"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

@@eyeofthetiger6008Iranians didn’t revolt at all. The so called Islamic revolution was a false flag operation completely orchestrated by the Jews of Europe, United States and Russia via their usual tools of Islamist and leftist “opposition groups”. Jews have been using this tactic to topple all powerful empires since the inception of Judaism which was actually created to flee prosecution for crime of theft off ancient Silk Road!! Iran as an empire and as the oldest civilization in human history has been the target of Arab Jews who created Abrahamic dogma in order to destroy it century after century…, so this 1979 “revolution” was just part of a very ancient tradition of invading and partitioning another part of Iran.

If I am being honest, I know that in many ways, Iran, in terms of civil rights, is multiple steps behind the United States. I am concerned about regression and how willing people are to accept what might sound good over implementing policies. I do not know how anyone actually listening thinks Trump sounds good, though. Saying something and then doing the opposite I was raised to call lying. However, both parties do that, but clearly, one is better and does it with greater frequency. How embracing that as the solution.... I just don't get.

Yeah, that's the thing about Trump. He's not a true ideologue in anyway. He'll just do whatever gets him the most power and public praise from his cult. In a way, it's easy to ply him into doing what you want policy wise (especially with foreign policy) if you just praise him and give credit to him. South Korea's government, to pick one example, was able to get him to do a complete 180 early in his presidency on North Korea by attributing their diplomatic breakthroughs with the North (which SK's government had initiated and wanted) to Trump's tough talk. Their US ambassador and foreign minister told this to Trump himself and then asked if he wanted to engage with NK and Kim directly as well. He told them he would and the rest his history. DT went from "fire and fury" to Kim "wrote me love letters" even though Kim is in the minds of most American conservative ideologues is an evil communist tyrant. All that to say, Iran could very well play their cards right if they just praise the dude non-stop and treat him like the genius, emperor he thinks he is.

Yet he won by popular support. Sure Trump has done some of what he promised which was anti- swamp, but yet mainly done the opposite of "drain the swamp" and now (unlike 2016) is taking massive donations from the Swamp. Hilary & Biden both had bigger contributions from Wall St. But it is still true that Trump was like Bernie in that he was a popular candidate, but the Swamp couldn't stop him in 2016.

Labour not really being left is an understatement, they are centre right at this point somewhat equivalent to the Tories in 2010, there are some departures, like a focus on building houses and specifically social housing, which yes is a meaningful and positive difference and they want to nationalize rail as the contracts expire and water as the water companies go bankrupt-which the government will just freeze what the water companies can charge and start ramping up regulations to make that happen, which at the moment just means applying the regulations already on the books and undoing some of the deregulation the Tories did in the last 4 years-so they will be able to pick them up for rail at no cost at all, and water for a minimal cost, because the water companies cannot sell off the assets, they are still public property. So like again good less literal shit being dumped in rivers and the sea, homelessness will be reduced and rail will hopefully start to work better, but apart from that they are Tories with better unity because they kicked out almost all the left wing voices in the party.

The reality of this election is far from what it looks like. This guy is not a moderate at all he just plays one. He was implemented morality codes in the hospitals long before it was the law of the land. He was approved because they knew participation will be very low. They created a false duality by approving him to put him in contrast with a total nut job called Jalili (who was the nuclear negotiator for 10 years where Iran almost got attacked by US and amassed more than 1000 sanctions). Pezeshkian was the Ayatollah’s insurance policy. Still if we believe the official vote counts 51% of people didn’t participate in the election and he became the least popular president of Iran. By the way, he was forced to cancel his scheduled first press conference with media because he was summoned by the ayatollah who kept him there for 5 hours!

My observation is that Iran has been facing a civil revolt for years now. Tensions are high, regarding many domestic issues, let alone foreign diplomacy. Typical Iranians are unlike their government and they are NOT Islamic hard liners as would the media or or their own government would lead to believe. I have heard many times when Iranians correct people that " We are Persians, not some terrorists! " - they are proud people of their heritage. I think the loosening of laws comes directly from the Ayatollah, because as I said, they are now worried about a civil war, and it would be the civilians taking down their own government along with the ayatollah and his revolutionary guard. The election of this president is a proof that their are genuinely afraid. There are 50 million Persians and most are not hardcore religious extremists, but rather very progressive. There is also a growing number of those who no longer follow the Islam, but since that's punishable by death, they will not come forward. They figured they gonna need a more progressive person in charge to smoothen the public tensions. It's a win win either, way, I can only wish the Iranian people to succeed and make Iran a modern country as it deserves to be!

that's total BS By the way, not even a single Iranian extremist ever existed, and no one was executed for leaving religion or being gay. Those laws are semitic culture (Arabs and Jews), especially stoning people, which is Jewish and later adopted by Arab culture, which is Sunni Islam. Iranians are Shia, and Shia believe the law should change if circumstances change. For example, trans people are getting 100% free (paid by the government) surgery and hormone treatment in Iran after a trans person explained to Khomeini that being trans isn't a fetish and it is something people are born with, so he issued a fatwa (religious decree) that trans people should be respected with respect and empathy, and that happened 45 years before you westerners reached the same conclusion. The Persians invented human rights 2500 years ago and are the only nation that built 4 of the biggest empires in the world without slavery .so we changed Islam to our liking by throwing away every extremist stuff and they justified this by arguing that Arabs, after Mohammad died, denied leadership to the person Mohamad chosen, started the blood bath and invaded other countries such as Iran while Mohamad's war was all defensive and between Arab tribes and that's the exact reason why Shia believe offensive so-called jihad is forbidden unless is issued by Jesus and Mahdi . Shia, in addition to Jesus, believe Mahdi is Messiah too and they come together to spread justice . People consider god to be all good without evil so they interpret the text based on that. If you are uncultured Arabs, that killing peaple as punishment for small crimes because they had no prison system considering they were living in tent , and you are living by being bandit for generation/ thousands of years until oil was found in arab land . of cures when your psychology evolution happened in circumstance that you had to somehow convinced yourself that killing innocent people to steal their food isn't an evil deed; otherwise, you either die from starvation or become crazy from guilt . So after thousands of years of that, you have a culture that can believe that God, who is the source of all goods, not only doesn't punish you for suicide bombing and killing children in the process but he rewards you for it. On the other hand, the Persians, who were civilized at least for 5000 years and invented human rights and religious freedom 2500 years ago, googled Cyrus the Great and the Cyrus cylinder, which is acknowledged by the UN as the first declaration of human rights, and adopted its principles as the first 4 articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. so after thousands of years of that, there is no way you can convince a Persian god that he wants you to kill people from other religions, so they saw that as sign of corruption and say it happened by people who led the Muslims after Mohamed', which is why you only find Christian and Jews in Shia countries like Iran Lebanon and Syria thats was long way to tell you extremism is a culture and evolution issue not religion In fact, according to AI that examined, the Abrahamic religion's holly book, Islam is the least violent and the most violent being Jew and Christian is middle People who had slave in US and people who were fighting for abolition of slavery both justified their action based on the exact same verse in the Bible, but people who deeply considered slavery wrong believed god was against it and people who were genuinely considered themselves superior saw it differently

First of all, this election had the lowest voter turnout since the Islamic republic was established. Secondly, nothing happens in Iran without khamanei’s final nod of approval so this is all performative theatrics. If they’ve decided to go with a more moderate president at this point, it’s simply to appease the population for 4 more years until they inevitably switch back to a hardliner. Probably pretty long. He's not really progressive at all in an international context. Besides that, the president of Iran doesn't have any power beyond what the ayatollah gives him.

I mean if you don't have enough information you don't have to make these kind of misleading videos. There is no such a thing as rightwinger or leftwinger in Iranian politics. Pezeshkiyan even before the hijab mandate rule made it compulsory for hospital staff to wear hijab, he is also a former IRGC member.he also proposed "Efaf bill" in 2010. All the candidates go through a filter called shoraye negahban which literally translates to guardian council.half of the members are directly selected by Khamenei. Azeri Kurds don't exist. Azeri is referred to a ethnic group of 18 million who live in north-western Iran (southern Caucases) with considerable diaspora in Tehran and they speak Azerbayjani Turkish.Kurds are different ethnic group of about 13 million who live in Zagros mountains with considerable diaspora in Khorasan.

In Iran, left and right are totally different than say, Mexico. Left in Iran is considered pro-west and more neoliberal.

In comparison of the Iranian system to the US, replace the religious leadership or oligarchy with the financial leadership or oligarchy. The US system only allows certain candidates to run, those that try who are not from the allowed group are smeared or ignored or otherwise marginalized so as to make their efforts meaningless. Look at the recent democratic primary. Replace "Revolutionary Guard" with FBI, CIA, NSA etc. It's two sides of the same coin in a systemic manner.

Bro, as an Iranian, let me tell you that this guy ain't a progressive 😂😂 This dude literally came on television once and said that "I was the one who made the decision that male doctors were not allowed to visit female patients after the revolution had just begun"!!!! Bro I'm sorry but you can't tell me that you know my country better than I do!! I'm living here in this shit hole bro... And not a day goes by when I don't think to myself "why was I born here?!!" Just stop.... If you don't know anything about a topic you don't have to cover it!!!! Our politicians are all the same!!! Iran is under the leadership of its supreme leader and the president is only a puppet!! I don't know how much more clearly I can say it. Now I'm sure a lot of replies are incoming with the theme of "if you're really in Iran why is your English so good"(which by the way further proves that you don't know anything about my country)... But It's ok guys... I'm used to not being believed whenever I say I'm from my shit hole place of birth.... So fire away 😂 P.S: the majority of the Iranian people didn't vote in this election and thus said no to the regime's desperate attempts to prove it's legitimacy through the elections statistics

Understand that Iran is a complex society. It is ancient and has evolved much further without the different changes in theology the rest of the world experienced, save for China. Everything you do has to fit into religion. You can also argue that the religion actually stands behind the position you take. Note that every one of their university papers is peer reviewed GLOBALLY. They have the top mathematicians. They aren't a backwards society. They have been subject to American interference but American influence is waning and many want a way out without war.

Most people in Iran boycotted the election because they had been given 2 choices " a religious fundamentalist , and a mild religious fundamentalist leaning towards turkic ethno- nationalism, , therefore he won by % 20 votes many of ( non-turkic) voters were actually unaware of his separatist sentiments in the past .
