I taught my son literally everything about all my guns when he was 8yrs old including field striping cleaning and oiling. Then put him through a jr shooter's safety class. I believe in the philosophy of "kill the curiosity" your kids may be different but it worked for me. My son is 15y now and he has a great respect for firearms he goes to the range with me every time I go he knows where my guns are in the house and he is prepared to use them if necessary to protect the home if necessary.

Hi Guys Great Video, As a home builder for over 30yrs. I hope you can convince you to correct the one alarming thing I heard you say about locking the deadbolt with a key from the inside as well as the outside. In case of fire, you do not want to be looking for keys to get out of your own home. Especially if you have kids in the house. Though I don't think you mentioned it I was impressed that you had a digital lock instead of a key lock, they do offer much more security. Deadbolts or any door locks with keys on both sides are against fire and building codes across the country. imagine your wife is home and she hears someone roaming around in the house upstairs, Bsmnt, etc. she would need the fastest way out of the house without looking for keys. This comment is long but hopefully it saves a life. Thanks guys keep up the great work.

One thing I've noticed is that home security and fire safety employ different tactics of safety. Home security is about keeping you and your family safe from outside threats, whereas fire codes is about getting people out and allowing firefighters to get in. There is a fine line between securing your home and making your home into a potential tomb in the event of a fire. Depending on some municipalities, home security tactics (including some recommended in this video) can be violations of fire codes. Whether or not those fire codes are enforced is another issue (typically they're enforced after a fire has occurred). What I always learned was always keep windows farther than 42" away from door locks. If you have a window within that distance, you may need to use a security film on the window (which violates fire codes in many municipalities). One thing to always remember is no matter what method you use to secure your home from invaders, there is almost always a method to defeat your security measures. The question is is whether or not the criminal wants through all that trouble to gain entry to your home. I live in a small and modest home. We don't drive flashy cars and neither my wife nor I dress super fashionably. Our home is well kept and we already employ many of the recommendations of this video, but the idea is that we aren't a high value target. So the question we hope criminals will ask is if our house is really worth the effort to gain entry...and we hope they say no.

Toward John Lovell's point about good habits and always locking your doors even during the day: this is so so so important, even for night invasions. I personally experienced a home invasion when I was in my teens. We lived out in the middle of nowhere, and we only locked our doors at night. Every night before bed, we'd lock the doors, even though we felt pretty safe way out in the country. Unfortunately, on the night it mattered the most, the deadbolt on the side door somehow didn't get locked, and a man that lived down the road was able to bust the door open and get inside around 2am. He was drunk, stripped his pants off at the door, and came through the kitchen straight for my and my sister's bedrooms. We had no security system. He didn't have to kick the door down, so he was able to be extremely quiet. There is no telling what would have happened if my dad hadn't just happened to be awake, just happened to look up to see him sneaking through the kitchen, and just happened to have a firearm nearby. We got insanely lucky. It took the police 45 minutes to get to our home, and my dad held the neighbor at gun point until they arrived. Point is: if we had been in the habit of locking our doors constantly, that door would have been locked and this situation would never have escalated to the point that it did. My sister was 8 when she woke up to a drunk, pantsless man being held at gunpoint in her bedroom. She's 21 now and still has nightmares about this. No one was hurt, but only because we were insanely lucky. Please please please take all of this advice. Develop good habits, get a home security system, build fail-safes, and protect your home. I can tell you firsthand that it's better to be over the top about security than to regret not having enough.

I was a locksmith for a few years. Lock your doors during the day. Nothing crazy about that. It's smart. Most home invasions are at 3 in the afternoon. Besides, if the deadbolt is thrown, you know that the door was closed all the way. It is possible to be too paranoid. Locking the doors when you're at home is not that. Anyone that calls someone crazy for doing that is a bit too trusting for me to give them any credit for good sense.

Note : window bars should be on the inside. If they can be installed from the outside, they can be removed from the outside. Install them inside, and you "have to" get inside to remove them. They will likely break the glass, but that makes noise, and now they have to work around broken glass to try to open the bars. I use hinged cages on the inside, so I can open the cage, and window, but I can "shutter" it from the inside, and intruders will have a hard time entering at those points. You can also replace your door jam, with a piece of 1/2" aluminum resilient Chanel. Much harder to "kick off". Paint it to look like original jam.

When I was a kid, the neighborhood we lived in had several break-ins. My dad had us spend several days installing heavy-duty storm doors (hurricane glass) with external key locks and planting holly bushes under the windows as part of our "security upgrades." We didn't have cameras or security systems for the average Joe's wallet back then, so we hung bells on the doors and windows. The funniest thing was, we had a chow/ lab mix named Pepper that never barked, so my dad finally bought my mom the little dig she wanted. When it started yipping, Pepper works bark. Pepper was such a pushover, he'd probably help you load up the house for a couple of pats on the head, but that bayo was frightening.

My mother bought us one of those fake "hide a key" rocks for the front porch. It SCREAMS look, open here. I didn't want to be rude to my mother, so I placed it out there to "display". We live in a 110k populous city. As a test, I placed an old house key I had inside it, just to see if anything might happen. I would check this old, unusable key from time to time almost every weekend. Nothing. Then out if the blue, about the time I was only checking once a month, the key changed. It had been removed & flipped around in this fake rock. Not the way I had it particularly sitting in there. Now, in a sealed bag, there is a spent .45 case & a small note, quoted from a NonPoint song. "I got a bullet with your name on it, bullet with a name..." 👍

You forgot to mention lock quality. I can pick through most deadbolts in 30 seconds or less. A quality lock that is well known to be hard to pick (better machined) will detour the thief that is trying to be quiet and not alert your neighbors. Whenever I buy a lock I consult a locksmith and pick it myself.

@cannonball666
@cannonball666 5 жыл бұрын
@Rafael Ravelo They make hinges that cannot slide past each other if the pin is removed. This is accomplished by having a metal stud on one side that recesses into the hinge plate on the opposite side when the door is closed. This can actually be done yourself by installing another screw on the hinge that sticks up and then a hole on the opposite hinge plate to clear the new screw head. Plenty of vids that show how.

To the 2th fellow. Yes, you need to simplify your plan and not stage 10 weapons around the house. Work out a plan and also train it, sometimes with family-members to get to a safe-spot. Integrate this with a bugout-plan and bags. Firearm? A shotgun is very good for close combat/assaults. Thats why SWAT-team etc use them for raiding. You could shot at moving targets (even dogs) that you would miss with a handgun, or machinegun in all the haste. Also, implement a quick "suit up" with some body protection, and a helmet (could be biking clothes). Pepperspray.

Great video, thanks for publishing. In my opinion a well trained dog of the right size/breed is the best first line of defense you will ever have under two conditions: the perimeter is completely enclosed or the dog lives inside the dwelling. The dog is not only a deterrent but will also buy you additional time to react. If the dog is used to guard a perimeter, I highly advise in poison proof training. One other note. If you come home and the dog doesn't greet you, treat entry as if a threat already exist.

Good video! It made me think about my home surroundings. I have landscaping all around the perimeter of the house that is bordered with those decorative bricks. Any one of those could be used to smash a window. What you guys brought to the surface for me is that as long as those bricks are connected with one another, properly buried, plumb and level and maintained in a clean and neat fashion they will not present themselves as a weapon of convenience for a bad guy/gal. However, when they are left to settle and separate they become an obvious tool for the intruder to use to gain entrance and/or bust your head. I'm sure that some home invasions are not planned in advance, they just appear as an easy target to the person just cruising around looking for a score. Many times they are under the influence of only God knows what, and they can only focus on what's in front of them. Sorry for the book; just wanted to say thanks!

I outfitted my shop/shtf shelter with plexiglass windows that can withstand sustained small caliber fire, and I took a lot of time to pack the walls with sandbags internally. Doors are steel and have steel frames with grade 8 hardware securing it to the structure. You could literally unload on this thing with 7.62x39 and my family wouldn't be in danger. Additionally I used foam egg carton sheets for sound deadening and there's a well tapped in the corner for nearly unlimited water. Get on my level. My friends think I'm insane, but I guarantee they'll be knocking on my door when something goes down.

The giant ass boxer and 2 pitbulls don't hurt either. I fully trust my life, and my family's lives to those animals. They're as sweet as can be to the kids and people I designate, but a stranger is gonna have a bad fucking day if they get in. Scariest looking dogs you've ever seen, but they're LOYAL. They love the kids and they are as tender as can be until something bad happens, then they're literally your worst nightmare. Dogs are truly one of your best defense tools.

ESPECIALLY the part about leaving guns laying around. This day and age with all the quick access safes out there to choose from, there is NO excuse to leave shit unsecured. 95% of the illegal shootings in my area were with a stolen gun. Stop arming criminals. That includes your car too. Final tip, if you have them in your home, make sure to take full advantage of those fatal funnels and train accordingly.
