4x tougher. Toughness is a very specific engineering term. In layman term, it's shatter resistance. But it doesn't mean scratch resistance.

General engineering principles would say if you want something to be less brittle and prone to cracking, make the material softer and more forgiving. It seems this is what Apple have done with the iPhone 12. They compromised screens that were hard to scratch, for screens that don’t crack when dropped. I was personally very disappointed with how easily the 12’s scratched

As an Engineer I would like to point out that using a material with higher toughness of course will give you a material that can plastically deform to a greater threshold, thus being less brittle and less prone to fracturing. However, this comes at a cost, because materials with higher toughness typically have lower hardness. Lower hardness = less scratch resistant. Not sure how different than regular glass this new "ceramic" apple is using is though. P.s. Using sand paper to test for scratch resistance is a very very bad idea. Sandpaper, is made of the hardest materials out there, almost nothing can resist a scratch from sandpaper. In fact, most of the time your phone gets scratched in your pocket or bag is because of grit/sand particles in your pocket that rub against the phone. And sandpaper is usually made from way harder materials that regular sand..

@@amitverma-sr2ik well if its glass, it just wont be scratch resistant against sandpaper. You need something with a score of 8-9 on the Mohs' Hardness scale to not get scratched by sandpaper, and glass doesnt reach that high.

After viewing a few drop tests for iphone 12 , it appears the design of the iphone, having the glass under the frame, helps to protect the glass. The drops were damaging the frame and not touching the glass...which is a good thing but the front glass is easy to scratch so will still need a screen protector.

I got the iPhone 12 black. Very pleased with the durability. Very strong ceramic shield on the glass and very fast download speeds and stream speeds also. But one negative thing about the phone is the rear glass is very susceptible to scratches. I haven’t even dropped nor done anything to the phone yet. Just left it in my bag,(btw no car keys or sharp metal objects are inside the bag) and the rear glass already has a small scratch. Still the best phone to me I’ve ever seen yet.

As much as I appreciate these type of videos and have been watching them for years.. in no way can I understand why tossing a phone around in a bag with coins and keys simulates two weeks of wear and tear. Especially with the cost of phones these days. The thing is safe in a case on a flat surface when it's out of my pocket, or it's in my pocket by itself and not up against my full set of keys. Not me. I’ve never liked phone cases/screen protectors. But cracking the back of the phone isn’t really that big of deal. You can’t feel the cracks and I don’t look at the back of my phone, so it doesn’t effect the functionality at all. However, after multiple drops on the back, pieces of glass will probably start falling out, exposing the phone’s internals, and that’s when it becomes a problem. That’s why i wish they’d put the ceramic shield on the back of the phone too. Either that or find a way to make wireless charging work through an all aluminum back. I know Apple could find a way to do that if they really wanted to.

What sandpaper did you use? The material kind of matters. Sandpaper can be composed of a wide variety of stones from low hardnesses like 5 to high hardness like 9+ Edit: at 5:14 you can see it’s aluminium oxide, which has a harness of 9! That’s not a good analog for concrete which is 3-7.

I don't like using phone cases with iPhones because I love the smooth feel of the iPhone so much, so I always get a apple watch with it. That way it's always in my pocket with a just a packet of tissues. I therefore only need to take it out when I'm seated and holding it with two hands. That way when I inevitably drop it I'll be inside and it will be from a relatively low height.

I think the problem with these drop tests is that in actual situations you probably won‘t drop the phone like that. Everytime I dropped a phone there was a little more force involved, like when you trip your phone might fall forward with a little more force than the „test fall“ which falls to the ground without any force; or if it falls from the bed, or you try to grab it when it falls out of your hand, then there is a lot more force. I will not rely on these drop tests too much and will use a back cover, or at least a dbrand skin or something like that, although I absolutely hate to use phones with covers.

Interesting. I wonder why they didn't put the same glass on the back? The front 6' and 9' drop test reveled no cracks or scratches which is great, but there wasn't any scratches due to the the fact it didn't drop exactly face down. The only time the front glass hit the pavement was after it bounced from it being hit on the corner edge. Still, the front performed great. Shame the back isn't of the same material. I would still use a case just to protect the corners. Mahalo!

There's a trade off from having such an impressive shatter resistance and that is scratches. You can't have both so it's better to have scratches on your screen rather than having it shatter. Best way to prevent scratches would be a quality screen protector/case

So part of me thinks that one of those bumpers that only go around the outside of that frame that might be perfect because I watched a couple of drop test already and it really does look like a frame gets been switched of course obviously it's that's going to happen but these phones are looking pretty damn strong if you ask me I have the note 20 Ultra and it's supposed to be real strong but after watching a couple of drop test I think it is good better than maybe a different phone but I don't think it's as good as he's from that being said I'm going to Maine my note and get one of these has a backup

Honestly, I wish they just used concrete instead of the sandpaper. Al2O3 on the sandpaper is way harder than any component of concrete so concrete would be a more realistic test. They really need a more controlled way to do the drop tests rather than dropped by hand. Also, I was dying for a corner drop at the end!
