MagSafe actually draws up to 30w from the power adapter and using the 20w adapter does limit it. However not by much since the thermal limits kick in. The ESR MagSafe with cryoboost is actually the coolest method of charging I’ve found. Even cooler than any wired option (aside from maybe sub 12w)

Macworld did a similar test, and they were able to charge the iPhone 15 Pro via Magsafe with the Apple 20W adapter to 50% 45 mins, 80% in 1:30hrs and full in 1:55hrs. His took over FOUR hours to fully charge. So seems there can be a lot of variability (Macworld did several tests and got relatively consistent results). They also compared MagSafe with Qi2 and found them to be similar in charging performance.

My 30 watt MacBook Air charging block paired with the cable that was in the 15 Pro Max box seem to charge my phone from 20 to 80 percent in a little over 30 minutes. It seems super fast compared to a XR or even my Note 20 Ultra. I'm probably gonna end up timing the next charge cycle out of sheer curiosity. I might eventually grab the 35 watt 2 port, just to more conveniently charge two devices at once when I have to. Thanks for the video brotherman.

Have the Note 20 Ultra as well and the 35 watt MacBook dual output charger. The 15P definitely chargers really fast with the MacBook charger. But don't worry about it destroying your battery guys, the 15P is only capable of pulling 9v and 3A during charging using USB C PD, that's 27 Watts max. So regardless of the fact that you use a 100 watt or 30 watt brick, the iPhone will only charge at 27 Watts max.😊 I've decided to just use my N20U's 25 watt charger.

Great comparison, I appreciate the complete look of time/temperature/and wattage. Thanks! Oh, btw, regarding magsafe overnight, as I typically have my phone connected around 7-8 hours overnight, what do u think about using a lower wattage power adapter, say the apple 12w? As I don't need it to be ready in 4h, maybe the slower 12w would be better for temps....

one thing to note is that it is a brand new 3nm chip , and irecall my 14 PM could go as high as 29 watts instead of 27 watts on the 13 PM , since I got on day one the 15 PM , I've noticed it charges faster on an anker nano 65 watts. usually the phone if dead is near 60% after 35 min. and it take 1h35 to 1h45 to change it completely. ( I leave Optimized charging on but it's not yet really on ) ... needs to learn my routine , it can take weeks.... but I pretty sure this 3nm chip is extremely powerful , and some had overheating issues with some apps until 17.0.3 so my guess is that Apple will slowly increase the speed of the charge in the 17.2 ou 17.3 beta , like they did with the 14 PM from 27 to 29 watts last year... Apple still needs ( and mostly 3rd party devs ) to learn how to deal with this new chip and optimize it . I'm sure we will noticed imrprovements. I'm happy that they can charge up to 50% in less than 30 min. that's the most important, but we wish it could be even faster for sure.

It most definitely is. Heat and fast charging are the two most destructive things for a battery. I upgrade every year and the 5 watt charger would only drop 1-3% over a year. Ever since I started using the 20 watt adapter, I lose up to 10% over a year, and that is with optimized charging turned on.

Since the iPhone 15 pro charges at a max of 27 watts you should put lower wattage chargers than 20w to see a bigger difference. Plus iPhones pull more watts from the charger when it’s in use. My iPhone SE2 normally draws about 10W when I’m not using it but running benchmarks can get it to pull 20W

I have few chargers at home. 5w of course. A 10w comes with my 2 gen iPad. A 12w adaptor from my 2nd gen iPad Pro. A 20w from my new iPad (10 gen). And a 35w dual output charging comes with my new MacBook Air. I have an iPhone 13 and a 14 Plus. 5w charge very slow of course. The 10w & 12w both charge quite a bit faster, cutting almost 1/3 time to charge to full, especially the 12w I noticed. Now with 20w it cut the time in half. I then try the 35w, it seems to charging even faster but not by much compare with the 20w. So I believe there is just so much maximum limit of charge current going into the phones. 20w is the ultimate charger.

Since the iP 14 series, Apple has started using batteries produced by another company in China, leading to a decline in battery quality compared to the iP 13 series and earlier. The batteries tend to degrade faster, and the overall battery life is significantly shorter than in previous generations. Apple has opted for some components of lower quality to reduce costs and maximize profits.

I've been thinking and I wonder if there's a correlation between higher watt chargers and iPhone battery degradation? Especially with the iPhone 14 Pro battery capacity drainage controversy my guess would be that chargers that pump high velocities of charge into the battery in a shorter time frame might contribute to the batteries heating up quicker and killing overall capacity
@helloyes2288
@helloyes2288 9 ай бұрын
Could just as easily be that the difference in wattage has only a slight impact and that the battery degrades at more or less the same rate for the entire time you're charging it, meaning wireless charging or low watt chargers would be the worst.
@iAmThatOneDuck
@iAmThatOneDuck 9 ай бұрын
While there certainly might be a correlation, I think the indirect correlation might be more important: the faster the charger/charging, the more tempted someone's going to be to either drain their battery a lot and quick charge it full right before heading out to a day of usage, which is very heavy on a phone battery I'd expect, since these perform and charge the most effective and efficient between 40 and 80 (hence why charging is halted at 80% on a lot of phones these days). Going from lets say 20 to 100 to 20 every 24 hours, I can't imagine it not being heavy on a battery.

iPhone throttles when it gets hot while charging. My iPhone 14pm charges from 20% to 80% in just 30mins on a 29W actual charging speed. (phone with active fan cooling). If you place a fan on them, the 35W charger will finish 1st

it will not finish first, 30 watt charger, 35 watt charger, 100 watt charger, it doesnt matter since the iphone can only charge max 27 watt, even the IP13 pro max. I dont think its temperature controlled, a battery dont get hot from 27 watt charging. My Anker power bank with 100 Watt charging has it but i doubt you need it with only 27 watt. The chip in the iphonetells the charging speed and the peak is only reached at early stages from the charging. When your Iphone is cold and you plug in your charger at 70% battery it wont charge with 27Watt, has nothing to do with temperature but with the % of the battery. With the 20 watt charger it will be slower but you only need your 29 Watt charger for maximun results, dont need a 35 Watt charger ! I think the fastest time from 0-80% is like 45 minutes as far as i remember my review i did, so yes your time of 30 minutes is normal, you charged with about 26-27 watt peak.

@@danbarb9728 The charging throttles early if it gets hot specially if room temp is > 25deg and the phone case on. You need to get a wattmeter yourself to confirm. We all know that charging trickles down after 90% of the battery charge. Your aftermarket charger will also throttle down if it gets hot, so a 35W charger will not hurt. Unless you live in an igloo

@@janlester the thing is when your iphone is cold and it has like 60% put it in the 30 watt charger and i bet it wont charge with 27watts. I tested it with a 100w charger with same results, 26 watts isnt enough to make it hot. Yes i have the best usb testers, one is 100 Euro and the USB-C one is a bit cheaper, i think it was 70 euro. Your theorie of temperature related charging can not be right because most of the people getting the same charging times, the Iphone 13 pro max and ip 15 pro max can reach a full charge at 1:46, with full charge i mean completely stopping charging. It reaches 100% 15 minutes earlier.

@@danbarb9728 Bro it's not a theory. Your iPhone will literally notify that it stops the charging when overheating. Google HT201678, it says it will "slow" or "stop" the charging when hot. my iPhone 14PM slows the charging when it's hot, so might as well be the case on these iPhone 15 video. Yes from 0% to 100%, the >= 20W chargers might all finish nearly the same time because of battery charging behavior, but this guy shows percentage on every stage of the charging which shows little difference. clearly there is some thermal throttling happening here because we know that peak charging is 27W. If he place the phones on fan cooling the charging behavior will be different. 27W charging will clearly get to the 80% first, when it slowly fills up to a 100%, that's when a 20W charging will close the gap. The 35W will finish first on every "state" of charging if thermal throttling isn't happening because of 27W peak capability

Everything over 20w won't change speed a lot even 100w or higher. Phones are protected to not pass anything over 20w . It's good thing bit just anoying if you have to charge phone while you rush to go somewhere and your phone is on low %

its wrong, since the iphone can max charge with 27 watts and you will not get that with a 20 watt charger, simple as that. However this will not give you much of an advantage since the iphone steps down in charging speed pretty fast. I guess maybe 10 minutes advantage in the end.

i think you make something wrong here, with the Iphone pro 13, 14 and 15 you just need a USB-C PD charger with 30Watt, you dont need more since the Iphone can max. charge with 26-27 Watts at its peak which will of course step down. That leads to a charging time from 1 hour and 30 minutes from 1-100% and 16 minutes more until the iphone completely stops the charging because after reaching 100% its still charging a bit. However it makes no sense to charge to 100% because the last 20% takes so long, dont know what apple did that. I doubt the 20 watt charger is as fast as the 27 watts from 0-80%, its like impossible. You are using your USB tester in a bad way, putting it between two cables, why? You need USB-C tester and put it directly in your USB-C Charger and the apple cable directly behind.
