Iranian President #Raisi had a long list of enemies, both from without and within. It is not unreasonable to question whether his colleagues conspired to eliminate him.

Aircraft crashing in fog with high level government officials actually happens a lot happened to Polish president and a plane full of US ambassadors, the military pilots who fly these things have a crazy high risk tolerance and are trained to complete their mission at all costs and are trained to fly in conditions no passenger plane should. They view delaying or changing airports or go-arounds or adjusting course for weather as failing their mission. So they fly with 0 visibility close to the ground and crash.

One big mistake: There is no democratic part in Iranian regime. All apparently elected positions are controlled by the guardian council whose members are handpicked by the supreme leader. This way, the supreme leader engineers elections so only his people can run. There is something called approval of qualification in Iran for running for presidency ( or member of parliament or assembly of experts). The body which approves or disapproves one’s qualification is… you guessed it: the guardian council, which is unelected and handpicked by the supreme leader himself.

The helicopter that the President was flying in was US-made and over 40 years old. The service life of a helicopter is ~20 years. I'm sure the Russians or Chinese (nominal allies of Iran) would have been happy to sell them a newer and more reliable helicopter. As noted in this report, Iran has accused the US of continuing sanctions (which is true) denying them spare parts as an explanation for the crash, but stopped short of anything clearer. In this report, I wonder why the the advanced age of the helicopter wasn't mentioned?

Uzbekistan went from an isolationist nation to a semi-globalised one after their President died in 2016. Saudi is currently going through something similar with MBS making the nation unrecognisable from a decade ago. Iran's Ayatollah structure seemingly ensures that a similar thing could never happen though. With Ayatollah Khamenei turning 85 recently, it would be a surprise if there's even a small shift in foreign and domestic policy from his successor. The Assembly of Experts who elect the Ayatollah have allegedly already selected the next Ayatollah anyway.

The Supreme Leader wasn't really meant to be a political post in the first place, at least when Khomeini was alive. Let me explain this to you, the Supreme Leader was based on the idea of the "guardianship of the jurist." Khomeini's main role was to enforce the country's Islamic law and he acted as some sort of constitutional monarch, interfering ONLY in political crisis such as when the ultraconservative Majlis (parliament) impeached the leftist president Banisadr. But in reality, day-to-day running of the government really resided with Khamenei (then-president, managed the war effort against Iraq) and Mousavi (PM, kept the economy afloat, post was replaced with VP afterwards). But yeah, Khomeini was a good posterboy for the regime, telling the people especially children to fight the Iraqis in human waves and even if they die, they'll have their place in Jannah. But things got tricky after Khomeini's death, the post started to become a politicized one by removing the religious requirement (ex. imagine a non-cardinal becomes Pope, though it happened in the past) but Khamenei was ceremonial at first because it's President Rafsanjani who put him in position in the first place. Rafsanjani amassed influence during his time as Majlis speaker enough for Khamenei to be ceremonial in his early years but without noticing, Khamenei was also building up his power base particularly in the military and IRGC. A setback came when Khamenei quashed Rafsanjani's attempt to amend the constitution so he can run for a 3rd term. Out of anger, Rafsanjani allowed more reformists to compete in the election thus the Khatami presidency was born. Ever since then post-1997 or I should say post-Rafsanjani, Iranian presidents had been always subordinate to the Supreme Leader, either you kiss his hand like Ahmadinejad and Raisi or get annoyed everytime your reform gets blocked like Khatami and Rouhani.

The guardianship of the jurist was imagined to be something semi-political like what Iraq unofficially has with Ayatollah Seestani. But the combination of the way Shah being forced out Imam Khomeneis Charisma the wave of political assassination's and the Iran Iraq war made the position more powerful than intended because some many political leaders died Khomeni had to interfere more than expected. Rafsanjani tried to move the guardian jurist back to a ceremonial role after Khomeneis death and make the president the main point of power. He pushed Khamenei into the position which deftly simultaneously got rid of his main political rival be relegating him to the ceremonial role, took out Ahmed Khomeini for consideration and denied the position to all the other senior clerics. Khamenei realized what was happening too late and tried to argue his way out saying "How can I be the leader when some of you (senior cleric) don't recognize me as (Ayatollah) what kind of leader would that be? But Rafsanjani shut the debate held the vote and Khamenei was stuck because he couldn't reject the degree of senior clergy. Rafsanjani plan succeeded and failed at the same He was able to accumulate much wealth and rebuild the country and temporarily reduce the power of his rivals. However Shia theology has so much respect for the leader which gave him more influence than expected. Khamenei used that to build his own militia the IRGC which answer to him directly. This gave what Rafsanjani thought would be a purely ceremonial position enforcement power. He used the basij like general Qasim to build the militias in Syria Lebanon and Yemen. The other part was Khamenis youth as the other Ulama passed away and he rode out attempts to oust him it left Khamenei with political executive and religious authority as well extreme direct influence in the region and the only cleric of that standing left alive. Khamenei tried to groom Raisi to be his successor even sending his son to campaign for him but now that plan is gone.

There is no mundane crashes in high politics. This was Iran's president. The same country which is almost in open war with Israel and the US. For the first time I disagree with a point made here, that being Israel wouldn't see it as reckless and ineffective to assassinate President Raisi. Netanyahu has been advocating for a war with Iran for as long as he's been in office. Drawing Iran into a violent engagement would only benefit Israel, as it would force the U.S. to become further involved in their wars. No idea whether Israel is behind Raisi's death, but they would indeed have much to gain from a war with Iran.
@gedalyahreback2133
@gedalyahreback2133 24 күн бұрын
Living in Israel I'll say that a lot of people here are joking about Mossad having done it, but it's just so unlikely because the fallout from such an attack would be gargantuan if it were ever public that Israel actually did it. And the US isn't always going to get involved in these conflicts-the US has been extremely risk averse for the last 15 years and no one would take it as a guarantee that the US would go all in on a war against Iran. The other thing is that Raisi isn't a high value target to the extent that a general is or the supreme leader. Maybe someone could predict a destabilizing fight for power like this video suggests could happen, but that's hardly a guaranteed outcome if you're the hypothetical personal planning to assassinate the president and foreign minister.

But West won’t back Israel in war with Iran, not this time. Iran is too dangerous, they have three thousand ballistic missile and have very advance nuclear program, actually they have enough enriched uranium to produce nuclear weapon. Israel doesn’t even have Access to Iran, so how actually could look war between Israel and Iran? Only another proxy war. Iran migth pressure Hezbollah to attack Israel, send reinforcement to Lebanon to start a hell in Lebanon and Sheba farms. Which is very beneficial to Iran, but not to Israel.

The Grand Ayatollah has by no means lived past his "life expectancy" whatever that means. Infact Mullahs tend to live long lifes due to being carefree, not having to deal with strains and burdens of life like the general population, besides having the best access to medical care and treatment. Spot on, there's an old saying in Iran to have "hands like a mullah" -- gentle soft hands, that is to say not having had to endure pressures of life. Mojtaba Khamenei cannot enter governmental or political positions because the Supreme Leader of Iran has prohibited all his children from engaging in these matters to prevent them from exploiting their father's position. 2. Additionally, the future leadership of Iran can be either individual or council-based, as determined by the Assembly of Experts. 3. Members of the Assembly of Experts are elected by the people, and the next leader of Iran (if the leadership remains individual) will be one of the members of the Assembly of Experts. As I mentioned above, Mojtaba Khamenei cannot register for this.

what a fucked up form of government. A supreme leader is just governing on the way to control absolutely and the presidents is just burdened with all the responsibility and work, in the end the people suffers.

In Russia you have to be careful around windows. In Iran you need to be vary of helicopters. Of course the west is no better with a tendency for people with dirt on higherups to be suicidal... Interesting times we live in...
