The Australian's Greg Sheridan says "loads and loads” of people under 30 and 25 voted for the political arm of the IRA because the Irish “suffered from the most terrible ideological education where they’re not taught any history”.
Sinn Féin won 37 seats in the recent Republic of Ireland election and won the popular vote by over two per cent, up by more than 10 per cent from the 2016 election.
Mr Sheridan said “nobody over 65 voted for Sinn Féin,” and those who did voted for “people who have never repudiated the most sickening violence”.
He told Sky News hosts Alan Jones and Peta Credlin “modern Ireland should be ashamed of this”.

The so called “Irish Bloke” should read into Ireland’s history further, Even in the time of Ireland’s 1916 independence the British Army carried out the same atrocities he accuses the IRA of in the troubles. Kidnappings of wives who were thought to be informants for the IRA and so on, which happened on both sides. Personally I don’t see a difference in either uprisings, both had freedom fighters who fought against British rule.

Australia is thousands of miles away from the old world. Its really a case of people who have no idea of what they are talking about wading in with majisterial ignorance. The conflict that raged, between 1969 and 1998, in the north east corner of Ireland, was highly complex and nuanced. It involved national and international actors. It also had traces of the cold war involved, as well as trans national operations carried out by intelligence agencies of different countries. Now Australia has only aborigines to deal with, so its not suprising that complex issues are seen in black and white terms.I will just try to give some balance that maybe could help enlighten those who live in Australia. It might be relevant for those who are interested to do some research about this period in history. They should start with the following if they want to learn. So lets begin with The falls road curfew,Internment with out trial (you now have it in Australia and look how outraged you are) The hooded men,Ballymurphy massacre,Bloody Sunday,The Loyalist assassination campaign from 1972 to 1976,The Shankill Butchers,The UWC strike,The Dublin Monaghan Bombs,The Glenanne Gang,The hunger strikes,The 1982 RUC Death Squads,The rearming of the Loyalist groups in the mid 1980s,The Collusion of MI5 with Loyalist groups,The targeting of Sinn Fein councillors from the mid 80s to early 90s.This was all watched over and organised by British military intelligence. It would be good if the people on this station would at least speak with some understanding, before they expose their ignorance to a wider audience. And the above does not even begin to cover the internal working of what went on inside the British government. The plotting and planning that went on within the government of Harold Wilson has never really been examined. I know its hard for Australians as they do not have their own head of state (hello 2021),and they do have a cultural cringe towards Britain. That does not excuse such a lack of intellectual scrutiny.

Paul Quinn was beaten to death by a 12-strong IRA gang with iron bars and nail-studded cudgels in a border barn. His mother Breege said last night: "I'm calling on Conor Murphy to withdraw his disgraceful slur against Paul. My son was not a criminal. The Irish Government, the SDLP, and everybody who knew him testified to that. We also want Conor to go to the police and tell them who he spoke to in the IRA about Paul's murder.parents of IRA murder victim Paul Quinn have called on another Sinn Fein minister to withdraw his "disgraceful slur" against their son. After the 2007 killing, Conor Murphy said he had spoken to the IRA and was satisfied it wasn't involved. He linked the killing to a feud among criminals. Both the Quinns and the McCartneys urged the DUP to back their calls. They said the party had in recent times actively supported their campaigns for justice and they now expected it to exert pressure on Sinn Fein. Robert McCartney's sister Catherine said: "Robert's murder is not a historic case where the people involved are dead and it's hard to obtain information. "Except for Jock Davison, everybody central to events that night is alive. Deirdre Hargey needs to voluntarily go to police and make and sign a statement." The Communities Minister has previously said she was never asked to make a statement to detectives. Ms McCartney said: "She shouldn't need to be asked. She should just automatically go herself. As a political representative, and especially now as Communities Minister, she should be bending over backwards to help victims' families. We expect Sinn Fein to treat us the same way as they would treat victims killed by loyalists or the state. Robert was a member of Deirdre's local community who went for a drink in a bar and was murdered. We want to sit down with Deirdre and ask her what exactly she saw and didn't see that night in Magennis' - where she sat, if she saw Robert, if she saw Jock Davison.

Every party has its past, some of which is shameful and should be left in the past. Sinn Fein in modern society represents and demands equality, rights for all and Irish unity hence its largely youthful votes. The party today has no affiliations with the IRA and it’s leadership has openly condemned any acts of violence from so called ‘dissident republicans’ so this attack on Sinn Fein from this so called news network is appalling and inaccurate in today’s society. Irish people know what they are voting for.

Days before the general election, the PSNI found a viable bomb attached by magnets to a refrigerated trailer parked in the Silverwood industrial estate in Lurgan, Co Armagh. The bomb had been placed there some days earlier by the Continuity IRA in the expectation that the trailer would be loaded on to a ferry bound for Scotland. The PSNI believed the aim was to blow up the ferry on January 31st, Brexit day. The Continuity IRA denied this and said the bomb was intended to be smuggled to Britain: “It was timed for Britain’s exit from the EU and to bring attention to the sea border. Either way, the device could have killed any number of entirely innocent. people.

To most people in ireland, sinn Fein has evolved from being a political wing for the IRA into an actual party now. The reason why everyone voted for sinn fein was purely from a policy view point. With major housing shortages and overcrowded hospitals, the traditional centre right parties such as Fine Gael and Fine Fail showed a consistent failure and unwillingness to intervene in the private health and housing sector for the good of the country. People voted sinn fein not because of its IRA past but simply because it vowed to act whereas the government had failed to

I don't vote SF for various reason, IRA commemoration for one but at same time people voted for change. Have they not heard of the GFA? I accept SF have a mandate and have embraced solely political means to achieve unity. This is shameful broadcasting, painting with broad strokes. Ireland understands full well what IT suffered through. Younger generations are looking forward not back. History is taught fairly well here, not to repeat the mistakes of past. Therefore FF FG have had their time. This version of Sinn Féin have never been in govt in Dublin so it's not history repeating. What is this bs with TS Eliot too? Easter 1916 rebellion saw the martyrs blood of that era "water the rose tree" of Irish freedom. Here in Belfast, in the following generation, the 1940's we witnessed the sacrifice and valour of another great Irish patriot, martyr, Tom Williams, who was hanged at Crumlin Road prison, 2nd September, 1942. From that day to this his remains lie in the prison grave, although a fitting grave is available to the patriot at Milltown cemetery.. In anticipation of his remains being released. In this video we look at the life, times, and death of this noble Irishman. Joe cahill, no stranger to the freedom loving people of Ireland relates the story of the incident that brought about Tom's death, to Martin Newham, a patriot of the current generation.
