The iPhone 12 lineup can shoot Dolby Vision HDR video (in 4K 60 nonetheless). It's the only camera (let alone phone) that can do this. While shooting and editing Dolby Vision footage on your iPhone is fairly straightforward, how do you edit it and share it in HDR? This is all so new that there are a lot of unanswered questions out there that I try to answer in this video, such as:

Correct me if I’m wrong but on the iPhone 12, the Dolby HDR in 4K only registers up to 24 and 30 fps not 60. FYI. In any case it is quite amazing how different the color and light is with the HDR.

Great video. Are the lenses you buy from third party companies equivalent to the same mm as of a "normal" lens? (for example, is the 16mm the same as a 16mm of a normal lens)

When I open hdr videos from the photo app, I see the videos brightness and colours are adjusted automatically once I open. Is this due to Dolby vision? If I import them to iMovie it becomes the original colour. If I send them to other devices, it goes back to original colour as well. Is the enhanced lighting and colour only viewable from the photo app on phone and is there any way to save a copy in the automatically enhanced lighting?

What the currently status for uploading HDR VIDEO for social media like Instagram and Facebook is it better to turn off hdr if we record for thise platform ? And if someone watch on older device is it gonna be over exposed or they just gonna see sdr version ?

Please could you provide us with some sample video files straight out of the camera. I really want to run some tests on the footage, better understand the HLG thing that Apple has done. Also Davinci Resolve has supported Dolby Vision workflow even without a licence since 2018, It doesn't allow you to do trimming (without license) that's it.

I'm still lost, I did all the steps you suggested, imported into Imovie and then used iMovie to upload to KZfaq, KZfaq says the video is in HDR but when I open it either on my HDR monitor or LG OLED TV it never registers it as HDR and so it looks washed out. On my PC it does show "HDR" on the video settings but the picture is still completely washed out. I'm at a loss as to what I'm doing wrong.

How do I grab a frame from a Dolby Vision video? I tried it on my iPhone 12 Pro Max, and on 1 that had 4 Pro Max. Both stock functionality and 3rd party apps are not able to create an image that has the HDR of Dolby Vision. The best is similar to that image we see before the Dolby Vision kicks in.

Why does the HDR Dolby Vission (high efficiency) format takes less space if it's supposed to be the best filming mode, compared to most compatible mode which takes almost double the the space..? You can export the file and open on LG C9, the only tv that supports hlg dolby vision.

Ideally wait for new pro. Performance wise I think current pro and air are similar. Pro has more ram. But pro has also other great features like 120hz and way better speakers.

Help, could you do a video that explains the big problem so many of us are having with using Dolby vision on our iPhone 12s? Here’s the confusion, and there are several points of confusion: 1. If we film in Dolby, edit it properly in FCPX, export it as a master file, and upload the master to KZfaq, have not we just lost the Dolby quality since KZfaq probably converts it to HDR10? 2. If we want to film in HDR and not Dolby, how do we do that in settings on the iPhone 12 Pro Max since shutting off HDR (the Dolby option?) puts you back in SDR? 3. What if I want to shoot in HDR, 1080p, 30 fps, but not Dolby? If I shut off Dolby, doesn’t that put me in the dreaded SDR? Help please.

Apple did something clever with their flavor of Dolby Vision. They used the recently profiled Dolby Vision 8.4 standard. This marries an HEVC container (the 8 in 8.4) and provides Dolby Vision cross-compatibility with Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) HDR (the .4 in 8.4). This is the why so much quirkiness is going on. Dolby Vision, primarily a Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) flavor of HDR - just like HDR10, is ‘not supposed to be HLG.’ When we move around files with 8.4 metadata, it should be expected display devices and platforms don’t yet know what to do with it. They ‘know it’s HDR’ and ‘expect’ scene-referenced PQ metadata, but instead they get 8.4 metadata carrying its British-Japanese cousin: HLG. Heck, the Dolby Vision white paper on this just came out on 19 November 2019. I think it’s genius really. When all is said and done, HLG will give Apple backwards compatibility in a forward-leaning Dolby Vision wrapper. Brilliant.

This really clear things up. Some content creators here on KZfaq just got the new iPhone and are using it for their videos, only to have people complaining that they can’t see their videos now or that their videos look completely over-exposed. Many are turning the HDR feature off now.

From what I was reading, your OLED won’t playback the iPhone Dolby Vision footage. It’s a newer version of Dolby Vision. Curious to know if it plays back properly on your TV....

Yes. Why it’s kind of pointless to brag about you’re the only one seeing it unless someone else with that display watches it. Kind of like the ps5 it’s 8k 4K whatever gaming but people are jumping on It for that but they have TVs from 2010 so it’s pointless.

After watching early 2020 Qualcomm tech summit I learned that the snapdragon 865 technically was the first chipset to support recording in dolby vision HDR video both 4k 30 and 60fps. But this has yet to be implemented into any android device unaware of. But then we have iphone with a chip and camera sensor that can record dolby vision HDR 30/60FPS. interesting stuff

Actually this video is 2160p, which means it is 4K resolution. Yr iPhone X shows 1080p because this is yr phone display resolution. My Sony Xperia 1II shows 2160p in the picture quality section.

I mean, the difference is really just down to the larger sensor... it *is* larger so technically you'll get better overall shots but the gains aren't going to be HUGE in most circumstances and for most people... otherwise the HDR is the HDR..

on my iPhone xs max i installed an app called "4K HDR Video Recorder" And that let me shoot in HDR10 and i know it works as I'm getting hdr logo in the photos app and after sending the clip to my windows pc. i feel apple could of used normal HDR10 for older iPhones if it really wanted too but they ave not done so. even other apps like FilmicPro have not added any HDR10 recording option. tho i guess its all software

Good video I have a question I’m on the fence about upgrading to iPhone mini for price, size and similar specs to even pro models amd the iPhone 12 pro max because of camera features but question do you think the sensor shift, 87 more light, Lidar, 47 larger sensor going to really make great diff between pro max and other models I am for some reason got see it to believe it just seems to good to be true plus if go with mini it’s 500 less than the pro max Huge price gap I Don t know my mind saying one thing and my heart saying don’t let it persuade you that you are getting a Red or other professional like camera will it be nice I believe but I think it want be justified for pro max price tag could be wrong just something wanted share thanks!

Well I think it depends on what you like. But yeah in general that 500 dollars will get you better stainless steel frame,bigger oled,better camera,few camera features you won’t find on non pro models,also better thermal performance since better heat dissipation due to larger surface area of the pro max ,way better battery life .

@@gurnihal12 I conflicted I like pro max specs I just got see it I n action the 87 more light, larger sensor, Lidar etc are cool specs to have but I’m curious how they actually perform amd of you record or shoot something with it how it compares to just iPhone 12 I’m going out on a limb to say if you put them in side by side comparison and have average Joe pick which camera has better image I don’t think they could really tell the difference I’m sorry if I’m wrong that’s fine if it has some magic the other phones don’t have cool! But I don’t think so yeah it might give better image but my question is how much 10% or 80% that’s the factor I want to know 80 % is significant diff but10% nah I’m good thank you

KZfaq Share has disappeared from iMovie. Now there's no way to upload HDR. If I save the file and upload it using the KZfaq App it strips the HDR. Everyone is having this issue. Maybe mention it in a video.

I don’t know why Apple called it “Dolby Vision HDR”, it’s a bit confusing especially if you have a TV that supports both DV and HDR, is either or but not both in the same sentence. DV is 12-bit of color (68.7 billion colors) and videos look much better than HDR (HDR10 & HDR10+) which is 10-bit color (1.07 billion colors). Either way, great video, thanks!

Dolby vision is a hdr format like hdr10
