakit tidak ada kecewa tidak ada amarah. NIHIL. Jangan remehkan orang Indonesia.
