Personally, whilst I understand some people recommend starting from the Pits when trying to get out of Rookies, I warn against doing so. You don’t learn how to race or how to avoid wrecks, by avoiding the racing entirely and if you do this, what happens when you reach the higher Licences? Yep, you find that you are the guy that hasn’t gained any of the racing experience that those around you gained when they were Gridding for races in Rookies.

@ChambersofSiege You do, you learn to avoid them. You don't gain any experience in racing by not racing.

Each to their own of course. Whatever you do, you’re going to get hit from time to time if you go racing, real or simulated and I’ll bet the ranch that everyone who complains about getting hit, has done their share of the hitting too, on occasion.

Nice video! My safety rating before I watch this video was 2.79. I was fighting for the 3rd place every race and usually I used to get +.03 every race. After two races starting in the pits I got my D license and 2.43 safety rating. If you are a beginner like me, do what Dave does and you’ll get your D license in less than a day. Thank you Dave!
@charleslevine9482

I think the best way to do it is to do time trials. You don't need to worry about people crashing you out. As long as you don't go off the track (which you should be able to do if you want to race against other people anyway) you'll gain safety rating quickly. I got to A class in less than a month doing this.

It was this exact instruction video that made me discover Dave's own channel and an immediate subscription there. All gold material. And this very video got me into iRacing after nearly 10 years of hibernation. Couldn't reactivate my old account (only used for a few practice, so not really startet), so startet all over. And just following this video got me from Rookie over D to C in almost no time. OK, admit I've been a simmer for 35 years (definately born decades too soon). iRacing have improved a lot since the first beta proving grounds in the beginning.

I can't believe iRacing published an official video where we are explained that racing is so dirty that we need to start at the back of the grid to avoid the mayhem. This is basically how to use the simulator to not simulate a race. You learn by doing things, not avoiding them. The rest of the video is pretty good anyway.
@backlog2389

Agreed, qualifying at the back does nothing for you. I learned a lot about racing around others in Mazdas. It also has less of a tendency of ending your race when something goes wrong as compared to skippys or IMSA.

I started my iRacing account yesterday. I did about an hour of practice on Okayama (i think that's the name), qualified on pole for my first race, freaked out about being in first, cold tires going into the second corner, spun and got hit by two cars (my bad, what an idiot...). My second race I didn't qualify, started at the back, battled my way through the pack and got third I think. I learnt a lot in both races but I think for the enjoyment of everyone it was better for me to start at the back for at least the first few races. Just my two cents.

I will try this IRFFB prog folks are on about, but so far so good. This vid helped me get out of Rookie in one night round Oran Park, fastest lap so far 1:160, chest suitably puffed out. :) Thanks, from a fellow Geordie.

Hi Dave great vid I subscribed to your channel last year and used your link to sign up to iracing so your vids gave me the inspiration and its a love hate with iracing still learning now on B licence so keep up the good work mate one thing I have learnt is when I signed up I did it for one year what I should have done is sign up on the 2 year deal because the first year is all about establishing your self and getting the cars and tracks and driving them safe and competitive. I am not fast so my goal is to drive constantly and I get mid pack finish sometimes top 5 and when I check the results the guys finished behind me where faster than but they spent more time off track because they where not consistent. Any way Dave keep up the good work thumbs up from me

great video. put simply, stay on track and avoid everyone like they're blind. iRating doesn't matter so it's not about finishing first, but finishing the safest. its easy to get mad at other people for crashing into you but at the end of the day, a smart driver will be the one who is able to avoid those people and take responsibility for the crashes they find themselves in lol

My guide: 1. Do not qualify. This will put you at the back, but it’ll help you avoid crashes. Don’t be mad about your finish, it’s about safety. 2. At the start of the race, try to fall back carefully, but not too much. It will give you more time to slow down without people rear ending you and affecting your SR. 3. When you see smoke and/or cars wrecking, give a tap on the brakes and go slowly through without hitting anyone. Once through without damage, continue on. (Works on all types of tracks)

I agree on the part wait till the field spreads out, but what i miss is you have to train first i started last week in laguna seca ran multiple hours to set up my steering wheel, learning the track and car. Ended the first race on p1 second on p3 just by being faster because i spent more time. Yes ofcourse i had some bad races both my and mostly other faults, but if you race the way like dave showed you dont know how to follow other cars and how to safely overtake

My daughter just got her D license in three races. She practiced the track a few times ahead - over an hour. She qualified mid-pack, let lots of people by before turn 1, only had 1 incident point total for all three races. No on track passes, plenty of passing cars that spun or went to the pits. Laguna Seca was the track. The long front straight gives you some time to get to the back, or make a gap and avoid close racing in turn 1. iRacing has the schedule posted on their website so you can practice the week before if you like.

First Race tonight. Lime Rock in the MX5. Qualified 6th. Got a wicked Start, putting me into 3rd, and avoiding the major wreck that occurred behind on turn 3. Had to concede on lap 15 and fell to 4th. Guy behind me was getting frustrated and decided to dive bomb me from behind on the Chicane (Turn 5?). Saw it coming and simply didnt turn where he was expecting me to. Watched him fly over the Sausage Curb and I continued on, unscathed. 4th Place! Felt so good!!!! 1 Incident for going off track.

Dave, love your videos. Maybe you can answer this question: If you’re in a wreck andyou can make it back to the pits, but the spotter says to wait for a tow truck. Which is faster, waiting for the tow truck to tow you back, or driving yourself back? Even after I get back to the pits, the tow truck still comes out.

My advice on how to get of rookie class? Don't. Stay in rookie for a season, learn your car and then learn car- and track awareness. Also learn to drive out of your comfort zone and off the line. It's rookie class for a reason and if you follow a video like this then you are a rookie (or curious)

Just get gud, qualify first, and then leave everyone else behind EZ. Honestly though, not qualifying only has the benefit of not getting hit from behind on the first corner. The other side effect is that you see every single wreck that will occur during the race (better get good at wreck avoidance and predicting the unpredictable). Another issue is that you have to pass people that are slower than you and typically these people are not very good at going two wide. The best advice for qualifying is to just qualify the best you can. I learned that lesson the hard way and you don't have to.

Honestly, I always seen people looking for guides how to leave rookies. I'm not sure if I just was lucky. I made literally 4 races and was out of rookies. It was the simplest thing ever. In all races I finished 6th. In one of the races I had a crazy dive bomber so I finished with 4x and in another race I went off track once and so I only had 1x. The other 2 I was 0x. It's simple, don't crash. You have to be preventive of what the others are doing. I see two guys fighting in front of me. Most likely I won't be trying to overtake them both. Before overtaking I also analyze the other guy in front of me. Sometimes they are going all crazy trying to get out of your tail, but they just end up making a mistake. You just have to be patient. If you avoid all crashes you will most likely not have any problems with the rookies, even the crazy guys. If you see an overly aggressive, weaving driver, just let him have the position, why bother fighting? You don't gain anything yet for winning, so you might as well want to get out of rookies asap

Hey iRacing!! please add an option to "skip qualifying" so that people that do qualify don't have to wait the entire 5 minutes to race. That just makes it stale and boring. I don't mind the strategy, and I do the same...I just do a really slow lap so that I'm not the guy making everyone else fall asleep at the wheel while waiting on the race to start!
@T1cksandLeeches

@What's on my mind that's called a workaround, not an in-game option. Clicking a button would be a lot faster and easier, and allow you to practice without having to leave for qualifying and hoping you can get back into the server before the race. If everyone has qualified/skipped, the qualifying period doesn't need to drag on for the entire time. It would be a nice quality of life upgrade is all.

Thanks for the video Dave! just curious, how do you brake so little in corners that require a lot of braking? Personally on this track at the last corner, I brake at 100% and then I release brake pedal. On your video I can see that you press the brake pedal very little. How can I improve the braking technique? - Driving with a g29 wheel.

Sometimes less is more. If you are maxing out the braking then you're into the abs which isn't the most efficient way of braking. Ideally you want to be at maximum force just before the abs kicks in 👍

My issue- Loosing irating due to someone that has such bad internet their car floats on and off and when I pass them up I get docked 8xs for contact that never happened on my side.
