iPad 5th Generation VCC Main Short - No Power - How To Find A Short Thermal Cam - Injecting Voltage

Finding a short can be a little tricky sometimes, but in this video, I'll walk you through the whole process of detecting a short & injecting voltage to find it.
We use a Seek Compact Pro + our Macro Lens to find it.

Custom Thermal Cam Stand: (Coming Soon)
First step is to plug in the USB charger & observe what does the USB Charging current show. A working device will show about 1A or more
Then disassemble & disconnect the battery & check USB charging again.
Run a Tristar Test to see if it shows a Tristar fail

Then probe the caps around PMIC and see if you find a diode mode reading of 0.000V. If so, you have a short.
Then inject 4.3V/2.5A into VCC Main & use the thermal camera to see what heats up. It is usually a shorted capacitor that will light up in the thermal camera.
In most cases, you can just remove it. In my video, it was a very large capacitor, so I replaced it from a donor board.
Then test USB Charging again & see if it boots up.

I hadn’t seen this method, just the method of soldering a wire to a point on the line and then injecting voltage. When you explained that wherever you inject the voltage it’s going to go to the shorter component since it’s the easiest path to ground really helped things click better. Thank you

A perfect short won't make heat though, I would have also mentioned that.

@@VCCBoardRepairs A perfect short circuit will pass a lot of current but since their is no voltage drop it will not get hot.

I'm not sure what you're referring to. Anytime I've dealt with a short to ground, there is always heat generated through the shorted component. In 99.99% of cases people will deal with, this is what they'll see. I'm not going to comment on the random or oddball 0.01% chance of some scenario where something doesn't heat up with a short present

@@VCCBoardRepairs the same exact info is in the Rossmann repair manual if you have studied it. Well it does happen from time to time. But I would say active shorts are more common than shorts that don’t cause any heat cause you are right most shorts do produce heat.
