There are a lot of great videos out on how to grow a Red Mangrove in your reef tank, so what happens once you have had success? How do you trim, wire the growing mangrove tree? How do you provide the nutrients that the mangrove needs? And how do you dose the missing nutrients? In this video I had the pleasure to pick the brain of Tyler @inland_reef on all these questions and more!

Honored to be able to help you out. I remember watching the video when you first got this mangrove. Love the way it looks now, even with the happy accident. Can’t wait to see how you shape the canopy for the future! Happy Reefing.

Thank you again Tyler! I can't even tell it was cut now -- so much so that I am ready to do another round of trimming, lol. Will try not to accidentally cut off another big branch again........... looking forward to see how your Black Mangrove tank does!

You've done the best with growing these mangroves than anyone else I've seen. Mine tend to die in time, either dry leaves or randomly. PLEASE get some real pruners😅

AWesome! To be honest, the shorter you can cut the branches the better the tree will look, EVentually. Bonsai is a long game. I let my trees extend 8-9 leaves and then I cut back to the first leaf, shortening the branch drastically. Think at least 5 years into future. It was a good cut, trust me! This technique is called clip-and-grow. Takes longer than wiring but yields much better and natural looking results.

Classic...I was watching you about to cut it cringing hoping you would notice but then... snip...Looks heaps better now anyway, got to keep them short and stocky.Look at WWC mangrove, pretty much a topiarized ball. Best looking mangrove i have seen.

I think you are either going to get a larger tank, or dedicate that tank solely to the mangrove, and animals that live in that ecosystem. As I think you have to competing ecosystems in that 17 gallon, each with different needs, that may not be able to be met in such a small space.

Oh don't feel bad about that cut on a tree. Bonsai people often make accidental cuts that take off unintended branches, and sometimes even snap branches and trunks while bending them. If your tree is healthy, and you haven't done something that the physiology of that tree can't deal with (like cut behind all the living foliage of a branch for some species), it will be fine. Haven't grown mangroves before myself, but what you've done doesn't appear seriously damaging in any way. Remember, they live in places with cyclones/hurricanes/typhoons and evolved to take all that force head on, with nothing else sheltering them. Losing a branch here and there isn't a massive drama.

You make a very good point about mangrove probably get it way worse in nature...! So far the mangrove is carrying on as-if nothing has every happened, I am ready to go in for another round of trimming! As for the Bonsai artists... I cannot even begin to imagine accidentally lop off a branch that took years to grow, lol! Sounds like you are into Bonsai?

Guilty, @@InappropriateReefer! Like both of you, I have too many hobbies. Every respected bonsai practitioner has accidentally "destroyed" things that took years if not decades to grow. In some cases, centuries. One of the more famous bonsai artists out there tells a story about how he accidentally twisted off a major branch on a Japanese heritage bonsai tree during a demo (if I recall correctly). That branch had been on that tree for decades. If you work wild material, you can accidentally destroy things like deadwood that took centuries to form. Basically, you have to just roll with it. Not be negligent, but accept that sometimes, these things happen in the pursuit of a more aesthetic design for a tree. It's an "opportunity" for its ultimate design/shape.
