Irene Yee is a photographer based in Las Vegas, Nevada. Growing up with a passion for rock climbing and photography, she began taking bold, vibrant photos of her friends’ adventures to showcase the diversity of women addicted to the sport.
We caught up with Irene to chat about Las Vegas’ natural beauty, putting the world in perspective through a lens, and being comfortable with discomfort.

look for 'Petzl adjust'--they make a couple options; I didn't look closely enough at Irene's set-up to be sure which one she was using

iWth all due respect, because looking at her instagram she really is a good photographer, but telling somebody how to smile, pose and move on a rock for sake of the pictures is a staged photoshoot and using climbing as a subject, instead of documenting somebody climbing. Can´t imagine Jimmy Chin telling Alex Honnold to open his body when he's moving to the ankers. But nice pictures tho..

I feel like you may be surprised. Firstly, as soon as there is a photographer or videographer present, the subject already has a sense to perform for the camera - whether they perform unlike their usual habits or not, the presence of a photographer is acknowledged. Secondly, many photographers will photograph a climb after the athlete has finished the objective - this is usually because the angle requires the photographer to be in the climber's way if they were to redpoint - not to mention there would be added pressure to perform well during a redpoint burn if there was a photographer snapping photos. Documentary is a hard genre because many people realize the double edge of verisimilitude and documenting objective reality is at once jeopardized as soon as a photographer points their camera and gives the subject a narrative.

yeah, quality photos are awesome and can motivate people into rock climbing but seeing this video kinda ruins the magic. From now on, every time I see a climbing photo I'll imagine Irene hanging nearby with camera and telling climber to expose emotions and open up body just a lil' bit more. OTOH photographer's work needs recognition as well, right? People might come into climbing for looks and then stay for the sake of climbing

I think you'd be surprised how much of climbing imagery is staged. Of course, there's a lot that is pure documentary, but both have their place. I'm sure she documents her fair share as well as staging her own shoots. Sometimes fiction is better for telling a true story than the truth itself, as every visual storyteller will testify (including Steve McCurry). Great photos, great message.

outdoor photographers are not (necessarily) photojournalists! cragging and bouldering this stuff doesn't bother me, but the Nat Geo-style expeditionary "photo journalism" where the new route team is photographed from above...that's just BS. sure, they're avoiding a never-ending series of butt shots, butt....
