Update: Enda Kenny has since stepped down and Leo Varadkar is now leader of Fine Gael and Taoiseach. Thanks to Jimín and Cathal for helping with the script. Also, I'm guessing there will be a lot of poor pronunciations. 2 I've picked up on is "Michael" instead of "Micheal" and the occasional Fine "GARL"

I really like this series. I may not be voting in Ireland any time soon, but it makes me feel like an informed global citizen while at the same time keeping me entertained. Really appreciate the time that goes into these longer-form videos.

This is a very good video. Like a lot of people I find politics boring but know the importance of it. I will have to watch this video a few times to fully grasp everything and normally that would be a chore. However, this video is done very well. It's to the point without being boring. I am from Ireland but live in UK! I really want to live back in Ireland one day as a politician!

I'm an American and I don't see how this political system is very complex/hard to understand. Yes, it sounds more complex than the American political system, but it isn't actually. Also the Irish political system seems way more representative and in touch with the people than the American system.

It doesn't inspire confidence when in the first few seconds it's apparent that you cannot even pronounce the names of the Houses of the Irish government.

How does someone not know how to pronounce “Gael”? Also Sinn Féin is related to the original Sinn Féin, it's a reformed version of it. Many people believed that the modern split offs of Sinn Féin (Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael) forgot the original values of the party so they brought it back

Jabzy, great video! Though I have some constructive criticism. I think when you talk "politics", it must stray away from representative politics to reach out a broader definition. I was hoping you would go in more detail on the IRA and the conollians of Ireland; as I think you made the same "mistake" in the last video, on Peru, when you mentioned the Sendero Luminoso and Gonzalo only briefly.

I know this will be controversial but I believe those who identify as Nationalist in Northern Ireland should be able to vote in Ireland election lower house but not the president, but any laws pass, won't impact Northern Ireland.

I’ve often wondered howSinn Fein is considered a left/liberal party when their position on several key issues is invariably right-Wing. Not too dissimilar to the AfD here in Germany in point of fact.

Interesting effect on subject matter when compressed: actually some clarity emerges. The presentation seems even handed, although some might disagree. When standing back, the view appears to support centrist approaches. The nearer to center a party achieves, the better they do in the polls. But the instinct has been to pull right or left. All parties can claim originality, all can say they resolve issues. But the ones going for inclusivity usually win the day. It is easier to tear down an opponents reputation than it is to build your own on merit. The Republic deserves a better life, just like the rest of the world. Maybe the elected officials could watch this (over the protestations of all) and benefit from building consensus. Not as much bombast as the past approaches, but more effective.

All major Irish parents were founded or worked with IRA members not just Sinn Fein. Sinn Fein is just the one we remember because they worked with the IRA most recently.

This is a pretty good summary of Irish politics. Apart from some pronunciations it's spot on. Also it's worth emphasising that current Sinn fein have nothing to do with the original sinn fein.

Ireland, before E.U subsidies was the poorest country in Western Europe. My parent's who grew up in the 60's and 70's in rural west of Ireland, literally had nothing by Western standards. Now, I live in a prosperous, modern and free nation thanks to the E.U.
