King’s Troop. The 4 O’ Clock Parade.
The Dismount Parade which takes place daily on the courtyard in front of Horse Guards when the mounted sentries who have been guarding the official entrance to Buckingham Palace are relieved by dismounted sentries.
Also known as 'The Four 'O' Clock Parade' and 'Punishment Parade' it takes place at 16:00 daily when following an inspection by an Officer the mounted guards dismount, then take their horses back to the stables for the night.
History of the Parade
The 4 'o' Clock Parade started in 1894 when Queen Victoria found the entire guard drinking and gambling while on duty and as a punishment, ordered that they had to be inspected every day at 4pm by an officer for the next 100 years!
Although the 100 years finished in 1994 the reigning Queen wanted the parade to continue as a tradition.
Two dismounted sentries will then guard the entrance until 20:00 when the gates to Horse Guards are closed and then one sentry will remain on duty until 07:00 when the gates re-open.

You should be proud! I was just thinking how beautifully statuesque she looks. I was appalled at how the people were just walking all around her like she wasn’t there. Then a young girl saw her and purposely walked behind her. It looked like her family followed her. At last someone with manners! Please pass on to your cousin that I enjoyed seeing her and that I think she is doing a beautiful job!

As for the guards weapons, I recall in BAOR days the weapon of choice as a token wooden pick handle not a sword. The guards on duty could be supported by the remainder in the guard house, if called out in an emergency or for inspection. They also had wooden pick handles. I suppose the difference here is the ceremonial nature of the guard in the video.

They are extremely impressive. Smart , well turned out, great at the drills , and robust when needed. Well done all. The obvious problem is that guarding anything with a sword isn't entirely practical. It doesnt matter so much in this setting, as they have strong armed police support and Whitehall has lots more nearby.. And, indeed, the sentry on duty looks great with the sword. But at places like Windsor or Buckingham palace, they are meant to provide army support to the police if needed. Perhaps those on standby indoors could be given a SA80 or pistol, so they never have to charge intruders with a sword??

Have you ever heard of Audie Murphy ? one of the shortest and youngest soldiers of WW2 and the most decorated soldier in the American Army, he looked like a mere boy. I think no one should judge a book by its cover, there are serving women in the SAS. and no one can join the SAS directly from civilian life, they will have all served in the our regular Army like this serving female soldier. Its really not what she looks like but what she is prepared to do when called upon to do her duty. from an old veteran. peace.

It's to warn the horse that a change in weight is going to happen - more important when the Life Guards (red tunics) & the Blues & Royals (blue tunics) are on duty. They wear heavy armour, helmets & riding boots. The horses are trained to recognise the signal, it's not hard & is on the saddle or neck. It's like us being tapped to get our attention.

Whilst, unfortunately, their presence is required in these dangerous times the constabulary looked decidedly unkempt, inattentive and slovenly. I maybe incorrect but, I did not see any police officer salute the officer carrying out the inspection - absolutely disgraceful. The onlookers were a disorganised rabble who should have been controlled more effectively. Good Parade by the Kings Troop.

Mr. Gibson, neither the constabulary nor the King's Troop looked 'unkempt, slovenly and inattentive.' It is obviously nasty and spiteful to say that they did. They are there to protect what is going on and they are watching around carefully all the time. Most of us respect them and are very proud of them. I was fifteen in 1945, but we continued to be called up to do two years military service until 1963. I used to ride a horse, drive military vehicles and was posted to serve in the Royal Military Police and served in the Middle East. I used to ride and jump horses, ride a motor bike and drive an army lorry. I know Venice very well and have rowed in the canals and wallked around the Piazza San Marco. I've also served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy aswell as Gibraltar, Malta, Egypt, Ethiopia, Palestine etc. I also know India, Australia and New Zealand and have climbed Mount Everest and I've been to the South Pole. I fought against the Argentinians and helped drive them out of British territory. I've also written three published books. I've never smoked and I do not drink alcohol. Madagascar is an Island I know very well and am famiiiar with its fauna There are eight main religions in the world. I am familiar with all of them. Can you name them? Oh yes, and I've also worked with elephants. Did you know that there are three species of elephant existing in the world today? Can you name them? Next to humans, Bonobo Chimps are the most intelligent of all animals. Several kninds of birds are very intelligent. Humans are mammals, which are divided into three kinds: monotremes, marsupials and placentals. By the way, if you had observed the constabulary correctly you could not fail to see how very effective they are.

@@anthonyweedonweedon1426 Firstly, as required by Military Protocol, you should address me as either Sir or Major. Secondly I did not make any derisory comment regarding the turnout and the Parade of the Kings Troop. In fact I ended my comment thus - "Good Parade by the Kings Troop". Nor did I criticise the constabulary for being ineffective. Your comments are in fact rank insubordination and would have resulted in you being issued with a F252 ( Fizzer ). The rest of your diatribe does not warrant further comment from me.

@@allangibson4354 You need to realise that I have never been guilty of any kind of diatribe during my long life. I was born on 16 March 1930, the day before Saint Patrick's Day. . When I was called up to do my two years national service, aged twenty, I served in the Royal Military Police from 1950 to 1952 when I spent most of my service in the Middle East. I learned to drive and operate several kinds of military vehicles and to ride and jump horses. After leaving the army I went back to college and was later ordained as a clergyman in the Anglican Church. I've travelled up and down both the Nile and the Suez Canal. I've written three published books and won poetry competitions. I've travelled all round Planet Earth and served in the Falkland Islands where we were engaged in driving out the Argentinians. I've been to the South Pole and lived among the penguins. .There's lots more; but I won't bother you with it except to say that I've climbed Mount Everest. An older brother of mine served in the RAF during the Second World War and another brother served in the RAMC. Oh yes, and besides horses, I've also ridden elephants. Did you know that there are three surviving species of elephant living on Planet Earth? Can you name them? Where are they to be found? There's lots more, but this will do for now. What are 1st.March, 17 March, 23 April and 30 November? Do you know? Can you tell me where 'the Litttle England beyond Wales' is? Don't bully me, Mr. Gibson. I'm not a soldier serving under your command. It's time you grew up and learned to behave like a proper soldier like I always was. Were you?
