‘America first!’ Donald Trump hammered out this message over and again in his inauguration speech a week ago today. He promised tariffs, a crackdown on immigration, and a restoration of American military might. He entered the White House as the least popular incoming president in 40 years.
Not every liberal thinker, however, is in a state of despair. Jeffrey Sachs was recently ranked by The Economist as one of the world’s most influential political scientists. No Trump supporter himself, he came to the Intelligence Squared stage to explain why there may be silver linings to the Trump cloud, and to set out a new world order.
Take trade. Trump has threatened to tear up Nafta and slam huge taxes on Mexican imports, and has already withdrawn the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership to bring jobs back to the heartlands of America. While this strikes fear amongst free-trade supporters, there is a case to be made that globalisation has been moving faster than is politically sustainable, dividing rich from poor.
Or take Trump’s proposal to invest $1 trillion in infrastructure. Sachs has described this promise to rebuild America’s decrepit inner cities, highways, schools and hospitals as ‘a valid, indeed uplifting perspective’, provided it is done in a smart and fair way. Trump’s programme could be viewed as a Keynesian fiscal policy to boost competitiveness and job creation. It may, Sachs believes, be Trump’s great legacy.
And then there’s foreign policy. As Sachs pointed out, Trump has filled his administration not just with protectionists but also with business people like himself, who enjoy making a buck (in fact, billions of them) and who have profitably invested for years in Russia, China, and other emerging economies. So while the rhetoric may be all about American primacy and trade protection, we shouldn’t rule out some friendly deal-making with other countries. And while Trump’s future relations with Vladimir Putin remain obscure, would it necessarily be a dangerous move if he pursues a conciliatory line with Russia? From a Russian perspective, America’s meddling in Ukraine and its attempts to bring that country into NATO, which would take the US-led military alliance right up to Russia’s border, look like aggression in its own historical sphere of influence. Isn’t it time there were a better understanding between both countries?
Sachs argued that we are entering not a new tripolar world, dominated by the US, China and Russia, but what he calls ‘the World Century’, in which the rapid spread of technology and the sovereignty of nation states mean that no single country or region will dominate the world. For Sachs, the great foreign policy challenge will be to manage cooperation among regions, and face up to our common environmental and health crises. The idea that one place or people should have primacy over any other should be as antiquated as slavery or empire, and guard us against the senseless descent into violence.

@imdahG While you have a start on the problem stop and consider. Trumpolini is doing nothing to stop the multinational elite , with no allegiance to anyone but themselves, from the race to the bottom. The corporate trade pacts demote all attempts of sovereignty in self determinism to guaranteed failure with the investor state dispute clause. Taking advantage of the climate change scare is allowing China, Germany and others to capitalise their investments , employ more of their citizens, and not needlessly waste trillions of dollars on further enriching the top one tenth percent of leeches with mindless taxpayer funded military and (in)security national budgets.

@imdahG - Neither Trump nor Clinton was a choice we deserved if we were looking for significant, positive change. Trump truly is a psychopath - I can't think of a thing he's done that would negate what the speaker Large scale imprisonment of children (youngest reported - 4 months) iin filthy, crowded conditions where bathing is disallowed and food is sparse Legislation which resulted in mega million donation to the rich and powerful at a time when a vast number of these people don't pay their fair share of taxes; similarly, corporations. Providing every sign imaginable that he wants to be a dictator. Whilst there is a great deal of poverty, poor health care, ignorant denial of climate change, he wants to spend mega billions to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S. He's lawless. He's an inveterate liar.--anything goes notwithstanding the dire effects of his lies. The list of his criminal behaviour is endless.. However, I will add one more thing--he is not only a psychopath, he's an abject ignorant one. I agree, 911 was an inside job; not certain about the no-planes theory, but even if they crashed into the buildings, they weren't at all responsible for the Twin Towers (all three) collapsing. The Bushes and their cohorts in Congress were an evil bunch. Clinton was not much better. I'm not holding out for positive change. Even if a Senator Warren or Bernie Saunders or the like were to be voted in, turning the US of A battle ship around in quick fashion would be a pipe dream. But should Trump get in again, we are irrevocably hooped for the foreseeable future. Pessimism from these ranks is very much alive. Kiudding ourselves and hoping things will turn around under a Trump or Trump type would be a fool's game. The voters must wake up to the facts and DO something. Hope ain't gonna do it. Action en masse is the order of the day. Cheers.

I have been a fan of Professor Sachs since I watched him he has a guest on Morning Joe show where he actually did something very unique in the mainstream media and that was he told the truth about the Iraq War as well as what was going on in Syria and that's why I ended up here watching this wonderful discussion which I now appreciate him even more why in the world can we not have people in Congress like Jeffrey Sachs...? Yes, that was rhetorical I already know and so do most of you... But take solace in that because that is a good thing as 30 years ago much fewer people had this kind of awareness of global matters let alone the insane undermining of our constitution By corporate America and the military industrial complex. Can you imagine Tulsi gabbard being president and Tulsi appointing Professor Sachs to a cabinet position? I don't want to get myself too excited because reality is far removed from what are hopes are but we must keep punching up while they are punching down

Good to hear an economist emphasising the environment. He says that humans will survive a warming globe but they may well not. Picture what goes on in the oceans-the food chain that is a system of dependency. We can easily grasp hold of the fact that if their is break down in the system then existence of all life that plays a part in the chain is threatened with extinction. Now appreciate that the a likewise type of scheme operates on land. Dependency exists between species. We do not know for certain how the breakdown of the system would unfold but nothing is more certain than it would happen. From the most vulnerable up and onwards, our environment would become unable to sustain life. We must stop warming our world.

I recommend a book written in 1830 called 'Democracy in America' by Alexis De Tocqueville. He arrived from France to study various 'systems' in America and discovered much to his surprise that American democracy was a system from the 'ground up'.. It began in the Town Hall. So.. where did 'that' America go to? We are now a managed population.

What I believe electrasong is that after WWII, instead of fighting countries with armies, bribing them was effective enough. This dollar diplomacy slowly became the standard for the elite, politicians, corporates. Which in effect slowly became the standard for domestic operations as well. You heard Sachs: congress is being bribed by big oil and gas.

Jefferey Sachs gives a fair description of the symptoms of the last 50 years of hegemonic neoliberal disorder. His leaderless global movement for consensus is a difficult sell to the Machiavellian establishment, who are unknowingly creating a reactionary world of their subconscious fears. Social inequalities amplified by economic inequities seem ill served by the magical thinking of a deus ex machina techno-resolution; yet, not even a phantasmagorical plan of action can be foretold. The last 25 years of malaise ends as it began, cognitively captured in a death cult spiral. Denial of our complicity with moral corruption has caused our anti-social civilization collapse. Sacrifice corporate profits in exchange for 6th extinction assurance? Whether property rights or human rights will predominate over the common good pretexts the final social order.

If you're saying the discussion is highly politicized, yes -- that makes it harder to get an honest, complete picture of the costs and benefits of renewables. But I also think some shortcomings of new technologies are not always ignored but necessarily framed as "problems to be solved", eg, the renewables sector continues to work on the battery/storage issue. But still, there are indeed intelligent experts who will plainly acknowledge the shortcomings of renewables... Just don't be surprised if they continue by saying, "... This talk is the weakest in this series and very frustrating. He made only a handful of points on the subject and the overall message was garbled. His final point, essentially detached from the balance of his talk, is that we need a common direction, not leadership. This man is detached from reality. Without leadership, nothing will happen. He feels we have done nothing in the last 30 years to prevent climate change. I agree--because we lack leaders with the conviction to convince the people to act.

Foster Wheeler Energy Company (FW) 1997. All FW DisciplineEngineers were gathered together to be told of a new development. Due to the availability of the new techniques, to be able to electronically produce deliverables ( documents), FW was reviewing "Cheap Cost Centres". The gathered engineers had never heard of the term "Cheap Cost Centres" before and the manager really did not expand on the implications within his statement, which was very brief. Later, is was rumoured that FW was to rent offices in two Indian cities and expanding the scope of a third office in Thailand. For many years, the highly qualified Discipline Engineers of FW had operated a process in which new graduates would be given an initial induction and training before each gradute was placed on a project. This process ensured that FW always had first class staff to support the Company's objectives. Graduates into FW were from Bristish Universities. Accordingly, it was a surprise when a group of Indian Engineers came into the offices of FW, in Reading Berkshire, UK, and FW management issued an instruction that the FW Discipline Engineers would train up this incoming group. What was more shocking was that a very arrogant young Indian Engineer stated to the Discipline Engineer, who was enhancing the skills of the indian Engineer " Once we (the indian group) understand what you ( the FW engneers do) we will take over all your work and execute it in India ( within the Cheap Cost Centres). THAT IS GLOBALISATION as experienced in leading Industrialised countries. However, the use of "Cheap Cost Centres" backfired and FW, eventually, was absorbed into other companies as a lost cause. Now the ELITE are asking why the PEOPLE are rebelling against their leaders of industry backed up by Politicians such as Theresa May and decrying POPULARISM (Rule by the PEOPLE as oposed to Rule by the ELITE)

Excellent video. His explanations crystallise my thoughts on the corruption within the political system of the USA. He is very optimistic about robots. My view on robots and AI is the opposite. I am very concerned and feel very pessimistic about the future for us all, except for the elites who control us. I agree with his closing statement, "... we are in a period of profound change". This has the potential to transform into an egalitarian, utopian world. But, being realastic; looking at the world in its current state, I don't believe that can ever happen, because the human spirit is only human and time and time again we show ourselves to be greedy, dishonest, self-centred, egotistical, cruel, resistant to change and too rigid in our belief systems. The world is a mess. It's not the person in the street: the Jon/Joan Doe's or the common man/woman who creates these problems. It's the rich and powerful elites, who control our politicians who engineer these problems for their own benefit. How can we combat these elites? Is it possible to defeat them?

What’s really depressing is that this most excellent spot on lecture by Professor Sacks was given 5 years ago, and it’s obvious that all his insightful intellectual views, which absolutely mirrors mine, have gone no where, sadly, in fact things seem to have gotten worse, with the invasion of Ukraine, and the pandemic, but it’s always darkest before the dawn, and hopefully those who understand this, will turn out in droves for the upcoming med term elections, to send the message that the things Jeffrey spoke so eloquently about will change for the better, hopefully!! I’ve enjoyed this, thank you you tube for posting…

@@stephenodhiambo6982 very true, unfortunately, but what just as sad, is how easily people vote with their pocket book, the candidate that spends the most wins, telling me that people put self interest or financial interests over really important issues like climate change, and intellectuals are often ignored…

“O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. Come to the aid of man, whom Almighty God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan. “Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven. That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity. “These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered. “Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord; and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen. V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers. R. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered, the root of David. V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord. R. As we have hoped in Thee. V. O Lord, hear my prayer. R. And let my cry come unto Thee. Let us pray. O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as supplicants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin Immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious St. Michael the Archangel, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all the other unclean spirits who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of souls. Amen.”

But we must not forget what Christ said on how to pray. Also he said Father I want them to have what I have and do ... The powers of the Father and more .. so all we have to do is believe what Chris told his Father he was not kidding around with those words.. he mentioned them and he told his father this after the bad Jews turned away from him so he gave the blessings to you the gentiles and all those long prayers have little power if any because you have Christ in you we are all sons of the Father in light or energy

Judging by the comments below this discussion has largely fallen on deaf ears. It's reminiscent of a family breakdown in which the parents are so preoccupied with their disagreements that they are blissfully unaware of the catastrophic and permanent damage they are doing to their children. From my outside perspective the two contending ideologies currently vying for hegemony of the state are BOTH unsustainable. A government that convinces itself that pandering to multi national corporations and billionaires rather than the well being of the population as a whole is a viable strategy is setting itself up for civil unrest and revolution. You would think a nation born of a revolution might keep that in mind. Similarly, the growing movement on the left that seems obsessed with a victim mentality and a desire for radical social engineering can only end up by making itself stupid and inefficient. Every time an educational institution prioritises an ideal of social justice over the quality of its scholarship, every time they deny a position to a worthy student in favour of another less capable one on account that they identify as a gay whale they make the country a little bit more stupid. The US has seemingly managed to cherry pick ALL the worst parts of their national character and decided it would be a really, really good idea if they just concentrated on these, to the exclusion of those that once saw them as one of the most respected and admired nations on the planet. I'm reminded of a book by Barbara Tuchmann, "The March of Folly", well worth a read if you're inclined to ponder these sorts of things. It's all very short term thinking, and the nation can't progress because its leaders are too focused on winning the next election, any concerns about the real health of their society coming in a very distant second, "Me first and fuck the rest of you", that's how it is apparently.

In fact, I disagree with almost everything he says, with the exception of when he states that China's emissions alone, if allowed to carry on the way they are going, can and will destroy the environment.....Begs the question; Where are all the carbon taxes we in the west are paying really going ?..... Democracy is not primarily a way of life, but a set of procedures for organising and operating government. There are no inherent substantive ends or core beliefs that are essential to democratic rule. The majority of a community may embrace any set of core beliefs that it chooses.

It always has. The US leading the West was never allowed to put its interests first, it was always the Wests interest. Take for example, North Korea, we want to squash their long range missile capabilities so they can't hit us with missiles. Well wait, thats not good enough for Japan. So we gotta argue for the low range as well. This happens constantly. Every Nation fights for itself, even when pretending to fight for others, except for the USA.

China has a China first policy too. The difference is that when America says it, they mean it in a foreign policy way. That means, America first, everyone else be damned. But they ignore the domestic policy. For China, saying China first primarily has to do with domestic policy. Impressive growth and 5-year plans, focus on innovation and infrastructure etc. It's only in the last decade that China began to look outward and make moves on the world stage. America started out with the principle - trade with everyone, friends with no-one. But rather than friends, America, through its foreign policy made a whole lot of enemies. America, sadly, could never get over its addiction to war and domination. China started out with the same principle. And so far, Chinese policy seems... Comparatively peaceful. (The recent development of "cooperation without limits" with Russia is interesting. But I do understand where it comes from)

I think Sachs needs a more evocative image of the Good World. Who wants to sit in Starbucks forever? “Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defence each year and instead spend it feeding, clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded. And we could explore space together - both inner and outer - forever, in peace.” - Bill Hicks

Any one that wants a New World Order and follows Globalism are people that need assistance in getting through life. They require someone to say "Jump" and they only have to answer "how high". If they think they will have any say in what is requested from them good or bad is totally delusional. Once we go down that road there is no going back 1984 accomplished Hitlers dream complete.
