Thank you so much for uploading this! I am watching from Michigan USA. I am learning how to to write episode scripts, and have the Poldark script book to study. This interview was immensely helpful. I would love to hear more on Horsfield's process. All the best...

It's funny that she said this story is Ross's journey...After watching the series in two days, I really came away with - that it was Demelza's extrodinary journey. It was not only how she bloomed into the beautiful rose, but who her heart touched, engulfed, and transformed along the way.

Interesting stuff to listen to. You can absolutely see what their vision for the show was. Indeed, it is hard to reconcile historical accuracy, contemporary outlook and faithfulness to the source material. But we got a nice package that's trying to balance between them all. That should be recognised.

Excellent cast from stars to character actors to those beautiful children. However, to ask Debbie, who has never adapted a book to screen, to take on such a voluminous piece of work by the brilliant Winston Graham is beyond me. I watched because of the actors. Once I read the books, I found the adaptation underwhelming.

I love how great the novels have been adapted. The scripts are very much intense and every emotion has been captured. However, I believe that Demelza's character is too feisty to having gone quite for months after heard of Ross and Elizabeth encounter at the church. Or that she granted remission to Ross without his demonstration of profound remorse. Yet we may think she's only a child (10 years younger than he is), who is dazzled by a nobleman, who often puts her down, by the way, feeding her insecurity. And also minding that in XVIII c. women didn't count as there was no parity gender whatsoever. But, specially because this is a superb work of adaptation of the characters to our times, like Demelza being more than a mere housewife, Ross parenting responsibilities (specially when Julia dies), rapist Ross not being such, ... we women expected (still expect) some update to XXI on Captain Poldark manners: not only vain words from Captain Poldark to redeem Demelza's love, trust and admiration but a true display of sorrowful, acknowledging and plea forgiveness for putting Elizabeth first and letting the idea (ideal) of her coming in between their marriage for so many years. At the end of the day, Demelza's love and affair with Hugh A. was not an eye for an eye but aroused because of dark deception replaced bright admiration at Demelza's heart. So she's not only to blame. That is at least what any XXI c. woman would expect from her husband. Otherwise, we may turn to see Demelza's character as an emotional abused wife, with nowhere to run to.

You women complaining want some ridiculous perfect person as Ross--it won't happen and I pray it doesn't. He's REAL. He has his demons and yes, that affects his relationship with Demelza which, let me remind you people, he married on a WHIM after having sex with her one night. Demelza is the one who, barely knowing her master and being infatuated, decided to go along with it. I'm not saying that Ross couldn't or shouldn't do better, but if you want some romantic wish fulfillment, then go read a romance book (I'm a woman 'cause I know that'll get tossed around).

She missed the mark on the heroine of this SAGA, she didn't do her heroine JUSTICE, DEMELZA with the connections she had made during her growth with Ross could have severed her relationship with Ross after he went to Trenwith and resolved his marriage, the backhand coupled with no communication until her plan was completed then communication through Mr. Pasco only. That is a classy, quite, death and Ross to care for Demelza and their children until further notice, if changes Mr.Pesco is the go between. Debbie didn't do JUSTICE to Demelza at all,for her to think this is a good marriage is to say lying, cheating, screwing and taking your family money behind your wife's back, call her a scullery maid, emotional and holding sex until you want it, Debbie, get help, DEMELZA should have left Ross sooner,it is quite clear he does not and never did love her,but his weak disgusting, selfish ass didn't have the decency to tell her or he didn't want to lose such a valuable, trustworthy angel, either way he will Never be anything but a lowlife scumbag in my book and any woman who is lucid.

Ernestine Anderson First let me say that I enjoyed the interview. It helped me see where Horsfield was coming from in some of the episodes. I would have been a destitute wife with my child. Since I am not in the story, I have to see this thru Demelza’s eyes. The only thing Demelza knows about love/marriage is what Ross has Taught her. She knows that the Bible says she should love her parents (a different kind of love). She knows when she is angry etc. Ross on the other hand has been in society (getting away with wrongdoing including sex). Having said that, I think he loved Demelza even before he admitted this to himself (book and t v). Therefore he would have been even more miserable if he had some how managed to marry Elizabeth. He admitted to Demelza that she was human (humans are not perfect we all know that). Even Hugh A told her he wanted a woman that was human. Elizabeth was as close to a robot as the genteel women of that time. Please don’t jump on me, I am an American. Who knows? I m allowed to make a few errors. But if a man left out of my room as fast as Ross (t v) did to Elizabeth, not even a “are you okay “. I would have been devastated. After all, Ross was 1/2 moralistic when it suited his purpose. He was married and couldn’t marry Elizabeth. I guess he would have been riding his horse over to Nampara to visit his son and throw a way wife. Demelza was the best catch. Please don’t condemn me, I am just an old lady expressing my take on this marriage.

Series 5 ruined by writer Debbie Horsfield .No more original writer W.Graham .She's been allowed off the leash . Full of modern political correctness.Interacial marriage and mental health issues .hardly the topics of 19th cent England !! .largely now filmed in London too so the vistas have gone also ....So sad .
