Behind ever great man there lies a teacher, and this was certainly true of Bruce Lee, who claimed as his mentor a martial arts expert named Ip Man (1893-1972). A genius of Wushu (or the Chinese martial arts school), Ip Man (Donnie Yen) grew up in a China nearly ripped to pieces by racial hatred, nationalistic strife and warfare. He rose like a phoenix above these ashes, however, courtesy of his participation in matches against various Wushu masters and kung-fun warriors - ultimately training martial arts icons such as Bruce Lee. This biopic from director Wilson Yip dramatizes Ip's life story.

5:27 in the end, even tho Ip Man refused to be defeated by opression, he changed nothing and China was still under Japanese boot. Helplessness of that situation is something I can sympathise with, but hopefully will never understand.

You are correct, Japanese that time believes that none should surrender, and must fight honourably to the death. Even in the past, Samurais have such beliefs, they would commit seppukku if they bring dishonour by surrendering or failing. The general never surrender which he served his duty honourably to the end.

I like how this final scene isn’t necessarily the greatest fight but extremely symbolic. Ip Man feels useless/defeated at the site of his town’s destruction and this fight was supposed to be another notch in the Japanese army’s belt as a rigged loss for Ip but instead he brutalizes the general and like the black belts again defies Japan. He’s fighting a whole county and defending martial arts principle here more than Miura himself.

Japanese fighters can accept losing, it's always japanese judges that find issue with that. That's what I learned from watching Sumo. Oh, but if you think this movie shows Japanese at their worst, I'm afraid you're sorely mistaken. There were tons of worse things they did during that war.
