@@FVBmovies Before you go to Apple store for repair you can easily backup all of your data by hooking the phone up to a computer if you don't have daily iCloud backup enabled already. Also, Apple probably have internal tools to pair new camera modules to logic board of iPhone 12. You would still need to wipe your phone before Apple accept it for repair (which data lose can be easily mitigated as mentioned above), but the bill you received will be very different than what you made it out to be.

There isnt. This iphone has a 0 repairability score because all the components are keyed to work with that exact iphone. Apple has been fighting "right to repair"... and the biggest change from previous iphone 11 to 12 is if you replace anything you will get the faceID/battery/Camera/TrueTone display errors. Pretty much makes the phone useless.

Everything is paired with the motherboard. If you replace anything, there appears to be software level "hardware errors". Things stop working, but some bugs in the software allows them to work in certain areas. E.G, a camera replacement causes the camera to "freeze" and "not work". Except in panorama mode, it works in the little view-finder, but not in the main window. And also if you swap to video mode, swap the camera between zoom and no zoom, and back to picture mode.

its great that u can open it and disconnect some of the components and all, but u can't replace the camera since apple requires u to use their cofig tool (which they don't provide to the public) to make a new camera work with it, the same deal with the screen and the battery (I'm not 100% sure about these 2), plus almost all (if not all) of the chips on there can't be bought for replacement. U can't repair this phone even if u get in since apple locks all of that in software. this is an exercise of futility. Im sure u can open if to clean up water dmg or something like that, but if anything inside is broken, good luck finding parts for any of it.

At least the screen and battery work fine though, just like the 11 Pro and earlier. However another factor that may compromise repairability is that the camera modules, Face ID sensors, display and battery are all paired to the phone’s logic board so if the battery is changed by a third party it will disable the battery health menu and also may throttle down the performance of the phone as if it’s an old battery! That’s however unless the third party repair shop can pair the new battery to the phone’s logic board! :)

Hey iFixit, repairability score is 0. Please watch Hugh Jeffreys 's video. Removing parts from the iPhone and replacing them with Apple's own parts will incur Camera issues, faceID disabled issues, TrueTone screen issues, battery issue notification. Apple has keyed each part to each individual iPhone now in a way to combat Right to repair. This means not even 3rd parties can repair any components even with legit Apple parts. Only way to repair is via Apple now.

The teardowns really show the need to balance features in these compact devices. We need to be more vocal about what we look for as consumers from our phones, and I feel the 5g features are a real misstep in terms of usability for most of us.

These repairability scores should be composed of physical accessability (6) and actual repairability (0 due to paired camera, battery, screen, etc). And the result will be a mere 1: you can replace the gasket.

What could be the reason for cameras not being replaceable? Is there anything that from a technical/security standpoint can justify them being paired with the phone, such as the need for camera firmware with individual calibration parameters being loaded when power is switched on, or some biometrical parameters related to phone login via face-id being stored in a secure vault-part of the camera chips like for a fingerprint sensor? Generally just curious since I from time to time try to follow the newest anti-repair inventions that emanate from Apple..

I think ifixit is just not an apple fan because before I was like what ifixit say about the iPhone teardown before I start telling people prices and they were right because before models were not worth it to be an independent phone repairman. but this 12 seems so much easier to repair I'm ok with the screen needing more heat now you can get inside the phone the screws we have been dealing with for years we should have that screwdriver for apple screws. I rather have more screws then adhesive and everything pops out without adhesive that's a super plus 9 out of 10 for me
