The amazing Judo master, Kashiwazaki Katsuhiko, 8th dan and world-champion, is renown worldwide as a newaza (ground grappling) genius. Here he shows an ingenious defense against one of the highest percentage scoring techniques of all time in Judo: seoi-nage. After the defense he teaches a follow-up counter in newaza: the less known Koshi-jime (hip choke), which, in BJJ circles is knwon as Relógio (the clock choke).

This is a spectacular counter for seoi-nage, especially the last 20 seconds that lead to newaza counterstrike from a drop seoi. Sensei Kashiwasaki is one of my most esteemed and respected masters of grappling -- his newaza game is unparalleled amongst many Judokas.

Let's move this discussion to the right path. It may or may not be legal, all depending on "timing". All ippon-seioi is a crossing of grips. You're allowed to grab the legs in two scenarios: If the opponent crosses his grips and as a follow-up to a throw attempt (either yours or from the opponent). All that was banished was a direct attack to the legs. It can still be used as a counter. So it will fall to interpretation because IMHO it's a crossed grip and a counter situation, ergo legal.

This technique was demonstrated many decades ago by Kyuzo Mifune during the randori segment of the film The Essence of Judo (it's about 58 minute into the video, against the opponent called Kusanagi.)

***** I have this video too! But Mifune didn't show the newaza combination in that specific scene. But it is amazing how the techniques from the greatest master of Judo is still relevant today! Thank you for this great comment!!!

loudenvier Indeed, Mifune's techniques are timeless! The Essence of Judo is on KZfaq and should be viewed by all serious students of the martial arts. I have yet to see a judoka duplicate Mifune's acrobatic defense to the hane-goshi at the 57 minute mark. The best part was that he was supposed to be 73 years old at the time. Such agility! And thank you for the great upload! Kashiwazaki sensei is an inspiring figure. When he recently brought his students over to compete in Canada, I had no idea that he would be there to lead the training. When I saw him, I remembered him from videos like this one, and my jaw dropped. "Do you know who that is?" (Unfortunately, few of the young students had a clue.) It would have been cool to see him do some light randori, but we'll get to remember him by the nice piece of calligraphy that he donated to the club.

***** I'm a really big fan of Kashiwazaki sensei. I own three books authored by him from the Judo Master Class Techniques series: Tomoe-nage, Oasekomi and Shimewaza. All of them are amazing. Although I'm a Judo black belt I also hold a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (which is my focus right now) and his newaza techniques helped me a lot both in rolling (randori) and competition in BJJ! They are effective even against high level BJJers.

Mifunes demonstration is nice to look at, but not very developed. Of course it is impressive regarding the time and his age. But nowadays judo is on a higher level of perfection.
@loudenvier
@loudenvier 7 жыл бұрын
Thomas Judo Current judo is not at a higher level of perfection, in fact technique is a lot less developed in favor of athleticism. People compensate lack of technique with strength, stamina, power and speed. Don't get me wrong, this is a way to win, but it is not a way to perfect technique. Some throws today wouldn't even be scored in the past as not having enough kuzushi or an imperfect kake. I don't have illusions: current judoka would defeat many of the past (at least in tachiwaza) simply because they are incredible athletes and judo, in the past, was not about creating the ultimate competitor.

Wszystkie możliwości kontrataku uke wynikają z podstawowego błędu tori - atakującego na prostych nogach, reszta to drobiazgi.

thanks for the upload. I bet koga could still dummy somebody if they tried this move but most people don't have standing seoi in their repertoire, looks like an effective counter for drop seoi. Kashiwazaki is a legend. Peace .. EO

@droman30 Unfortunately no! I've downloaded it from I believe Vimeo, or even youtube itself. I was never able to find the original video on the web to post the link on JudoForum, then I've re-uploaded it again for everyone to see... Sometimes I regret not downloading some video on youtube only to find a few months later that the video is not available anymore... Now I'm downloading every video I like!!!

Hi Felipe, this was true up until about 12 months ago when the IJF further progressed the rules to include no gripping below the belt during tachi waza.

@loudenvier That's funny you say that because I do the exact same thing. If I find a good video I download it for my own records in the event it gets pulled off of youtube or one of the other sites.

I believe you should start thinking before writing about what you don't have a clue. Take a look at your sexual harassment technique being taught at the Kodokan Instructional Tapes in video watch?v=QWdv1E9vg3o (just search for this text on the search bar in case you don't know), specially in 0:36 where they highlight the "grabbing". Also watch?v=lO5OMVH7e-I (1:21 and 1:28) to see Henk Grol use it very effectively and legal in the highest level of competition.

wtf - what video are you watching??? There is no nut grabbing here, one of the techniques is te-guruma which is grabbing deep through the legs and allowed in traditional but not IJF judo. The other technique isn't a strike either, but probably not legal based on the current interpretation of the "no gripping below the belt" rule. I can't believe you pressed "enter" on that comment ...
@FelipeMachadoRJ
@FelipeMachadoRJ 10 жыл бұрын
You should go back to your sensei (if you have one and if he really knows Judo) and show him this video and your comments. You're dead wrong. There's no striking at all, and what you call groin grab is a classical throw called sukui-nage (in the west people call it te-guruma). It has been prohibited in current competition as a first throw attempt to prevent wrestlers from winning, but it is perfectly legal if the opponent crosses the grips or as a followup attack/defense.

@FelipeMachadoRJ 10 жыл бұрын
You don't have a clue about Judo, and is seeing what you want to see. At 1:28 Kashiwazaki is even with the hands open to avoid hurting uke. If a perfectly legal training position is a case of sexual harassment on your mind I really think you should stop doing Judo or BJJ or any grappling sport because you will find yourself in trouble or cause trouble to other people.
@FelipeMachadoRJ
@FelipeMachadoRJ 10 жыл бұрын
Sometimes a perfectly legal te-guruma will left tori breathless on the mat because of the pressure on his groins. You don't have a clue about Judo and even less about the judicial system. Maybe in your mind when you're rolling with a female and try to apply a choke and your arm touches her breast then it is sexual harassment? Your assumptions border the ridicule. I urge you to find a experienced sensei or BJJ master to try to put your mind straight, but you sound like a keyboard warrior to me...
@FelipeMachadoRJ
@FelipeMachadoRJ 10 жыл бұрын
You're are just plain wrong. It seems you don't have much experience on the mat and are making things up based on flawed assumptions. And you are a very impolite person, not really behaving like as judoka should. Are you implying a 8th degree judo black belt, one of the greatest newaza players of all time, and on of the most amazing sensei currently active is teaching prohibited techniques to low grade judokas? If you had more experience you would know that this was classical sukui-nage posture
