I always come back to this scene as probably the single most successful example of how to make your villain look really, REALLY powerful. It's not the fireworks or the fact that yes, he's just blasting people apart. It's the fact that he's just doing it so casually and fast, like it's nothing.

"This is an unsanctioned use of magical energy! All involved will be held! This disturbance is over!" Goddamn the way that line was delivered is as godly as Irenicus

"No, You will warrant no villains exposition from me." Says it in such an awesome way.

Jon Irenicus is godly, his voice actor is superb and his lines are excellent. "Ahh the child of Bhaal has awoken... It is time for more... experiments" BG2, one of the greatest games of all time.

NWN initially lacked the quality of Baldurs Gate but in it's expansions especially Hordes of the underdark they addressed this issue and made the characters more interesting :)

From the low tier adventure of Baldurs Gate 1 and then you suddenly bear witness to a mage with power well beyond anything you dared to imagine. This is how you demonstrate the raw power of a high level mage. He could have used that same power to terminate your entire group in an instant only for the fact he needed you. He knew he needed to unlock your power but he was still having to think of how to do that.

I can't think of anyone better than David Warner to voice for Irenicus. He gives him that extra boost of evil to him.

Irenicus' brilliance and hatred is so far beyond the Cowled Wizards pathetically limited scope of perception it's not even funny. He's simply a magnificent beast of a villain, empowered by his calculating genius and fueled by a hollow hatred and unquenchable vengeance against the Seldarine and all who betrayed him.

Best of Irenicus' lines: Shadow Thief: No! Don't do this! I DON'T WANNA DIE!!! Irenicus: Silence, dog. You have no purpose but to die by my hand. That sums him up right there. He's totally evil, but in that awesome kind of way. He callously kills anyone he wants to without a second thought. And his voice couldn't be done better. I love the dream sequences! He is like a perverted college professor!

this game has a sense of freedom that games have not came close too.

The conflict is not so much that he is meant to have any redeeming quality. It's more that he has been overly punished for something long ago. The elves want him to be the bigger man and change despite the horrible things they have done to him. Perhaps Irenicus could have changed his ways. But instead, the elves and the Seldarine took everything from him so he is completely consumed in his thirst for revenge. His tragedy is that he behaves just as any man might. No one wants to die.

i remember when my brother and i would give major xp to our characters by importing them into a saved game right before the dungeon exit to get the xp after the battle. and since you can't skip through this you have to listen to it over and over. after a day of doing this, we had memorized the entire thing.

This is just an introduction to a brilliant adventure ahead of you. The whole game was like reading a novel. I havent seen such a game like this except DOS. And they are doing bg3 now.

Irenicus is an acclaimed villain. He's a very interesting character, mysterious and sadistic figure, and really annoying because of his arrogance. But he surprised me a lot, at the first time, I couldn't believe he was an elf. the whole story about him was moving and well-done and very interesting. great villain this Joneleth.

Epic voice, epic character.

The engine at the time had an annoying limitation. There was no way to attach custom scripts to specific characters. To get around this the developers had to attach the script to an item. The item was then locked to the character. It was the same with Boo in Misc's inventory and Edwin's amulet. The items were locked to the characters to ensure that only that character would have the special scripted behavior and effects. I can't recall Imoen's belt, but assume it was the same.

This however is the best part of all BG II...The Beholder dialog. I DIED laughin. Hmmm,well he screamed "My Chest" as i would recall. A spear was being thrust trough his own chest at the same time,so he could have been refering to that. I assumed he was talking about "This Chest"though. So that means im afraid i cannot let you open it

It was only several years after playing Baldur's Gate 2 that I looked up the voice actors. David Warner looked familiar, and then I realized he played Bob Crachit in the version of A Christmas Carol my family watched almost every year. Outstanding range and quality in this actor. Rest in peace good sir.

God I love Baulders gate. Irenius had a real intellectual superiority that all evil villans possess except he was more fleshed out as a character, which made it more believable. Now I think of it, no other game has dialogue quite so good as the BG series. Massively underated game, which is probaly a good thing as overly commercialised games are generally shit.

Imoen probably SOOOO regretted that wee Magic Missile :)

First time I saw this as a child I was like... nope, no way I'm going to fight this Wizard of godlike power

The pain will only be passing you should survive the process. Do you even realise your potential? Agreed, one of the greatest games of all time, complemented by the superb voice acting. Jon Irenicus' voice acting was so bad ass.

Irenicus is one of the best villains in any game *ever*.

I usually went with Monk, or full Mage/Sorceror. With Monk, had to love the fast movement speed, the near immunity to magic, immunity to disease/poison, the high damage output, insta kill Quivering Palms, etc. Mage/Clerics were pretty useful to with a Spell Trigger with Lower Resistance, Lower Resistance, Greater Malison, and a Spell Sequencer with Doom, Doom, Chromatic Orb. The combination of those two spells let you kill practically ANYTHING in 2 insta casts.

Guys guys, let's give some credit to the amazing voice actor David Warner. Royal Court Theater, Batman, FALLOUT and this. Magical!

It's also a little hint from the game: It's the only spell that did any damage what so ever to Irenicus.

Ahhh, Irenicus. Much strife that man put my poor, poor character through. But I still luff him anyways. Awesome villain, awesome game. I'll still be playing this game when I'm a grandmother, I'm sure.

Agree. I have played BG2 about 30 times over the past decade. I just played DAO and I thought it was great. Not as good tactically but the story is very entrancing.

When playing this I never figured out what was up with Imoens belt..... I never understood it's purpose or what it did; by the time you find Imoen again later in the game she no longer has the belt. Though apparently it prevents her from dying in Irenicius dungeon according to what I've heard and is really to protect the story line. Still didn't think they'd need an item to achieve that... Oh well whatever the truth of the matter it would make sense :)

The idea would be that some special script needed to be attached to Imoen during the intro, but that it then wouldn't have been needed later on. Hence, no belt in the later portion of the game.

Yeah, those spells are unique. But one similar spell for that explosion are "Melf's Magic Metroids" hehe

@Mrsubzor I think he slaughtered like 500 when he took over their prison fortress. Or maybe the rest simply ran off in fear.

He's a pain in the ass on the final battle. He summons 2 pit fiends AND becomes the Slayer yet it doesn't hurt him while he remains in that form!
