Go for the IPS, belive me bro, you wont regret. I got the IPS one and I couldn't be happier. I have another ASUS Monitor as a 2nd Monitor (1080p 144hz) but it's a TN. And the difference in image quality is night and day. Also, the IPS one is much more pleasant to look at. The TN makes your eyes kinda tired after some hours, th IPS feels always so "light" for the eyes. Just belive me. The responce is basically not noticable between the two. MAYBE when you're a PRO player and play in big Arenas in Kora, MAYBE then you gonna choose another one. But even then. This thing is extremley fast. I love everything about this IPS monitor.

Currently trying the PG278QR and Acer XB271HU side by side. While the IPS makes for a slightly more immersive experience with slightly better color reproduction, especially the blacks, it also feels noticeably more sluggish than the TN. You'll here loads of people claiming that there is no difference but I'd say that it's down to the games you play. If you mainly play singleplayer games, or more casual multiplayer ones, I'd get the IPS. If you're like me however, playing mainly online, fast paced FPS and somewhat competitive games: CS, R6 Siege, Overwatch, even Battlefield depending on your play-style, I found myself being relatively more bothered by the sluggishness and blur while using the IPS, more than I appreciated its improved color reproduction, making me gravitate towards the TN.

+Nolan Thomas The Asus PG279Q is officially rated at 4ms G2G. But unless you have superman eyes it is unnoticeable during normal gaming. The technology built in to this IPS screen makes it irrelevant. The advantages far outweigh any G2G loss and this screen will make you re-think why you ever used TN in the first place. Here's an excellent review which explores in detail G2G measurement on this screen - www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/asus_rog_swift_pg279q.htm

You've answered all my IPS vs. TN questions at high refresh rates ... I know what to get now, thanks. For anyone else on the fence, I own a Samsung 144Hz TN monitor and if you sit lower in your chair or the monitor isn't at eye-level it causes anything from color distortion to not being able to see your game because it's too dark. I will not be purchasing another TN for myself.

I wasn't in the market for a new monitor, and loved my Acer Predator XB241YU but after watching some videos and researching IPS, I ended up getting a Gigabyte M27Q, which spec-wise is nearly identical, slightly better response time, 5hz faster, 3 inches bigger, but most notably, it's an IPS display, which OMG it looks so much nicer, whites are brighter, blacks are darker, colours pop more, and it just looks more realistic and isn't so washed out. I recommend IPS displays. In saying that IPS display don't have perfect viewing angles like people say, but it's better for sure. I'm a gamer and it's amazing especially on Fantasy, Sci-Fi or just generally vibrant games, but will look better on anything.

I just want to throw in advice to anyone that wants to buy a TN because they think they won't care about the angle since you have to sit in front of the screen anyway. I thought this also but I quickly realized that I don't always sit just in front of the screen. I might slouch or lean back sometimes even sit a little more left or a little more right and you can visually see the difference in the picture quality when you are not dead center with your monitor. Not to mention if you want to show someone something on your computer they also wont see it the same way you are unless they sit in your chair. I now have an IPS and and I'm much happier with it because I don't have to worry about how I position myself in front of my monitor.

Having a good quality TN monitor can actually help with this though, my Dell S2417dg I believe the model number is, has really good angles for a TN display and has everything else I need, plus for me personally, I hate backlight bleed, so, yeah, I think each person is a bit different in some respects, to each their own though.

I used an IPS 21.5" monitor for 2 years without knowing what IPS or TN meant. It recently broke and I have to use my mom's TN monitor while I get a new one. The difference is obscene. IPS has fantastic colors that look good at a much greater angle, great for viewing pictures, videos or gaming. TN looks washed out and cheap. If your video card can't run games at more than 60fps anyway I recommend getting a 60 Hz IPS panel over a higher Hz TN.

You need too see the difference i guess to realise how wrong you are. the amount of colors shown doesn't have anything to do with how strong they are or brightness and contrast. When your monitor is using 6bit and/or needs calibration, it will create banding on gradients. to cover up those gradients, dithering is used which can appear as noise in between supported colors. You might have to look close and sometimes at an angle to see the dithering. an 8 or 10bit monitor support more colors so they will have smoother gradients and less to no dithering needed to display that perfectly smooth cradient. A monitor with a greater gamut running colors outside the sRGB space will benefit greatly from a higher bit depth panel. since that will otherwise make banding in gradients more pronounced on a 6bit panel. While the graphics card may be set to send 16million colors to the monitor, it doesn't mean the monitor can display it. Just because the sun is shining bright in the sky doesn't mean it can shine through a tree. Thats why shadows exist.

Just like IPS panels, there are several different levels of quality on TN panels. I have an IPS dell monitor and a 144hz asus TN monitor and to be honest the colors are actually better on this TN panel, thats not to say there aren't IPS panels out there that are better, but just saying just because its IPS doesn't automatically mean its better.

@CBUCKish
@CBUCKish 7 жыл бұрын
I Agree, it's purely opinion, not what is better. The reason I went with the PG278Q is not because of price. It supports 3D and I have the 3D Vision Kit. Also I found out from my own tests that Increasing the refresh rate increases response time, therefore creating more ghosting(I hate ghosting, it's a terrible distraction, TN is the best way to stay away from it). Because Good TN Panels naturally have a 1MS response time, they can handle higher refresh rates better without creating as much ghosting. Problem with these monitors though, specifically is the bezel puts pressure on the screen causing the majority of the light bleed. There are ways to fix it. But I won't say as I don't want to be held responsible for anything lol.

+Lars Willems I find a lot of people using this argument. Kinda reminds me of the Apple vs Microsoft argument. At first they will own a 300 dollar garbage Windows laptop, and then they will buy a 2000 dollar Mac, and say things like "ugh, I could never go back to that shitty Microsoft stuff". While if you were to spend 2000 dollar on a Microsoft Laptop, well, things wouldn't be so bad now would they. Same goes with this IPS vs TN, I believe IPS has great advantages and potential, but people are constantly comparing their old, maybe even cheap TN to their brand new IPS. Not a fair comparison I would say. The technologies are, as it stands, pretty comparable, just look at this video.

great review! there was just one thing I wish you had touched on more, you really didn't talk about whether or not the 1ms pixel response on the TN had noticeably less motion blur than the 4 or 5ms on the IPS panel, I would also be very interested to know how much of a difference there was at high and low refresh rates. . I see this review is from 2016 but I would still be interested to here your thoughts on my above questions if it is still something you remember. thx

A lot of us spend a whole lot of time in front of a PC. Some people don't mind spending this kind of money on their TV's, but I rarely watch TV, so to me it makes sense to spend the money on a good monitor. I'm all IPS on this one because I'd like to use it for other things than gaming such as Photoshop and Lightroom. The 9Q is probably going to be my new monitor. It's time for an upgrade ;)

@BizzMRK
@BizzMRK 8 жыл бұрын
Well, generally speaking IPS usually is alot better than TN, but that is mainly due to most "gaming" TN monitors using 6bit instead of 8bit panels as this one and the IPS version is using. The main difference is the slightly better contrast and viewing angles on the IPS comming at the cost of IPS glow.
@Kuraskvids
@Kuraskvids 8 жыл бұрын
ThePrussianGamer True , I can see that being useful for other people. Not saying its not nice , it is , but I simply can't justify paying as much as 100$ more simply for IPS especially for people like me who won't be moving around while looking at their monitor.

I just bought the Dell S2716DG for around $500. It uses the same panel as the TN monitor in this video, but Dell seems to have less QC issues and it's also cheaper. Whatever, the panel is just perfect. No backlight bleeding at all and the colors look fine. The IPS Asus is like $300 more expensive and has exactly the same features. What a joke. Don't get that thing if you mostly play games and watch KZfaq.

You must be blind, or, you're watching this video on a shitty TN panel so you can't see the difference. I'm watching on a good IPS, and i can clearly see the colours on the TN panel in this video are absolutely terrible compared to the IPS.

I have both an IPS and TN monitors and I always end up going back to IPS because it looks better and the input is barely noticeable between the two even when playing Counter-Strike, H1Z1 or Battlefield, IPS is still fine for gaming as long as it's not higher than 5ms. TN colors doesn't look right even after some calibration. VA is also a decent panel, it has come a long ways, it used to suck ass but now it's rivaling IPS.
@Afura33
@Afura33 3 жыл бұрын
Old post, but you are right. I would like to love IPS more though if it hadn't so often so much black light bleeding. I agree on the VA, VA nowadays are pretty good and my favorite panel. The color shifting in TN can be awful and the bigger the screen is the more it gets annoying. I think for small screens TN is alright, but if you go higher in inches than 24" then the TN issues get more obvious.

For playing games its really a matter of what you play. For someone like me--I prefer an IPS because I like the aesthetics of the game more than attention to details in response time. If I am enjoying a game for what it is, the 4ms and input lag is nowhere to be seen. Now if you're an Esports enthusiast that craves better reaction times...then sure, go for a higher Hz TN panel. If you are on the fence for what you want, think about the games you play and categorize them as you see fit to your personal preferences. I like modded Minecraft with shaders...that leans towards IPS. I also like Destiny...that probably leans more towards TN, but I enjoy the look of the game and game experience with friends more than I value that millisecond difference---thus I choose IPS.

no, but IPS it 10x worse... I'm not talking about contrast or black either, but the actual viewing angle. TN goes dark, while IPS goes hazy. But IPS also has glow in dark scenes from front on.
@dennisjungbauer4467
@dennisjungbauer4467 7 жыл бұрын
Kerenton Yeah, but in return IPS has far better viewing angles rest of the time and no negativ-effect. That's more relevant and much better than the other way around.. Not to mention the other advantages of IPS. And no, IPS doesn't have glow from the front by itself - that depends on the panel/the individual monitor, not the technology.

I had the PG279Q, it got broken so I bought a PG278Q, and I eventually returned the 278Q as going from the vivid colours on the IPS to the washed out TN was too much of a distraction. They're both good monitors, but once you have the colours of IPS its like going back to 60hz from 144hz.

I've always hated the image quality of TN panels, but that one looked pretty decent. It's been my experience that you need to boost the brightness quite a bit to see the full potential of IPS. Not sure if it would have done the comparison any justice to have set both monitors to optimal brightness instead of the same, but just a thought I had while watching.

Don't get confused, IPS panels are for Graphic Designers, TN pannels are for gamers. If you make money as an artist go for IPS, because you won't be spending money, you are investing money. If you just play video games go for the cheaper TN.

Well done . You listed every positive that i like about my Dell U3014 ( AH-IPS Panel ) and its few negatives. I never regretted paying the premium for it as for me a audio video enthusiast I am very picky when it comes to colors and accuracy. When playing games i want the best picture possible with in my budget. To me the LG AH-IPS panel in my Dell is just gorgeous to behold when it has a detailed and proper calibration. Besides the slight light bleed at the bottoms corners i love it and it performs A + . Great informative video my friend , well done.

To be completely honest, it's a bit misleading review 2 panels by simply using out of the box settings. You can control the red/blue/green balance to reduce the pink whites. I have a TN and IPS LG in front of me, dual monitor setup, I can actually get nicer grey whites on the TN monitor compared to the IPS monitor at lower contrast. The IPS makes very bright and dynamic colors, but is very eye tiring and I prefer softer colors for everyday use. Having a low backlight with average contrast seems to work best for me, and panels vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, Ive had some TNs look better than IPS.

ASUS makes the MG279Q which I think is the best value monitor on the market. It's a 1440p at 144Hz IPS panel with a 4ms (pretty good for IPS) GTG response time. I purchased mine from Newegg for less than $500 on sale and it's the best display I've ever used. I think the best part of a WQHD 144Hz monitor is that it creates a performance bracket that is quite a bit more attainable for the average PC gamer, and gives the best of both worlds overall. 4K is great, and my PC is more than capable of 4K at or right above 60FPS. However, at 1440p I still get a great picture, but can run game well above 60FPS. It's not always necessary, but it really is smooth.
