iPhone 15 Pro vs Pro Mirrorless Camera.. Cinematic Mode Ready for Prime Time?

iPhone 15 Pro Cinema Mode is a LITTLE better than before, but is it good enough to go up against a mirrorless camera?
This video compares iPhone 15 Pro to a Pro Camera, the Sony a7siii.
I go through several examples comparing the shadow depth of field of a mirrorless camera to the new iPhone 15 in cinema mode. Of course the iPhone is just faking it, but it does a pretty convincing job now! It does well enough that I would argue talking head youtube channels could get away with just using this phone, as long as you've got good enough lighting conditions.
Unfortunately, iPhone 15 Pro doesnt let you use the 3x lens in cinema mode, and thats kind of a bummer. Even using the 2x from the main lens causes the effect to start to fall apart, especially when compared directly to a sony camera.
But in general - I think it's ready!

Try adjusting the fake aperture value in Cinematic mode to see how it tames the masking issue.

Awesome video - I've been looking for someone going more in-depth with the iPhone 15 Pro as a studio cam. Would be great though to see how it could look when shot in LOG and graded since that really seems to get rid of the terrible over sharpening. I know it will not be (as) blurry without the fake cinema effect. But it will at least get rid of halo effect and other artifacts.

Yeah, the video through log and graded technically looks WAY better. BUT! And especially in a place like my warehouse, where the background is very very UNcurated. The mess takes over everything and it’s just a busy distracting view. If you had a really nice looking room/office/setting that you’re shooting in, that would by far be the way to go. But good idea! I’ll make a video about it:)

Tiene buena pinta, gracias por el aporte, yo tengo un canal dedicado a vr y quería sustituir mi vieja canon 60d con un 50 mm 1.8 por el iphone 15 Pro normal, mi idea es emular el 50 mm de la canon ,con la ventaja que la cámara no se pare cada 30 minutos y todo lo que aporta de más.Una duda, la salida hdmi del iphone 15 pro, puede ser limpia sin datos en la app oficial o tengo que utilizar apps externas como blackmagic que tienen un modo de salida limpio a monitor, pero no sé si soporta el modo cine en esta app de terceros., muchas gracias por el video buen aporte.

On the native camera app, there is no way to output a clean hdmi signal. I just downloaded the black magic app, and I don’t see a cinema mode choice in there. I wonder if there’s another app, like filmic or camera + that can do it.

It's OK but in india more people or just say content creaters choose iPhone to vlogs , livestream ,and many more because at 1 serten price we get all benefits of using iPhone And thank you for making video on sony zv e10 leses so that I can make my decision clear ❤❤

My 13 Pro lets you use the 3x lens in cinematic, one of the reasons I don't want to get the 15. Hoping they bring back cinematic to the telephoto lens for the 16 Pro.

Im pretty bummed they took that sway from the long lens.. It makes no sense, and I could ALMOST match a pro camera with the 13 on telephoto and now not so much in the wide lens. Strange move, Apple.

the very bad thing about iPhones is "if you want the biggest camera quality out of them, you will not able to see if you're in frame" rear cameras problem.

Yeah, and this USBC port helps in that you can easily hook up a monitor, but that's a whole thing to set up and it means you have to be sitting still.

The thing that reveals the most that these are iPhone shots is the fake depth of field effect. But otherwise, iPhone 15 video looks great if you turn off the cinematic mode and shoot in ProRes LOG. Recently I saw a video comparing iPhone with Arri Alexa and I was surprised how close it is! Just that fake blurry background still looks quite awkward so better not to use it.

I totally agree. You just have to be ready to see EVERYTHING in the room behind you as clear as you see yourself. So as long as you shoot in a carefully curated space that looks nice behind you, I’d say that’s the way to go. Although man does ProRes eat up drive space super fast..

@@NicholasJamesJohnson Yes, but you can record in h.265 in LOG, which looks virtually the same as ProRes but the size is much smaller.
